Pyro Archon

The Pyro Archon is the God of War^[1] among The Seven who presides over Natlan, the land of Pyro. They bear the divine name Haborym.^[2] They are entrusted with the responsibility to protect and fuel the Sacred Flame which protects Natlan and its warriors.

Although they are referred to as gods,^[3][4] all Pyro Archons originate as humans who win the position through battle.^[5] As Pyro Archons are still mortals who age and die like regular humans, Natlan has had many Pyro Archons in the past. When a new Pyro Archon ascends to the divine throne, their "inner flame" will awaken, and the Sacred Flame grants them significant knowledge and memory of the land.^[6]

Special Circumstances

Mavuika specifically possessed a unique right to wield the power of the Ruler of Death Ronova once for a brief period, at the cost of her fated death.^[7]

Known Archons

At least eight named holders of this title are known:

1. Xbalanque, the first Pyro Archon.^[8] He established the current "rules" of Natlan through which ordinary people can ascend to archonhood.^[6]
2. Ndenge, one of the individuals that the Abyssal beast Gosoythoth mimics in its final battle against the Traveler and Mavuika.^[9][10]
3. Xumucul, one of the individuals that the Abyssal beast Gosoythoth mimics in its final battle against the Traveler and Mavuika.^[9][10]
4. Cochanina, an ancient Pyro Archon who drove the Volcano Lord out of the land of the People of the Springs.^[11] Also worked to temporarily contain the Bakunawa.^[12]
5. Gloharry, one of the ancient Pyro Archons who worked to contain the Bakunawa in the Mare Jivari. From the stone tablet written by Gloharry it can be implied that Gloharry presumbly met a similar fate like Cochanina, another Pyro Archon who also worked to contain the beast.^[12]
6. Shulevitz, an ancient Pyro Archon, who worked to temporarily contain the Bakunawa.^[12]
7. Isaja, one of the ancient Pyro Archons who worked to contain the Bakunawa in the Mare Jivari. Based on a booklet that gave the latest update of the task, it can be implied that Isaja was the one to finally complete the task initiated by the previous Pyro Archons before Isaja, as Isaja seems joyful when writing "Task complete" in the booklet.^[12]
8. Mavuika, the current Pyro Archon. She was also the Pyro Archon during the time of the cataclysm, but placed her life in the Sacred Flame to be resurrected in the present day.^[13]

Furthermore, two unnamed holders, of unknown relation to the named ones, are known:

1. The scarlet-eyed youth, the second Pyro Archon. He led the Tribes of Natlan to defeat Och-Kan,^[14] and asked Sakkuk to erase his name from history after his death.^[15]
2. A female Pyro Archon that was acquainted with Venti.^{[16][Note 1]}

Trivia

• Considering the Mesoamerican influence of Natlan, the role of the Pyro Archon could possibly be inspired by the Aztec god Huītzilōpōchtli and K’iche Mayan god Tohil, as both gods were believed to be solar deities associated with war and fire, characteristics that are present in the Pyro Archon's element and ideal.
• The Pyro Archon originally chosen and fated by the Heavenly Principles to rule Natlan was not a human, but the half-dragon "Sacred Lord," Och-Kan. Xbalanque's usurpation of this mantle, and of Fate itself is believed by the first Cryo Archon, the Belyi Tsar, to have been the cumulative result of millennia of small or great rebellions against Celestia's tyranny.^[17]

Etymology

• Degei pronounced Ndengei, enshrined as a serpent, is the supreme god of Fiji in Fijian mythology.
• Considering its pronunciation in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, Xumucul may be derived from Cumucul, the eldest son of the two supreme deities of the Tboli people, an Austronesian indigenous people of South Cotabato in southern Mindanao in the Philippines. Cumucul is said to have been given a cohort of fire, a tok (sword), and a shield.
• Shulevitz (Hebrew: שולביץ) is a surname of Jewish origin.
• Isaja may be derived from Isaiah (Hebrew: יְשַׁעְיָהוּ‎), meaning "Yahweh is salvation".
