Youkai

Youkai is a sophisticated AI and one of the four "keys" from outside New Eridu, together with Fairy, Jinni, and Ghost.^[6][7] It first appeared at the end of the episode 10 Mortal Form of Season 2 Chapter 6: To Be Fuel for the Night and is the major antagonist in Season 2 - Interlude: Encore for an Old Dream.
He is currently helping the head of High Ambitions Corp., "Lead Scepter".^[1]

Profile

Since it believes "the plan" cannot be stopped and it is only a question of time before it comes to completion, its only care in the meantime is having fun, which seems to consist in stirring chaos on a large scale in New Eridu:^[8] it has no qualms in killing people,^[9] and refers to its victims as "trophies," of which it collected so many it "can't even scroll through them all."^[10] It sees humanity as "a lowly species"^[11] and "low-end life forms."^[10] It thus looks down on Fairy for her amity towards citizens, deeming her pathetic^[11] and servile,^[10] and harbors open hostility towards her and the Phaethon siblings, her two masters.^[12]

History

Together with the other three "keys," Youkai was planted by two unknown individuals from outside New Eridu inside the Inter-Knot Deep Database, with the mission to wait for someone who can awaken them.^[7] Their two old masters are monitoring their activation status from outside New Eridu.^[6] It swayed Lockspring to become a follower of the Creator, and aided him into bringing the advent of the Creator's Messenger formed from Miasma, Sarah's body and Sunbringer's powers.^[8] After Lockspring's death, Youkai moved towards New Eridu,^[8] where it launched an attack on the city by hacking the Intelligent Construct citizens,^[10] turning them hostile in order to sow discord between them and humans;^[13] Youkai attacked Aria^[13] as a way to harm Fairy, who deeply cares for the Construct she once guided in battle,^[12] and then it emotionally "corrupted" Vesper into serving as a puppet for its plan.^[11] Youkai's schemes were foiled by Phaethon, and it got in touch with a new partner,^[11] the head of High Ambitions Corp., "Lead Scepter;" Youkai tampered with the voting system and made the former's vote in favour of TOPS' attack on Roscaelifer win against the other two Pacts' suggestions.^[1]

Etymology

• All four "keys" take their name from supernatural entities of different cultures: Youkai is named after the yōkai (Japanese: 妖怪) of Japanese culture.
