A nameless swordsmaster who came with the black tide and hunts the Titans' Coreflames. The face beneath the mask is identical to Phainon's.
Having survived Eternal Recurrences and burned by trillions of Coreflames, he is little more than a bony charcoal, crumbling to ashes after passing his final wish to Phainon.

The Flame Reaver, real name Khaslana,[1] is a mission-exclusive NPC on Amphoreus and the primary antagonist of the Chrysos Heirs.

During Trailblaze Mission Hero, Ignite That Primal Sun, the Flame Reaver's true identity is revealed to be Phainon, who was recursively looping through the Eternal Recurrences of Amphoreus, passing on his memories since the original final cycle of the Amphoreus Experiment.

Profile

Initially thought to be a mindless swordsman with the sole goal of collecting the Titans' Coreflames, the Flame Reaver's original identity was Phainon from the original final cycle of the Amphoreus Experiment, whose memories were preserved and passed on through subsequent lifetimes of himself in each Eternal Recurrence until the present. Alongside Cyrene, before the recurrences began, they deduced that other Aeons could also gaze upon Amphoreus and that, as a result, there was a chance to protect their world and halt the birth of the Lord Ravager Irontomb with the assistance of those Aeons and outside intervention.[1]

As a promise to Cyrene, the Flame Reaver began the Eternal Recurrences, collecting Coreflames to facilitate the loop and prolong their efforts. To do this, he also was responsible for ending the life of Cyrene in each loop, including in Eternal Recurrence 33,550,336, during which the Astral Express arrived on Amphoreus.[1]

History

In the final cycle of the Amphoreus Experiment, Phainon and Cyrene, having learned of Lygus's plan to release the Lord Ravager Irontomb into the cosmos, decided to attract Fuli's gaze by erasing "Time" through Cyrene's death and imbuing her soul into a ceremonial blade. Taking the blade and adopting his true name, "Khaslana," Phainon initiated the continuous loop of Eternal Recurrences.[1]

Once the first Eternal Recurrence began, Khaslana did not awaken until Light Calendar Year 3870. Upon his arrival, he approached Hysilens, the Knight Commander of the Flame-Chase Army, and inquired about the whereabouts of Cerydra, the Imperator of Okhema, intending to assist her in the Flame-Chase. Wary of his intentions, Hysilens instead escorted him to the summit of Dawncloud to meet with Aglaea and Tribbie. There, Khaslana proved his goodwill by reciting Tribbie's demigod prophecy. As a result, he was granted an audience with Cerydra, who then employed his strength to achieve a flawless victory over the Titan of Earth, Georios. Due to him being the one to collect all the Coreflames throughout this recurrence, no other demigods were born after Tribios, and the world eventually came to its scheduled end. Before time was "reset," the Phainon of this recurrence confronted Khaslana for his apathy. It's unclear which one of them was defeated, with the survivor retrieving the memories of his other lifetime.[1]

In subsequent recurrences, Khaslana adopted a strategy similar to that of the first Eternal Recurrence. However, by the 42nd loop, his decision to "avoid sacrifices of past companions" began to show minor deviation. By the 134th Eternal Recurrence, this approach had fully converged with that of the 42nd recurrence, and his cognition deteriorated severely.[1]

By the four millionth Eternal Recurrence, he revealed to the Hero Within the plan he had begun executing several million recurrences beforehand: due to his body housing a total of forty-eight million Coreflames and gradually breaking down, he decided to begin entrusting the Eternal Recurrences to his subsequent lifetimes. By shattering his body, it would allow his future selves to retrieve the Coreflames and memories of their past lives, as well as continue the Eternal Recurrences indefinitely. He was confident they would continue along the same path, just as he had consistently done since committing to the plan in the beginning.[1] Cipher later refers to this as "dying and coming back, millions and millions of times,"[4] while the Hero Within describes it as the "Chaos of Rebirth."[5]

By the 33,550,336th Eternal Recurrence, Khaslana adopted the appearance of a masked swordsman and became known as the "Flame Reaver." He was identified as the one responsible for the murder of Cyrene and the destruction of Aedes Elysiae, leaving Phainon as its sole survivor.[6] As in previous loops, the Flame Reaver began attempting to kill the Chrysos Heirs and claim their Coreflames. He sought to acquire the Reason Coreflame from Anaxa at the Grove of Epiphany's Luminary Throne, but was confronted by the Trailblazer, Castorice, and Trianne, who engaged him in battle. When he proved too difficult to defeat, Trianne used the Century Gate with Castorice's assistance to expel him.[7]

