Tsaritsa
Last updated 2026-09-08
The Tsaritsa (Russian: Царица Tsaritsa), also known by her name Anastasya Feodorovna Snezhnaya (Russian: Анастасия Фёдоровна Снежная Anastasiya Fyodorovna Snezhnaya), is the current Cryo Archon of The Seven, preceded by the Belyi Tsar. After assuming control over Snezhnaya during the Cataclysm, she cemented her authority by establishing the Fatui under Pierro to suppress dissidents, abolishing the feudal Snowland Fae aristocracy, and replacing their political dominance with the Snezhnograd Veche.
Over the past several centuries, she and Pierro have recruited powerful individuals from across Teyvat as the Eleven Fatui Harbingers. With their aid, Snezhnaya has become the most militarily and technologically developed nation on the continent, and uses this to intervene in the other nations in pursuit of her final goal: overthrowing the Heavenly Principles. Her ambition to consolidate The Seven's Gnoses in her grasp has been one of the driving questions behind the Traveler's journey.
Profile
As the Cryo Archon of The Seven, the Tsaritsa is granted elemental power from both the Cryo Gnosis[7] and the Cryo Authority within her seat among the Divine Thrones of Celestia.[8] Over the course of the Traveler's journey, she has also come to possess five of the other six Gnoses, with the sole exception of the Pyro Gnosis.[5]
The Tsaritsa has the ability to grant her subjects a power separate from Visions, called Delusions. These Delusions are used by the Fatui, particularly by the Eleven Fatui Harbingers.[9][7]
According to Columbina, the Tsaritsa "has never acknowledged, nor accepted" her own powers and therefore rarely uses them.[10]
Unlike some of the other Archons, the Tsaritsa is directly involved in the day-to-day administration of her nation; she holds absolute power in Snezhnaya and reigns from her seat in Zapolyarny Palace.[9] Decrees published by the Tsaritsa are called Edicts and are considered the highest level of authority in the nation.[11] The Fatui, who are responsible for most aspects of governance in Snezhnaya,[12] have as their primary purpose to enact her will throughout Teyvat.[9] The Fatui Harbingers all answer to her and receive their appointments from her,[7] either directly in the palace or communicated via Pierro on her behalf.[13][14] The nobility, most of whom hold no political power, possess their titles at her pleasure.[15][16] Nod-Krai, though part of the sovereign territory of Snezhnaya,[17] was granted full autonomy from Snezhnayan governmental institutions by an Edict of the Tsaritsa.[18][19]
The Tsaritsa's son
The Tsaritsa had a son with distinctive pupils in the shape of a four-pointed star,[5] a trait that was eventually inherited by her descendants, the Khaenri'ahns.[6][20]
Appearance
The Tsaritsa has the appearance of a young woman with pale skin, long silver hair, pale blue eyes, and pointed ears. In the past, she wore her hair down, but she now wears it in a braided updo. Others have commented on her stony, unreadable expression,[21][22] while her gaze is said to be "cold but pure."[23]
Personality
The Tsaritsa is diametrically described as being cold and stern by her Harbingers,[21][10][24] as well as being gentle and compassionate,[25][26][27] although it is suggested that she has sealed her emotions beneath her icy demeanor.[21][27] From her actions immediately after the Cataclysm, she may be considered iron-willed, if not to the point of ruthlessness, particularly in her renunciation of the nobility.[16]
The Tsaritsa was left deeply changed by the events of the Cataclysm,[7] and Dainsleif characterizes her thusly in the Teyvat Chapter Storyline Preview: "She is a god with no love left for her people, nor do they have any left for her. Her followers only hope to be on her side when the day of her rebellion against the divine comes at last."
