Mare Jivari
Last updated 2026-06-29
The Mare Jivari was an area in the westernmost part[2] of Tenochtzitoc, Natlan. It became known as the Mare Jivari after a large-scale battle involving Sanhaj Kompore and Tenoch during the cataclysm.[3] While the Mare Jivari is presently described as an empty place,[4] and as an "endless plain of ash where the wind does not blow,"[5] it once contained a sea of fire.[6]
An Abyssal simulation of the Mare Jivari is accessed during The Surprise That Awaits Us All! in Story Quest Sunspray Summer Resort: Part III.[Note 1] A portion of the Mare Jivari becomes permanently accessible through the World Quest The Last Survivor of Tenochtzitoc and can be revisited by touching the throne in the Pyro Archon Temple and entering a portal in a Night Kingdom-like area. The area is treated as a Special Story Mode and the surrounding area is affected by Smoldering Ashes. It can only be exited through a portal that spawns upon defeating the Bakunawa, with a "Leave Domain" prompt, or by exiting the Special Story Mode.
More of the Mare Jivari will be explorable in future versions.[7]

Lore
The Mare Jivari is under the effects of a temporal disruption phenomenon.[8] After being polluted by the Abyss during the cataclysm, Barbatos used his powers over Time to blow it off the timeline and prevent its Abyssal corruption from spreading, therefore initiating a series of historical discrepancies:[9] the Mare Jivari was created in the cataclysm 500 years ago, yet records of its existence have existed for a thousand years.[10]
Ancient History
According to legend, a phoenix dwelled within the Mare Jivari, which was worshipped by people as a totem, while kings saw it as a sign of nobility.[11]
At an unknown point in time, a sage known as the Lavawalker created a circlet that could withstand the sea of fire within the Mare Jivari. Envious and fearful, his teacher and peers decried this as blasphemy and ordered him to walk into the Mare Jivari while wearing it. He did so — and survived. He continued wandering in and out of the Mare Jivari for another one hundred years, until the sea of flames finally burned him to ash during his final journey.[12]
Around a thousand years ago, the Wanderer's Troupe set foot there while "performing" for their foes.[13] The flautist of the Trope encountered the Bakunawa, and they carved the Runestone from its body.[10]
Cataclysm
During the Abyss' invasion of Natlan, the Bakunawa appeared west of Tenochtzitoc, and was said to have "devoured entire villages of tribespeople." The lost settlement of Tenochtzitoc fought the beast to the last, until only Tenoch remained.[3] Observing the destruction of his home, Tenoch decided to rally the bickering tribes to fight the back against the "turbid black tide," and gathered six allies to form Natlan's tribal coalition.[14] Tenoch and the six heroes initiated a campaign at the Mare Jivari.[2][15]
According to legend, Sanhaj, a renowned Border Master from the Masters of the Night-Wind, summoned a miniature Night Kingdom and used it to destroy the encroaching calamity. In reality, Sanhaj performed Phlogiston Engraving on Tenoch's body and Tenoch allowed himself to be consumed whole by the Bakunawa. Sanhaj activated the array and the clashing powers of the Abyss, the Lord of the Night, and Tenoch's spirit created a violent explosion that fractured the Bakunawa into "innumerable pieces,"[2] killing Sanhaj and Tenoch in the process.[16]
Despite their efforts, the Bakunawa still retained the potential to be revitalized and its power could corrupt the passage of time.[2] To prevent this from infecting other regions of Teyvat, Barbatos blew the entire Mare Jivari off the timeline before he started his hibernation.[9] Because of the temporal disruption, the souls of the people that perished in the Mare Jivari were imprisoned and bound in the land, and foreign souls were unable to return to their homeland.[17] At some point, some of these souls merged with the local Monetoo, and around twenty years ago, the Asha started being sighted around Tenochtzitoc.[9]
Post-Cataclysm
Many adventurers challenged the Mare Jivari to prove themselves, but fell to the dangers within.[3][5] Some time before the game's events, a famous Mondstadt adventurer named Stanley traversed the Mare Jivari along with a greenhorn adventurer named Hans Archibald. They were attacked by an evil beast and Stanley sacrificed himself to ensure Hans' escape. Afterwards, Hans took on the name "Stanley" and went on to recount the real Stanley's tales as though they were his own, to keep the man's memory alive.[18]
As Tecpatl's Flintblades were adventuring around Tenochtzitoc, they wandered into the Mare Jivari and were ambushed by Abyssal monsters. The group fell and used their dying wishes as fuel to protect the infant Bennett.[17] Bennett survived and was discovered by an elderly adventurer who took him to Mondstadt and died of his injuries before he could give much detail of how and where he found the baby.[19]
