Kamanosuke

Kamanosuke, also called Kama for short, is Ukinami Yuzuha's tanuki companion who aids her in combat.

Profile

Kama is a tanuki and the companion of Yuzuha, helping her in combat while also serving as her partner in crime when she pulls her various pranks. He is highly protective of Yuzuha, and remains with her at all times.

History

Some years ago, Kama was being held underwater by some children, drowning in the process. Yuzuha saw this and scared the children off, and as soon as he was free, Kama escaped the scene. However, he was appreciative of what she had done for him, and began to shadow her after that.^[1] Later, when Yuzuha found herself struggling in a Hollow, Kama came to her rescue. Following this the two became companions, and she gave him the name 'Kamanosuke'.

When the pair first met Komano Manato, Kama attacked him on sight, thoroughly clobbering him. He continued to be resistant to Manato's presence for some time, though this was entirely due to Kama percieving him as a disguised bad guy, and left Manato feeling pretty down about the situation. After a while, Kama warmed up to him.

When Porcelumex's investigation team arrived at Waifei Peninsula, Kama helped Yuzuha in pranking Alice Thymefield, but left pawprints at the scene of the crime. Due to this, Alice and Phaethon were able to track him down and chased him all the way to Mystic Wares. Kama continued to help Yuzuha throughout this time as she worked with both Phaethon and Alice to uncover what was happening in the Lemnian Hollow. After uncovering the truth behind Porcelumex's collaboration with The Exaltists, the group were ambushed and imprisoned by Ferox and his subordinates. After Manato was seperated from the group, and the guards were called away due to the Ethereals the Exaltists had left behind, Kama recovered the groups gear while Phaethon was unconcious, though he struggled greatly to retrieve Manato's sword due to its weight.

As the group escaped, Yuzuha opted to stay behind and sacrifice herself to allow the others to escape, with Kama staying by her side throughout. At some point between Yuzuha confronting Ferox and Phaethon's return to the Hollow with Obol Squad and Alice, he was seperated from Yuzuha due to the Miasmic Fiend's rampage around the laboratory. He was picked up by the group and joined them as they confronted the monster, reuniting with Yuzuha after it was destroyed.

Trivia

Etymology

• Kamanosuke's name comes from the Japanese folklore Bunbuku Chagama (Japanese: 分福茶釜 Bunbuku Chagama, "Good-fortune-Sharing Tea Kettle"), which kama means "kettle" or "pot". In the story, a tanuki would shift its shape into a chagama (tea kettle) to be sold, in order to pay back the kindness from the person aided it.