Story
Background
Anastasya and her son
At least six thousand years ago, during the era of the unified civilization, Anastasya Feodorovna had an unnamed son;[5] the fate of her son is unknown, but her descendants eventually became the Khaenri'ahns.[6][Note 1]
During the Cataclysm 500 years ago, she succeeded the Belyi Tsar as Cryo Archon following his demise during his expedition, and was crowned Tsaritsa of all Snezhnaya.[18][16] Some of the Snowland Fae nobility, furious a non-fae had taken the throne,[28] refused to recognize the Tsaritsa as their new ruler: some did not seek an audience with her, while others, such as the Dalegrad clan, broke ties with Snezhnograd altogether.[16] The Tsaritsa was left severely embittered by the events of the Cataclysm, and cut ties with other Archons, including Venti.[7]
Shortly following the Cataclysm, she approved Solovei's proposal to establish the Lightkeepers and allow Nod-Krai to govern itself as an autonomous region within Snezhnaya.[18][19]
During the second year of the Tsaritsa's reign, the humans of Port Belovodye decided to take advantage of the succession crisis and rebelled against the Fae ruling class by declaring self-governance. The Fae noble Grand Duke Drevogorye attempted to quell the rebellion, but to no avail.[16] The following year, the Tsaritsa established the Fatui with Pierro as its first member[13] and leader[29] and then directed them to recapture the port. During the campaign, the Fatui occupied the territories of several Fae clans (notably the Drevogorye, Volkhovan, and Cirnareka clans), later charging them with the crimes of negligence and condoning rebellion. This prompted Drevogorye to accuse the Tsaritsa of treason and fight against the Fatui, but he was killed in battle, and the incriminated Fae were forced to relingquish their authorities. Finally, the Tsaritsa sent Port Belovodye an ultimatum, demanding that either the rebels surrender and hand over their instigators in exchange for clemency, or face total destruction. These terms were accepted, and the rebellion ended without further incident.[16]
After stabilizing Snezhnaya, the Tsaritsa began a series of reforms in her nation, aimed at crippling the Fae's aristocracy's political power while strengthening the status of humanity in her court. Firstly, she sent emissaries to all fae princes who had not come to seek an audience with her, and demanded they relinquish their princely titles. Many died before responding, while the remainder acceded. Secondly, she strengthened the Fatui by ordering them to build a new fortress near Snezhnograd, named Glupov. Lastly, she replaced the Fae aristocracy with the Snezhnograd Veche as an administrative organ, headed by a human, I. Ivanovna N.. On the 7th year of her reign, she issued the Imperial Order Reformation Edict, in which many princely Fae, "deeply grateful for the Tsaritsa's mercy and virtue", voluntarily forsook their noble titles and departed Snezhnaya;[16] many would choose to reside in Novokitezhgrad, where their descendants continue to live in the present day.[30]
Around three to four centuries ago,[31][Note 2] she invited Kuutar to the Fatui, bestowing upon her the name Columbina together with the position as Third Harbinger, telling her that they would be like a second home to her, which she accepted.[32]
Over a decade ago,[Note 3] the Tsaritsa pardoned House of the Hearth orphan Peruere of the crime of killing a Harbinger—Crucabena, the former House of the Hearth director—and promoted her as Crucabena's replacement, bestowing the name Arlecchino to her.[14] Some time later, she promoted Ajax to the position of Eleventh Harbinger, granting him the name Tartaglia.[13]
Shortly before the start of the Traveler's journey, the Tsaritsa launched her plan to collect the Gnoses of the other six Archons. Pierro then held a meeting with the Harbingers in which he outlined the details of the plan to them on her behalf.[33]
At some point, the Tsaritsa became acquainted with Danica, a maid whose family had served the Tsaritsa for generations, and Vesna, the current captain of the Druzhna.
