Avrelian

Avrelian (Russian: Аврелиан Avrelian),^[6] also known affectionately as Relya (Russian: Реля Relya), was the first person to take on the identity of Reed Miller. As the original Reed Miller, he was the founder of the Treasure Hoarders, defining them as "an organization of mutual cooperation."^[7] Since his death, other people have taken on the identity of "Reed Miller," even in the present day.^[5]

He was a legendary thief, infamous throughout the nations, who yearned to create "a world without boundaries," and buried a "great treasure" in what eventually became Nod-Krai, where he also founded the Treasure Hoarders. He was eventually executed for his crimes.^[8][9]

Story

Avrelian was the son of an unnamed Maiden of the Frostmoon Scions and a Snezhnayan officer around five hundred years ago.^[3][10] After his parents' death at the hand of Rotwang, he was adopted by Mikhnenko, a Snezhnayan military officer, and he attended the Snezhnayan Royal Military Academy and befriended Solovei.^[5]

He revealed his dream to Solovei, and the two participated in many treasure hunts between the Military Academy's drills. Another kid from the academy, Brahe, admired Avrelian and told him the location of one such treasure, despite being from a noble family. After graduating, Avrelian became a non-commissioned officer and faked his death to execute his dream.^[5]

He founded the Treasure Hoarders when he "raised the emblem of the black raven, gathered the forsaken and despised, and preached bold blasphemies". His goal was to build an Elysium for the hungry and the poor on the wealth of the high and haughty."^[11]

It's speculated that Rotwang always watched over Avrelian and planned to lure him into his service. He revealed Avrelian's origin and his destiny as the prophesied Ruler of Elysium, and convinced Avrelian to cooperate with him, as they were both "chosen by fate."^[12] Avrelian believed his word and began to work for him, notably by stealing the Sampo Mill from the Frostmoon Scions^[13] and coincidently rescuing Alia from them.^[14]

Later on, Solovei, persuaded by his fellow nobles,^[15] convinced Avrelian to leave his organisation behind and explain himself to the Belyi Tsar.^[5][16] Alia, who had joined the Treasure Hoarders, voiced her concern about the plan but was rebuffed.^[17] Avrelian listened to seek an audience with the Belyi Tsar, but instead was captured on the spot without even meeting the Tsar.^[5] His public execution was witnessed by both Solovei and Alia, and after his death, Alia donned the mask and became the second person with the name Reed Miller.^[5][18]