Around twenty[2] to thirty[3] years prior to the events of the game, people who visited the Mare Jivari began to claim that an enormous, dark creature the size of a mountain began roaming the Mare Jivari. Shortly after the monster's arrival, the whole region vanished off the face of the earth. Since its' disappearance, more people began settling in the area[3] and shortly after the end of the Night Warden Wars, the Easybreeze Holiday Resort was established and started trial operations.[20]
Present Day
Around the time the Traveler arrives in Natlan, Enjou likewise ventures there to research the Mare Jivari's history and ways to access it. During the Scions of the Canopy's Tribal Chronicles, Yupanqui's Turnfire, his activities around Huitztlan cause him to encounter Kinich and later, the Traveler.[21] During the Event Iktomi Spiritseeking Scrolls, he uses Leyla as bait to get Citlali to figure out the Mare Jivari's location; while she realizes his ploy immediately afterwards and lays a trap for him, he manages to escape.[22]
During the Event Story Quest Sunspray Summer Resort, Mavuika collaborates with Barbatos — now known as Venti — so the latter could guide the lost souls of Mondstadter adventurers back home. While investigating the history of Tecpatl's Flintblades, a group consisting of the Traveler, Paimon, Bennett, Chasca, Mualani, and Venti enter an Abyssal simulation of the Mare Jivari. Bennett is separated from the group and targeted by the Abyss for escaping as an infant. The group conduct a prayer to revitalize him, using a Miniature "Sun"; unbeknownst to them, it was also the signal for Mavuika to open a rift between the false Mare Jivari and the true Mare Jivari, so Venti could collect the souls that wished to return.[9]
Afterwards, during the World Quest The Last Survivor of Tenochtzitoc, the Traveler and Paimon investigate a resort employee re-enacting Tenoch's life. They discover that Enjou is behind the incident, and the two partner up with Citlali to subdue him and find out his true intentions before he locates the Mare Jivari. Eventually, the Traveler and Paimon enter a restricted version of Mare Jivari, and alongside Enjou who has made a pact with Citlali, restrain the Bakunawa's permeation. Despite learning a great deal about Teyvat's history and civilizations over the course of his journey, Enjou finds that none of them are the forgotten homeland which he is seeking. He decides to enter the true Mare Jivari, a place which cannot be entered without the Bakunawa's power, and bids farewell to the Traveler and Citlali.

Trivia
- There are several oddities about how the Mare Jivari functions[What does this mean?] and is accessed:
- Upon entering the Pyro Archon Temple, Citlali loses contact with the Wayob but can still feel the presence of the Night Kingdom. The Traveler speculates that this is due to Sanhaj's use of Phlogiston Engraving to create a miniature Night Kingdom.[2]
- The spirit trace Citlali left on Enjou is consumed by a "strange power" once Enjou enters the true Mare Jivari.[2]
- Several stone inscriptions in the Pyro Archon Temple allude to previous Pyro Archons' attempts to hide the temple and contain the Bakunawa, using techniques unknown to Citlali. She speculates that the attempts to prevent the Bakunawa's escape may have caused the Mare Jivari's disappearance twenty to thirty years ago;[2] according to Venti, it is unrelated to his blowing it off the timeline 500 years ago.[9]
- Nahida calls it "one of the many places beyond [her] reach,"[4] implying that events there are not recorded in Irminsul.
- Bennett makes a reference to Mare Jivari in his love poem for the Windblume Festival.[25]
- Due to the difficulty of accessing the Mare Jivari, Kinich has yet to take a commission regarding it.[15]
Etymology
- "Mare" means "sea" in Latin, while "Jivari" is likely derived from the Swahili word jivu "ash" and the Latin suffix -aris.
- The Chinese and Japanese names for Mare Jivari translate to "Silent Sea of Ashes." This name is kept in other localizations through the Loading Screen's description of Mare Jivari.
- In the first Closed Beta Test, the English localization translated Mare Jivari as the "Ashen Sea."[26]
Notes
- ↑ In The Surprise That Awaits Us All!, it is referred to as a Domain (秘境 "unexplored region; mysterious realm"), the same term used by Cyrus in Adventurer's Entrance Exam. Once its nature as an Abyssal simulation is revealed in A Curtain Call for a Colorful Summer Night!, it is instead referred to as both a "Domain" and "space" (空间 "space; empty place") by Bennett and Venti, respectively. 秘境, while typically referring to Domains in-game, is a free-standing term in modern Chinese; this leaves it ambiguous as to whether the true Mare Jivari is meant to be a Domain rather than an Area.