Present
Signora collected the Anemo and Geo Gnoses, taking the former by force from Venti, and receiving the latter from Zhongli as part of a "contract to end all contracts" offered to him by the Tsaritsa. When Paimon inquired as to what she offered, Zhongli cryptically told her and the Traveler that they would have to find out themselves in their journey across Teyvat.[34]
After Signora's death in Inazuma, the Tsaritsa held a funeral for her in Snezhnaya. Before the proceedings began, she played a game of chess with Pierro (with the already collected Anemo and Geo Gnoses placed on the board as chess pieces), using her powers to remotely move her pieces. After all of the Fatui Harbingers arrived to pay their respects—except Scaramouche, who had gone missing—the Tsaritsa froze her tomb along with the entire mausoleum, encasing it in thick layers of ice.[5][35][Note 4]
In Sumeru, Dottore claimed that the Tsaritsa had called him back to Snezhnaya, a command he ostensibly fulfilled by sending one of his segments instead. The segment that stayed behind was able to successfully acquire both the Electro Gnosis (that Scaramouche had previously taken and gone missing with), along with the Dendro Gnosis held by Nahida after exchanging knowledge with her.[36]
In Fontaine, Arlecchino obtained the Tsaritsa's permission to use the Hydro Gnosis first to potentially avert the disaster foretold by the prophecy of the Primordial Sea before handing it over to the Tsaritsa.[37] After the prophecy was subverted through other means, Arlecchino was given the Hydro Gnosis by Neuvillette as a "diplomatic gift," which she later gave to the Tsaritsa.[38]
After Capitano duelled Mavuika for her Gnosis and later refused to capitalize on her weakness, he sent a letter to the Tsaritsa requesting to be relieved of his duty to acquire the Gnosis. She agreed to the request, and after he sacrificed his life force to get revenge on Ronova, she notably kept his rank intact. Mavuika suspected that the Tsaritsa would dispatch another Harbinger to collect the Pyro Gnosis for her.[39]
During a meeting between three of the Four Great Rulers discussing the missing whereabouts of Asmoday, Ronova sensed Pierro defiantly gazing upon her, quips at the Tsaritsa trying to overthrow the Heavenly Principles with her "paltry powers," and suggests that the Shades intervene within the "extent permitted by the rules." Meanwhile, Pierro makes his way to Nasha Town, where he declares on behalf of the Tsaritsa that "even the gods have their limits."[40]
Before Columbina left the Fatui and fled to Nod-Krai, she "fulfilled her promise" to the Tsaritsa that required parting with a great deal of her power.[41] Shortly after, the Tsaritsa issued the Palestar Edict, calling for the Fatui to find and arrest Columbina at all costs, and assigned three Harbingers—Dottore, Sandrone, and Arlecchino—to oversee Fatui operations in Nod-Krai.
Following Rerir's expulsion from Teyvat, Arlecchino grew suspicious of Dottore's motives, and asked the Tsaritsa to recall him to Snezhnaya on the basis of redundancy. The Tsaritsa agreed and Dottore seemingly complied,[42] but in reality stayed behind to attack Columbina and attempt to steal the power of the Three Moons.[43]
Learning of Dottore's rogue behaviour and the now-growing situation in Nod-Krai, the Tsaritsa sent Tartaglia to assist Arlecchino in evacuation efforts while having the Fatui Internal Affairs division investigate Dottore's conduct. The division concluded that Dottore had gone against the Tsaritsa's will, which granted Arlecchino and Sandrone executive authority to eliminate Dottore should the need arise.[44] Once the situation was handled, she also rescinded the Palestar Edict.[10] Afterwards, she summoned Pantalone and Pulcinella before her to answer for the recent events; Pantalone excused any involvement he had with Dottore on pressure from the latter's seniority.[45]
The Tsaritsa is currently overseeing a massive plan known as Project Stuzha. While its details are unknown, it is connected to a concept or thing known as "Mistilteinn".[10] By the time the Traveler arrived in inner Snezhnaya, the Tsaritsa had already embarked on a campaign against a monster that had been creating endless snowstorms to the east, departing with Danica, Vesna and some of the Druzhna. By the end of Archon Quest Chapter VII: Act II - Wraith's Nocturne, the Tsaritsa had returned from the campaign. According to Pierro, had it not been for the monster, she would have gladly granted an audience with the Traveler and he tells them to speak to her more about her plans in their next meeting.

Trivia
- Among The Seven, the Tsaritsa's ideal is currently the only one left unconfirmed. However, it is suspected to be love:
- In the Teyvat Story Chapter Preview, Dainsleif states that she is a "god with no love left" in the opening sentence in the Snezhnaya Chapter, where he mentions the Archons' ideals in their respective chapters.