Upon his arrival in Okhema following the fall of the Grove, Anaxa deduced the Flame Reaver's plan to steal the remaining Coreflames. As predicted, he traveled to Janusopolis, where he killed Oronyx and obtained the Coreflame of Time. He then ambushed Trianne, Tribbie, and Trinnon, during which Trianne once again attempted to expel him using a Century Gate. When he proved too powerful to contain, Trianne instead used the Century Gate to send Tribbie and Trinnon away while she faced the Flame Reaver alone.[8] After expending the last of her divine power, Trianne collapsed, causing him to lose interest in her. Shortly thereafter, Krateros arrived and confronted him, refusing to allow him to seize Trianne, who had transformed into a doll. The Flame Reaver questioned Krateros's motive for fighting, but indulged him nonetheless, easily defeating him.[9]

Aglaea and the others soon concocted a plan to lure the Flame Reaver to Castrum Kremnos, where they engaged him in battle once more. During the fight, Anaxa managed to recover the stolen Coreflame, but Mem's trap for the Flame Reaver ultimately failed. Eventually, the battle ended with the arrival of the newly ascended demigod of Strife, Mydei, who helped to defeat him using the Lance of Fury. However, the Flame Reaver survived the attack and managed to escape.[9]

Following Aglaea's death at the hands of the Cleaners, Phainon became concerned that the Flame Reaver would attempt to claim Kephale's Coreflame while he, the Trailblazer, and Hyacine confronted Aquila in the Sky Castrum, the Eye of Twilight. In preparation, he entrusted Cipher with relocating the Coreflame to a secure location. She accomplished this by having "Spirithief" Bartholos consume it, transforming him into an envelope for Trinnon to carry. Cipher then lured the Flame Reaver to Styxia. Initially uninterested in her, the Flame Reaver partially revealed his motive for collecting the Coreflames, at which point Cipher deceived him with a counterfeit, drawing him to the top of city. After misleading him and escaping for a second time, Cipher attempted to flee, only to discover that the coin granting her god-like speed had been stolen by the Flame Reaver. He subsequently caught up to her and fatally wounded her; however, before he could claim the Coreflame he believed she carried, Cipher revealed it to be a fake.[10]

With the Dawn Device now extinguished due to Cipher's death, the Flame Reaver then proceeded to Okhema to confront Phainon and the others. He claimed the world had to be "reset" now that "dawn was ordained," which confused Phainon due to that also being the overall goal of the Chrysos Heirs with the Era Nova. During his pursuit, the Flame Reaver was held back by Mydei, Tribbie, and Castorice, but they all quickly perished. He then intercepted Phainon's group at Marmoreal Palace, wherein Dan Heng used his Imbibitor Lunae form in order to hold him off. Surprised by his unfamiliar power, he questioned Dan Heng on his identity before battling him.[11]

The Flame Reaver was then eventually restrained by Screwllum, who momentarily projected into Amphoreus to assist Dan Heng and the Trailblazer. Quickly breaking free, he caught up with the Trailblazer and Phainon at the Vortex of Genesis, where he clashed against Phainon, revealing his true identity. Defeated by Phainon, he then continued the cycle of passing on his memories and the Coreflames he bore onto him, a duty that Phainon accepted, taking on the moniker of "Khaslana" as the Flame Reaver faded into dust.[5]

  • The Flame Reaver's unmasked appearance resembles Kevin Kaslana from Honkai Impact 3rd even more strongly than Phainon, having a nearly identical hairstyle to the former.
  • The Flame Reaver's unmasked appearance bears a striking resemblance to the petrified corpse of the Herrscher of Finality of the Previous Era in Honkai Impact 3rd, sharing several notable features with her:
    • Both have white, cracked, statuesque appearances.
    • Both are missing the left halves of their faces.
    • The inside of both of their bodies contains a dark bluish-purple galaxy pattern.
  • The crescent moon-shaped weapon the Flame Reaver wields is Cyrene's ceremonial blade.[1]

    • His routine logging entry being singular, him retaining the same ID throughout the recurrences,[2] and the second part of his character story mentioning this process of self-iteration also indicates that he stays a single entity, with the simulation allowing his lifetimes to interact with each other through data projection. His third character story also reveals that Phainon is literally having a monologue, providing both "requests" and "responses" across the loop.
    • In Trailblaze Mission Hero, Honor That Crimson Call, among the memories present in the Flame Reaver's mind that Lygus shows to the Trailblazer, the last memories are shown to be the ones Phainon was currently forging in the 33,550,336th Eternal Recurrence, further revealing he and Phainon were the same single entity. In the same scene, all the memories of his lifetimes as "Phainon" were shown to be present, including of early recurrences where he was the one to die.
    • Phainon's initial "Knowledge" voice-over indicates he had recurring dreams related to his experiences as "Khaslana,"[14] with the Sisyphus metaphor also present during Trailblaze Mission Hero, Ignite That Primal Sun. This notion of dreams and subconscious memories also makes an appearance in his fourth character story.
