Eroch

Eroch was a former Inspector for the Knights of Favonius, and was most notably the reason why Diluc left the Knights of Favonius four years before the start of the game.

Profile

Eroch was born to the same generation as Crepus, Frederica Gunnhildr, and Varka, and while he often criticized Varka for his shortcomings as a knight,^[2] the two were friends. After becoming Grand Master, Varka placed a great deal of trust in Eroch and left him in charge of Mondstadt's affairs whenever he left for expeditions, unaware that Eroch had grown resentful of his position and popularity. Dottore capitalized on this, convincing Eroch to turn traitor so they could "lay claim to the power of the heavens."^[1]

Eroch unsealed Ursa the Drake and conducted an experiment which ended with Crepus dying while fending off Ursa.^[1] Eroch's subsequent cover-up enraged Diluc, and he resigned from his post as Captain.^[3][4] The truth was also discovered by Jean, who informed Varka via letter;^[5] Varka conferred her the authority to investigate and punish Eroch, and returned to Mondstadt as quickly as he could. Eroch, ousted and cornered, committed suicide in front of Varka while laughing in his face.^[1]

Story

In their youth, Eroch often criticized Varka for falling short of the chivalric code.^[2] Grand Master Valentine, however, saw Varka's potential and ordered Varka to discover his own reason for becoming a knight by traveling abroad.^[6] After several years, Varka returned with famous adventurer Seamus Pegg and joined the Knights of Favonius, becoming the Knight of Boreas and eventually, the Grand Master. This, along with Varka's tendency to leave Mondstadt to go on expeditions, caused Eroch to fester with resentment. Dottore took advantage of this to goad Eroch into turning traitor, undermining the Knights of Favonius over the course of several years. While Varka was blind to this until it was too late,^[1] it appears that some Knights of Favonius members already had their suspicions about Eroch — one of Kaeya's letters to Diluc following the incident suggests that even without the incident, Jean was going to have to deal with Eroch sooner or later if she were to become Master of the Knights.^{[5][Note 1]}

Eroch was entrusted with maintaining the seal which kept Ursa the Drake in slumber. However, four years before the start of the game, he broke the seal and allowed Ursa to awaken.^[1] On Diluc's eighteenth birthday, Fatui-backed saboteurs lured Ursa the Drake into attacking the Dawn Winery's caravan, which contained both Diluc and Crepus. Diluc could not defeat the drake even with his Vision, but Crepus used a Delusion to defeat it at the cost of his own life. After returning to the Knights of Favonius headquarters, Eroch ordered Diluc to cover the incident up to protect the Knights' reputation. Diluc was enraged by this order and immediately resigned from the Knights,^[3][4] with Eroch subsequently claiming credit for defeating the drake.^[7] Jean reported the matter to Varka, who had his inner circle — Elishka and Dunkhas among them^[8] — investigate the incident.^[5]

After confirming Eroch's betrayal, Varka conferred Jean with the authority to punish Eroch as she saw fit.^[7] At some point between the investigation and Eroch's final punishment, Eroch and Jean participated in two official duels before the rest of the knights. Jean failed to defeat him in their first duel, but dominated him in their second.^[9] Eroch was discharged from the Knights of Favonius,^[10][11] but his allies inside Mondstadt continued trying to undermine the Knights' authority. Jean was promoted to Master of the Knights and successfully uprooted the traitors while also fending off the Fatui,^[12] which had gained influence in Mondstadt after Dottore slew Ursa the Drake.^[13] These accomplishments caused Jean to gain a Vision.^[12]

At some point after his dismissal, Eroch was personally cornered by Varka. Rather than face punishment at Varka's hands, Eroch chose to take his own life, laughing all the while.^[1]

Trivia

• Eroch and Diluc's meeting about Ursa the Drake was held in an office usually used by Amber's Grandfather, leading Amber — who had been hiding in a cupboard to prank her grandfather when he returned — to overhear the entire conversation.^[14] Sometime later within that year, her grandfather disappeared, leading people to suspect he had turned traitor.^[15] It is currently unknown whether his disappearance was related to the events unfolding around Eroch.
