"Spirithief" Bartholos is an NPC on Amphoreus, located in "Eternal Holy City" Okhema.

They initially appear in the Trailblazer's room in the Hall of Respite after completing all Spirithief challenges. After talking to the player, reloading the area will change their location to the rooftops of Marmoreal Market.

They will also appear in "Dragonbone City" Styxia during the Achievement challenge Chirping Secret: Lost Prayers, and upon completion act as the connection to the hidden room inside the Temple of Ages.

Profile

"Spirithief" Bartholos is initially shown to be a Titankin of Zagreus. They are the twin sprites roaming the wilds and alleys of Amphoreus, taking pleasure in stealing valuables and playing tricks on travelers. They often outpace Treasure Hunters at the last moment, leaving only a coin as a harmless joke.[6]

During the events of Trailblaze Mission Chest, Bear the Bygone Dust, it is discovered that Bartholos is truly the Titan Zagreus, who was spared by Cipher during her trial for the Trickery Coreflame.

History

The Trailblazer periodically encounters Bartholos while attempting to claim various treasures found across Amphoreus. Doing so causes Bartholos to appear and steal it before running away, but the Trailblazer can make use of Oronyx's powers to revert time and drag them back, which they claims causes dizziness. Bartholos either gives up the treasure after a short conversation or fights back before surrendering the treasure.[7]

When Aglaea was investigating "filth" that had infiltrated Okhema, she found Bartholos lurking in one of them. Bartholos claimed that they were eliminating threats to the city-state, and she proceeded to ask them where Cipher was. They stated that they did not know, due to Cipher and them being rivals. She then realized that they were hiding something and demanded that they return it, prompting them to run away. She proceeded to use Oronoyx's powers to drag them back and they gave up the treasures, claiming that they would die of starvation. Aglaea told them that they didn't need to eat at all, causing Bartholos to become enraged and leave, claiming to never want to see her again even if they had all the gold in the world.[8]

Upon completing all Spirithief challenges, Bartholos appears in the Trailblazer's room and greets them. After some idle banter and reloading the area, Bartholos will be found in Marmoreal Market.

During the elimination rounds of the Seal Slammers tournament, Bartholos steals Dorian's Silver Chalice Badge and attempts to take his place in the rankings, although the Trailblazer intervenes and recovers the badge from them. Despite the theft, Dorian allows Bartholos to participate in his stead, who then battles the Trailblazer with their own Dark Seal. Bartholos is ultimately bested by the Trailblazer, knocking them out of the tournament.[9] Bartholos later joins forces with Cipher, who managed to steal the Gold Seal Cup trophy. After Cipher is defeated by the Trailblazer in a post-championship seal battle for ownership of the trophy, Bartholos tries to excuse Cipher's loss by claiming that there were numerous factors being stacked against her.[10]

Bartholos later accompanied Cipher to "Dragonbone City" Styxia in order to loot the treasures in the fallen city now that the barrier had been removed by the Trailblazer and Castorice. During the expedition, Cipher noted that Bartholos was acting strange. After they solved a Golden Scapegoat, Cipher realized that Aglaea had planted a golden nymph on them which she plucked out, telling them to remain silent for their sakes.[11] The trip yielded little treasure and they returned to Okhema, where Phainon entrusted Cipher with protecting Kephale's Coreflame. She did this by having Bartholos consume it before turning them into an envelope and giving it to Trinnon, telling her not to open it until dawn broke. Following her death at the hands of the Flame Reaver, Phainon rushed to Trinnon, where she released Bartholos. Bartholos later revealed to the two that they were actually Zagreus and that Cipher had died fulfilling her mission. Before giving the Coreflame, which they had stored in their stomach, to Phainon, Bartholos told him to remember that it was Zagreus that helped save the world before their body faded away.[12]

The Trailblazer continues to encounter Bartholos during their travels across Amphoreus, though they claim to be projections and fragments of the real entity.

Dialogue

Hall of Respite

(First interaction)
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Ooh, it's you.
Icon Dialogue Arrow It's me.
Icon Dialogue Arrow Ooh, it's you.
Icon Dialogue Arrow (Wave them away.)
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Crrrk... For us to be calmly greeting each other for the first time without poking at our backs with a compass, nor pulling at each other's tails, I'm suddenly not used to this.
Icon Dialogue Arrow What're you up to this time?
"Spirithief" Bartholos: All lines of work need ample rest. This is the right Talanton granted all creatures of the world.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: So, as you can see... I'm taking a break.
Icon Dialogue Arrow When have I ever pulled on your tail?
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Our ancestor Zagreus once said: "One person is an entire world, one person's pulling means everyone's pulling."
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Come to think of it, you're to blame for my idleness right now. You keep appearing at the most inopportune moments and interrupting my hot streak — I can't even get into the groove of things now.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: During this period, we should turn over a new leaf and find a proper job. Got any recommendations?
Icon Dialogue Arrow Become an anti-thief ambassador.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Teach them to store their valuables in their cellars, so I won't have to rummage through the whole house while I'm at it. Good idea.
Icon Dialogue Arrow Become a bath mascot.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Phagousa and I enjoyed great relations back in the day. At their banquet, my compliments had everyone roaring with laughter.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Crrrkk... They'd be blackout drunk every time, then I'd steal away a pearl from the crest of the wave. She never noticed, and even thought the wave was balding.
Icon Dialogue Arrow Be a transport worker, Old Bart.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: You still remember that? It's just moving things from one place to another. I bet I'd be great at it.

