Hark, also known as Hark the Crackjaw, is a quest-exclusive NPC that is subject of several Nod-Krai Intel Quests.

Profile

Hark was the helmsman of the pirate ship Atlas before it sank near the Eye of Kratti. He and others survived the wreck and made it to shore. In the present, Hark was the last man standing of the crew and stopped being a pirate.^[1]

Appearance

His escape from Nasha Town left him with a scar on his chin from a jaw wound that he deliberately hid it with a mask.^[2][3]

Story

After the Atlas shipwrecked, he left for Snezhnograd, but recently returned after having been a member of the "Peripatetic Circle" caravan for the past ten years. When the caravan's goods were stolen in Nasha Town, Hark became the prime suspect because of his past as a pirate and a spending spree at The Flagship after the theft. He denied everything and accused Juhani, a fellow crew member of the Atlas. Juhani, being better with words, was not suspected despite also being a former pirate. Hark also placed an amount of blame on Juhani for not having a scarred appearance like himself, which he saw as a factor in being accused instead of Juhani, and that his former crewmate "took everything from him." In an ensuing fight, Hark accidentally killed Juhani. The caravan kicked him out, and he fled the northern part of Lempo Isle.^[4] To his credit, in an examination of the facts, Nefer doubted that Hark was the thief, as the payoff was hardly worth throwing away ten years of good behaviour. However, after the glamour and wealth of piracy and ten years of trying to turn over a new leaf with a more humble life, being accused of theft greatly stung him and drove him to make poor decisions.

Several months before the Traveler arrived in Nod-Krai, Hark was spotted near the Nothing Passage, reportedly attacking and killing multiple people. Therefore, Leszek added him as a bounty target to the Flagship Bounty Board, but no one was able to find him.^[5][6]

His whereabouts were unknown until the Curatorium of Secrets received intel that treasure hunters were being attacked by a "ghost" while plundering the wreckage of the Atlas. During the Nod-Krai Intel Quest The Haunted Pirate Shipwreck, Nefer sends Jahoda to investigate, who learns from Ilmari that the "ghost" is actually Hark himself protecting the wreckage, who then continued to elude everyone.

During the Nod-Krai Intel Quest The Suspicious Hermit, evidence mounts that Hark took the identity of a suspicious hermit named Derwent. Derwent's acquaintances observed that he had undergone significant changes in his appearance and habits. Additionally, a traveling merchant, who regularly delivered goods to the hermit, had gone missing.^[2]

Later, during the Nod-Krai Intel Quest The Dust Settles, Nefer, Jahoda, the Traveler and Paimon piece together all the evidence and decide to confront Hark at Derwent's hut. When they talk to him, he becomes aggressive and attacks them. The Traveler and Nefer kill him in the ensuing fight.^[7]