- Wanderer mentions her "love" as another form of "sin".[25]
- In the Chinese name for Shivada Jade Gemstone and its item series, "Shivada" is instead 哀叙冰 Āixù Bīng, "Grieving Ice," lit. "Grief-Narrating Ice." The word for "grief," 哀 āi, is a near-homophone for "love," 爱 ài.
- In Japanese, the name is 哀切なアイスクリスタル Aisetsu-na Aisu Kurisutaru, "Plaintive Ice Crystal." The kanji meaning "grief," 哀, in this case using the reading ai, is a homophone with the kanji meaning "love," 愛 ai; furthermore, the actual word for grief or sadness, 哀しみ kanashimi, has an archaism meaning love or affection, written 愛しみ kanashimi.
- During Transcendence Trailer - "Sudden Snow", the Tsaritsa herself mentions "love" twice.
- Her predecessor, the Belyi Tsar, was called the God of Love.

- The Tsaritsa is referred to by the following form of address:

- Her Royal Highness
Etymology
- A Tsaritsa is the female equivalent of a Tsar. The title has multiple spellings, including Tsarina.
- "Anastasya" is a Slavic name from the Greek name Anástasia (Greek: Αναστασία), from anastasis (Greek: ἀνάστασις) meaning "resurrection."
- "Anastasya" may refer to Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova, youngest daughter of Nicholas II, the last sovereign of Imperial Russia.
- The name could also be derived from Anastasia Romanovna Zakharyina-Yurieva, the first Tsaritsa of Russia, wife of Ivan IV. Anastasia was described as virtuous and the most kind. Her death had a severe impact on Ivan's mental health and was one of the reasons that intensified his struggle with the boyars.
- Feodorovna (Russian: Фёдоровна Fyodorovna) is a Russian patronymic, meaning "daughter of Feodor." Feodor (Russian: Фёдор Fyodor) comes from the Greek name Theodoros (Greek: Θεόδωρος), literally meaning "god's gift."
- "Feodorovna" may refer to the patronymic given to the foreign female consorts upon marrying emperors and grand dukes of Romanov dynasty upon orthodox conversion, in the event that their father's name could not be turned into one. The patronymic comes from the Feodorovskaya Icon.
- The patronymic may also reference Michael I, the first Tsar of Russia from the House of Romanov, who bore the same patronymic.
Notes
- ↑ According to Scribe's Box, Khaenri'ah was established around the same time as Sal Vindagnyr fell, which happened 6,000 years ago during the war of funerary flame. Though it is theoretically possible that the Tsaritsa's bloodline could have spread into the Khaenri'ahn population at a later date, the nation's endogamous practices makes this unlikely. It is therefore reasonable to assume that the Tsaritsa's son or another descendant was present in the founding population of Khaenri'ah.
- ↑ Columbina is indicated to have joined the Fatui during the lifetime of the original Zandik, though after he had created several Segments, which places her join date at some point after Dottore's involvement in the Tatarasuna Mystery 400 years ago.
- ↑ According to The Truest Thing in Lyney's Story Quest, Felis Fuscus Chapter: Act I - The Forgotten Thief, Lyney and Lynette were House of the Hearth agents when they met Cesar ten years ago, and they were recruited after Arlecchino became a Harbinger. Given that Freminet joined while Crucabena was alive, Arlecchino's promotion is unlikely to reach the twenty-year mark.
- ↑ Though not shown directly, the Tsaritsa's presence is implied and can be deduced from the mysteriously appearing cold responsible for moving the opposing player's chess pieces against Pierro, the creeping ice in the hallway, and the final freezing of the entire building. Pierro also comments that Signora's final resting place is a "gift from the Tsaritsa." Additionally, in "Sudden Snow," the Tsaritsa's powers are depicted as a growing spread of ice emanating from her touch, with a visual of the frozen mausoleum shown shortly afterwards.
- ↑ During early parts of the game and the manga, the Chinese term for the Cryo Archon 风神 Fēngshén, "Ice God", was variously translated as "Cryo God," "God of Cryo," or "Archon of Ice."