(Subsequent interactions)
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Clear skies, green grass, citizens out and about... Our ancestor Zagreus once said: "The slightest thought is a sin on an idle afternoon."
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Let's leave that matter aside for now and tell me what you wanted to talk about. I'll banter with you.
Icon Dialogue Talk Tell me your story...
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Haha, my tales of thievery are even longer than Mnestia's golden thread... I've stolen more things than Aquila has eyes.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: What do you wish to hear? The most harrowing heist, or my proudest feat?
Icon Dialogue Arrow The most harrowing heist.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: There was no more thrilling escapade than the time Thanatos sent me a raven with a message.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: "Bartholos, O Bartholos," it said, "you can steal everything beneath the sky, except for one thing: Georios' secret fruit, buried within the earth. How would you even be able to taste it?"
"Spirithief" Bartholos: So I turned into a Steelclaw Beast and dug into the earth for countless days, my journey ending with the fruit in my belly. Honestly, it didn't taste like much.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: So Thanatos said again: "Bartholos, O Bartholos, you can steal everything beneath the sky, except for one thing: Cerces' secret fruit, perched atop the Grove. How would you even be able to taste it?"
"Spirithief" Bartholos: So I turned into a bird and flew, resting my feet on ten branches, my journey ending at the treetop. Honestly, it didn't taste like much.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Hearing this, Thanatos laughed aloud: "Bartholos, O Bartholos, you have been fooled! I have summoned the currents from craggy crevices, and the clouds of roiling dark to drop these two fruits bearing the 'Core of Death'."
"Spirithief" Bartholos: "Now, the seeds of death grow within you. Your pranks will upend the lands, and your tricks will wither all life. And all this will be in my service."
"Spirithief" Bartholos: That was so frightening! I mustered my courage and replied...
"Spirithief" Bartholos: "Hah, who would eat the seeds of a fruit?"
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Whether you take it as truth or just a harmless tall tale, that's up to you.
Icon Dialogue Arrow Your proudest feat.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Crrkrrkk... material wealth is a most trite goal. There are many things to steal... Memories, wisdom, even status.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Neither keys nor crowbars are needed to steal them. Sometimes all it takes is a glib word, a heartfelt gesture, to have them swoon for your earnestness.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: I used just this method to steal an unimaginable secret... Which is also the reason why I'm standing here before you.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Whether you take it as truth or just a harmless tall tale, that's up to you.
Icon Dialogue Talk About your past...
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Gosh, you wouldn't be one of those types, would you? Obsessively digging into one's past, picking out its shattered fragments, and then presumptuously asserting that the other party has been healing their trauma for their whole life?
"Spirithief" Bartholos: If you're thinking of pretending to empathize with me, then pretentiously persuading me to turn over a new leaf, you can save it.
Icon Dialogue Arrow I have seen you in the past...
Icon Dialogue Arrow It's very different from your present self.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Crrkk, whose leg are you pulling? Me? Obsequious and earnestly polite? Curious and full of energy? Only unleashing harsh words in a fit of powerless rage after being bullied?
"Spirithief" Bartholos: S—Someone must be impersonating me! Or perhaps, it could be one of the steps in my plan back then... That must be it!
Icon Dialogue Arrow You sound agitated...
Icon Dialogue Arrow We're just chatting, don't get antsy.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Am I? Nonsense. I am more than happy to acquiesce if you wish to speak on other things. But if you keep persisting on this matter, don't blame me for what happens next!
Icon Dialogue Talk What else did Zagreus say?
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Ancestor Zagreus left many pearls of wisdom. Alas, people nowadays are selectively blind, only heeding Cerces' words — they can't even fathom that the paltry tricks of Cerces are all that remains after Zagreus stole everything else.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: What do you wish to hear?
Icon Dialogue Arrow Some adages from the soul?
"Spirithief" Bartholos: "Wisdom brings you farther from foolishness, but foolishness brings you closer to happiness."
"Spirithief" Bartholos: ...Ancestor Zagreus said this after successfully deceiving Cerces.
Icon Dialogue Arrow Some quotes about life?
"Spirithief" Bartholos: "Titans should not have little toes, and neither should humans."
"Spirithief" Bartholos: ...Ancestor Zagreus mentioned this after stubbing its toe while fleeing.
Icon Dialogue Arrow Got any sayings for life hacks?
"Spirithief" Bartholos: "Theft is but retrieving what belonged to you in the first place."
"Spirithief" Bartholos: ...That was ancestor Zagreus' first lesson.
Icon Dialogue Arrow Any worldly warnings?
"Spirithief" Bartholos: "Do not trust Okhemans, even if they only live in its outskirts."
"Spirithief" Bartholos: ...Ancestor Zagreus espoused these words when ensnared in a trap set by the Okheman Elders.
Icon Dialogue Return Not very interested.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: I shall respect your decision, but you're losing out!
Icon Dialogue Exit Nah, I've got better stuff to do.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: I shan't see you off then. I should be on my walk on this idle afternoon.

