Vesper is a commission-exclusive NPC who first appears during the Season 2 Interlude: Encore for an Old Dream.

Profile

Vesper is a V-DTX model Intelligent Construct: a machine designed by TOPS Entertainment to operate as a "perfect performer".^[2] Due to her inbuilt programming she has a deep love of the stage and performing, but holds resentment to her employer given their usage of her, and is often openly flippant about their schedule and practices, to the dismay of her staff. She is quite fond of the Angels of Delusion, and is close friends with Aria.

History

Vesper was originally designed by TOPS Entertainment to serve as a performer that could be adjusted to suit any of their needs, but after she proved her personhood by passing the Forbidden Fruit Test, they locked away her certification, preventing her from being recognised as a true individual.^[3] On paper she was considered property of TOPS, and subjected to inhuman treatment, including having her thought processes shut down and being forced in to perpetual performance and image-making. Despite this, she was still able to exercise her individuality at times, fostering a friendship with Aria, and resisting some of TOPS's scheduling and demands of her wherever she could.^[4]

As part of the Year Light Ceremony that was set shortly after Ye Shunguang was awarded the title of Void Hunter, Cecilia was originally set to make a return to the stage as "Lady Cersea" and perform, but turned down the offer, leading TOPS to push for Vesper to replace her. While she was preparing for her performance, the Angels of Delusion were preparing for their own debut, and invited Vesper to watch them at the 404 Livehouse. While she would be busy, she pushed her manager A-Tang to give her half a day to see the girls prepare.

Arriving to watch the Angels, she met Jane, who was investigating the cases of Construct citizens going inexplicably rogue, and while Vesper was none the wiser at the time, Jane was suspicious, causing Nangong to take Vesper backstage.^[5] After the performance she praised the girls, but Aria began to spiral due to her insecurities and Youkai's influence, eventually overtaking her and making her fight her own friends. She was eventually subdued, with both Nangong and Sunna working to bring her back to her senses, much to Vesper's relief. After making sure Aria was ok she headed back for her own rehearsal, but Youkai had already made the jump to infiltrate her software, and spoke to her that night, preying on her own insecurities and the abuses she had recieved at the hands of TOPS, and eventually pushing her far enough that he could influence her actions.^[6]

On the day of the Year Light Ceremony, Phaethon and the Angels discerned what Youkai had done, Aria went to confront her in Failume Heights, and the two interlocked in to a fight between their Logic Cores, with Fairy supporting Aria. Vesper was ultimately defeated and talked down by Aria, then revealing the extent of what she knew of Youkai's plan to Phaethon and Aria. Following this, both PubSec and Krampus arrived to handle the situation. Though Zhu Yuan was prepared to take in Vesper immediately, Zhao interjected due to Vesper being a TOPS employee. Vesper and her manager A-Tang were then taken by Krampus for questioning. While Youkai's plan did proceed, Vesper's information helped Phaethon to thwart his efforts on Gilded Carrot Day.
