Furli is likely named after Fuli the Remembrance.
The Chinese character 佛 has several pronunciations with different meanings.
- When pronounced fú, it is a variation of the obsolete character 彿 meaning "resemebling; as if." In this context, 佛狸 fúlí shares the same pronuncation with Fuli (Chinese: 浮黎 Fúlí).
- When pronounced fó, it means buddha. Furli's Japanese name ブッダヌ Buddanu is a combination of buddha and tanuki.
- When pronunced bì, it is only used in the Xianbei name Büri (Chinese: 佛狸 Bìlí) of Emperor Taiwu of Northern Wei, the third emperor of China's Northern Wei dynasty.
  - In Adventure Mission Belle of Astropolis, Furli's actor role Gigafurb (Chinese: 太武狸) is a reference to Emperor Taiwu.
