Geocles is a Mountain Dweller and the former leader of the Mountain Dwellers' Dromas Legion. He considers Terravox his most trusted companion.

History

Eternal Recurrence 33,550,336

In ancient times, the Mountain Dwellers lived in peaceful seclusion. However, one day, Geocles spotted a Ladonese battalion stationed at the foot of the Mountain Dwellers' mountain. The Ladonians intended to plant explosives all around the mountain, then lure their enemies, the Campanians, into their trap. This placed the Mountain Dwellers' homes in danger, but even so, the Mountain Dwellers feared change and sought to negotiate peace instead of leaving their mountain. In order to force the Mountain Dwellers to leave, Geocles took their store of gemstones and used it to trade with the Ladonians for a massive amount of gunpowder. He then set the forest around the Mountain Dwellers' settlement on fire, forcing them to evacuate without actually killing them. This incident is what earned him the title of 'Mountainbreaker'.^[1]

Eternal Recurrence 33,550,337

Presumably, Geocles also incited the Mountain Dwellers to evacuate in recurrence 33,550,337 since he is still addressed as the Mountainbreaker.

After leaving the Campa Mountains, internal divisions quickly appeared among the Mountain Dwellers. Some abandoned warfare and ended up enslaved by Castrum Kremnos or Cerydra. Others rallied under Geocles, forming an army which joined the Chrysos War in Light Calendar 3798. The army was lured into a trap by Oleinus, however, and ended up imprisoned. In the dungeons, the Mountain Dwellers encountered dromases, and since both were creations of Georios, they were able to communicate and coordinate a prison break. Motivated by their capture, Geocles devoted himself to studying warfare strategy and trained his army, forming an elite cavalry of dromas riders. This Dromas Legion became feared throughout Amphoreus, and they declared themselves the protectors of Earth's creatures.^[2]

In Light Calendar 3865, Aquila experienced unstable weather, causing droughts and floods which led to crop failure. The nations of Amphoreus turned to slaughtering Earth's creations for food, hunting several species to extinction. Witnessing these cruelties during his raids, Geocles gradually became cold, violent, and vengeful towards other races.^[2]

In the Month of Everday in Light Calendar 3868, Geocles first encountered Terravox in the Dolos Plains. Terravox, a massive dromas, was carrying many small creatures on his back, surrounded by the armies of various city-states who were trying to kill the creatures in his care with arrows. Seeing this, Geocles ordered the Dromas Legion to charge, freeing Terravox from encirclement. He then led the Dromas Legion in pursuit of Terravox's attackers. Terravox commanded the army to stop, citing that the Mountain Dwellers were historically against war. After a brief clash between Geocles and Terravox, Terravox became the new leader of the Dromas Legion and rekindled the Mountain Dwellers' ancestral sense of kindness. Geocles was wary at first, but seeing Terravox's discipline and the efficacy of the Dromas Legion, he grew to trust Terravox and the two became close companions.^[2]

In Light Calendar 3957, Cerydra's Flame-Chase Alliance entered warfare with the Dromas Legion. The Flame-Chase Alliance sought Georios's Coreflame, but the Dromas Legion was fiercely loyal to Georios. However, Terravox betrayed the legion, fighting on the side of the Flame-Chase and decimating the Dromas Legion.^[3] Betrayed by his most trusted companion, Geocles refused to surrender, instead falling into the chasm where Georios rested.^[2]

Geocles: Even in the tolerant academic atmosphere of the Grove of Epiphany, people were surprised that the visiting scholar was a dromas rather than a Mountain Dweller... It took quite some effort to explain that one.

Geocles: But none of that matters, old friend. Tell me, what else can I do for you?

Terravox: You've done more than enough, my old friend. I'm just here to use the scholar's projection device to gaze upon the starry skies of days past.

Geocles: As children of Earth, must we gaze up at the stars?

Terravox: Heh, it's precisely because we're children of Earth that we must gaze up at the stars.

Terravox: A scholar once said that the starry sky isn't just a collection of lights up above, but rather, endless distant stretches of "earth."

Terravox: My old friend, can you imagine? There's mountains and plains there too, with countless creatures running free.

Geocles: No, I'm not as tall as you. I can't see that far.

Geocles: Just watching the tension building between the Mountain Dwellers and Okhema leaves me no room to think of anything else.

Terravox: ...My apologies.

Geocles: That's not what I meant...

Geocles: Never mind, I'm just being overly anxious. You're free to look up at the stars. Things aren't that bad yet.

Terravox: Old friend, you've been watching that approaching destiny before us, and that's exactly why we've made it this far together...

Terravox: Let me invite you to gaze at the stars together. Therein lies our future destiny, the compass of all we may achieve.

Geocles: The future destiny? In such a destiny, will you and I still exist?

Terravox: ...I'm afraid by then, neither you nor I will exist anymore.

Terravox: But destiny isn't just a single moment. Our destiny will be passed on to the descendants of Georios, and theirs into the hands of a future even farther away. That's how destiny manifests itself.

Terravox: When that time comes, those who inherit our destiny, be they descendants of Georios or Kephale, or visitors from beyond the sky, our fate shall follow their path.

Geocles: Beyond the sky? Then... what about the "Earth" that Georios bestowed upon us?

Terravox: Earth was never just a piece of land somewhere. Wherever life dwells, there is Earth — Earth exists wherever we choose to stand.

Terravox: We've been chatting for far too long... Let's go, the scholar's been waiting for us already.

Geocles: Today, I'll try looking up at the starry sky too.
