Last updated 2026-02-21

The Bakunawa is an Enemy that is first encountered in the World Quest The Last Survivor of Tenochtzitoc.

After defeating the Bakunawa, it will be temporarily sealed and can be challenged again after 72 hours. Upon defeating it for the second and third time, the player will receive Someone's Tattered Notes (II) Someone's Tattered Notes (II) and Corroded Tattered Notes (III) Corroded Tattered Notes (III), respectively.

Abilities and Attacks

Wayob Assist
While battling the Bakunawa, A special ability is available to the player, which summons the power of the Wayob harbored within the Calamity of Eshu and briefly spawns a shield, protecting the player from DMG.
Wind Orb
Conjures a massive wind orb and sends it toward the player. The orb explodes upon hitting the ground, dealing 100% ATK as Anemo DMG. This attack ignores i-frames provided by dashing.
Icy Smash
Forms a fist with one of its claws and slams it down, spawning a massive cascade of glaciers, dealing 100% ATK as Cryo DMG. This attack ignores i-frames provided by dashing.
Claw Swipe
Pulls the player in and slashes at them with one of its claws, dealing 100% ATK as Geo DMG. This attack ignores i-frames provided by dashing. Successfully defending against this attack with the Wayob Assist will cause a counterblow to be unleashed, temporarily paralyzing the Bakunawa.

While the Bakunawa is paralyzed, a rift will spawn, which can send the player into the air. Once in the air, using Wayob Assist again will fire a massive beam of energy at Bakunawa, removing one of its arms and causing it to lose HP. After one arm is removed, Wind Orb will be disabled. After both arms are removed, the Bakunawa will heal its wounds using ice, disabling Icy Smash and Claw Swipe but enabling Icicle Barrage, Earthshaking Stomp, and Ultimate.
Icicle Barrage
Fires a barrage of icicles from its healed wound, each dealing 70% ATK as Cryo DMG. The barrage spawns a number of frozen structures on the ground, which explode after some time, dealing 50% ATK as Cryo DMG.
Earthshaking Stomp
Stomps the ground, causing a shockwave that deals 100% ATK as Geo DMG.
Ultimate
Opens its stomach to gather energy. If not interrupted in time, the Bakunawa will unleash a devastating blow across the arena, instantly downing the active character.

While the Bakunawa is gathering energy, the player can use Wayob Assist to replace their Elemental Skill with Soulshard Rain. Soulshard Rain can be held to charge up, and when released, fires a barrage toward the Bakunawa's stomach, dealing Physical DMG and paralyzing it.

While the Bakunawa is paralyzed, a rift will spawn, which can send the player into the air. Once in the air, using Wayob Assist again will fire a massive beam of energy at Bakunawa, defeating it.

Lore

The Bakunawa is a dark creature the size of a mountain. It was created by Rhinedottir. Unlike her other creations, its immortality didn't come from the power of "Life," but a more transcendental form of Abyssal power that is beyond even the Abyss Order's understanding. Rhinedottir was unable to control it, as it attacked her and swallowed a part of her body. It first appeared on the western side of Natlan five hundreds years ago, accompanied by other Abyssal monsters, and devoured the tribespeople of Tenochtzitoc.[1]

The Bakunawa was impossible to kill, as its remains would somehow continue to grow and seek each other out until they form a new and revitalized Bakunawa. It was finally defeated when Tenoch allowed himself to get eaten by the monster after Sanhaj performed Phlogiston Engraving on his chest. Using Tenoch's body as the ritual offering, Sanhaj summoned a miniature Night Kingdom in the Bakunawa's stomach. The clash between the powers of the Abyss, the Lord of the Night, and Tenoch's spirit led to a violent explosion that shattered the Bakunawa into innumerable pieces, but some believe it never truly died and that its rebirth was only suppressed by the chaotic energies released by the blast. Afterward, the successive Pyro Archons built a temple to temporarily contain the Bakunawa.[2]

Around twenty to thirty years ago, there were reports of an enormous beast matching the Bakunawa's description roaming around the Mare Jivari. Shortly afterward, the entire region vanished, but it is unclear if or how this was related to the monster.[3]

According to Sucrose, the Runestone she provided to Orban was a relic left to the Knights of Favonius by the Wanderer's Troupe, and that the Runestone was carved from the Bakunawa's body after the flautist of the Wanderer's Troupe fought the Bakunawa in the Mare Jivari a thousand years ago.[4]

The Bakunawa's flesh was likely used by Albedo as one of the components for Durin's human body in order to offset the corrosive nature of the dragon's venom.[5]

The Traveler, Paimon and Enjou would later run into one of the Bakunawa's fragments, which attacked them as they approached it. They were able to subdue the beast, and Enjou took some power from it. Before leaving, he reveals his motives behind locating the Mare Jivari, he tells them that unless they obtain the Bakunawa's power, they would be unable to access the true Mare Jivari.[2]

Trivia

  • It may have taken the efforts of four Pyro Archons, namely Cochanina, Gloharry, Shulevitz and Isaja, to contain the Bakunawa, with Isaja being the one to finally complete the task.
  • The Bakunawa is the only enemy whose HP meter remains on-screen when its HP is depleted. The creature instead becomes invulnerable and inactive for 72 hours, at which point it regenerates its arms and recovers full HP. Its HP meter is only removed from the screen when the player leaves the Bakunawa's location. This is in keeping with the lore that the Bakunawa is an unkillable beast that always revives after being defeated.

Etymology

  • The Bakunawa's name may be inspired by the Bakunawa serpent from Philippine mythology. It is said to be a moon-eating dragon that dwells either in the sky or the underworld, causing natural phenomena such as eclipses, earthquakes, rain, and wind.