Temple of Ages

(After solving the Garmentmaker's puzzle in "Dragonbone City" Styxia)‍[verification needed]
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Hoho, are you going to enter "The Hidden Room Discovered by the Brilliant Bartholos"?
Icon Dialogue Arrow Yes, I'll enter.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: ...Eeny, meeny, miny, moe! Alright, I've pulled back the curtain for you. Go and take a look.
Icon Dialogue Talk How did you manage to find it?
"Spirithief" Bartholos: (Boy/Lass), don't underestimate the power of the Thief God —the divine thief of Trickery can even replace the money in your pocket with a shard of pottery in the blink of an eye, without you ever noticing!
"Spirithief" Bartholos: If one day the flame of Kephale is stolen, and the Council of Elders remains oblivious like a bunch of ostriches, I wouldn't be surprised at all.
Icon Dialogue Exit I won't enter.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Alright then. Go play somewhere else.

(Inside secret room)
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Yo yo, are you leaving "The Hidden Room Discovered by the Brilliant Bartholos"?
Icon Dialogue Arrow Yes. I'll leave.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Close sesame!
Icon Dialogue Talk What exactly is this place?
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Hehehe... I don't know. I'm "Spirithief" Bartholos, not "Detective" Bartholos.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: But if I had to guess, this might be a room from before the fall of Styxia, preserved by some means until now.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: I've never seen the beautiful Styxia. It was already in ruins by the time I was born.
Icon Dialogue Exit I won't leave.
"Spirithief" Bartholos: Alright then. Go play somewhere else.

Beyond Time: An Eternal Page

(First interaction, with Cipher and Bartholos)
Cipher: Grandma, look at these treasures in my hands. Silver rings from Aidonia, ceramics from Aenionus, and these fine silver hairpins... I picked them from the best tailor's shop in Okhema, they'll look beautiful on you.
Cipher: Take it! No more getting up at the crack of dawn to deal with those picky merchants at the market giving you grief!
Annas: Hey, doing business to make a living isn't about taking abuse, but come to think of it, with all these nice things, you're not...
Cipher: Uh... some kind folks heard about my great achievements and eagerly brought these over. I tried to refuse, but they kept insisting on stuffing them in my pockets.
Annas: Cifera, look into my eyes.
Cipher: Granny, you've gotta believe me! I even brought a witness. Bartholos, say something!
Bartholos: Uh... e—excuse me, grandma!
Bartholos: Heh, heh heh, B—Boss lady's speaking nothing but the truth!
Cipher: Hey, you promised so confidently just now, why are you suddenly tongue-tied? Gray Mystery, help me out here!
Icon Dialogue Arrow Cipher's speaking nothing but the truth.
Cipher: Granny, Gray Mystery is a real hero. (His/Her) words carry more weight than a hundred others combined.
Icon Dialogue Arrow Cipher is a legendary hero that everyone looks up to!
Cipher: Hmph, that's right. If it weren't for me, the Chrysos Heirs would've been crushed by the black tide long ago.
Annas: ...
Annas: Cifera, you clever little thing! Must've been through quite a lot to develop such a sharp tongue, huh?
Annas: Whether it's lies or truth, granny will believe anything Cifera says.
Cipher: Uh... hehe... Granny, I can't help but tell little white lies sometimes, so don't take everything I say at face value.
Cipher: But well... I can assure you, my heroic deeds are well-documented. Now, which story should I start with?
Icon Dialogue Arrow How about that showdown between the Dolos Rogues and Zagreus?
Icon Dialogue Arrow Shall we start with the Dawn Device's mind-blowing scam?
Annas: Hmm... hmm... Cifera, that job sounds pretty rough. You didn't get hurt, did you?
Cipher: Don't worry, granny. Those guys don't even have what it takes to touch the hem of my clothes~
Annas: Hehe... that's my granddaughter for you. Granny will heat up some camel milk, and you can tell me all about it while enjoying these flaky pastries.
Icon Dialogue Arrow Your wish is my command.
Icon Dialogue Arrow Hi, I'll have a bite!
Bartholos: Huh, there's... there's some for us too? Thank you, grandma!
Cipher: Heh heh...
Cipher: I have sooo~ many more exciting adventure stories to tell you, just let me share them with you slowly...

(Subsequent interactions, with Bartholos)
Icon Dialogue Talk Listen
Annas: If you ask me, those arrogant bigwigs definitely need to be taught a lesson. You don't know this, little grape, but back in my day...
Bartholos: Huh!? Grandma, you—
Annas: Heh heh heh...
Annas: As the old saying goes, Dolos has no room for slackers!
