Small improvements...
- "Small improvements are the safest bet."
Dialogue
- Koch: Muskets aren't like crayon drawings – you can't just add something simply because you felt like it! Incremental, sensible upgrades are the only way forward... Some people are already slacking off on maintenance. The last thing we need is to throw radical modifications into the mix.
We modifying muskets here?
- Koch: Yes. As you can see, I'm a gunsmith with 8th Company. My job is to provide technical support to the marksmen in each squad.
- Koch: In recent years, we've started to equip muskets on a small scale.
- Koch: The muskets we're using, which are produced for us by Support Company's workshop, incorporate advanced technology from both Snezhnaya and Fontaine...
- Koch: In terms of overall performance, they're on par with the models used by the Special Security and Surveillance Patrol and the Oprichniki. For your run-of-the-mill monsters, they're more than enough.
- Koch: However, there are always knights who demand instant and overwhelming firepower. They keep hounding us to make major modifications to our tried-and-tested models.
- Koch: For example... They talk about switching from tubular magazines to box magazines. That way, you don't have to insert rounds one by one. Instead, you can clip in a whole box of rounds and off you go.
Wouldn't that make firing more efficient?
It does sounds pretty convenient...- Koch: That is correct, yes. To be clear, I am all for improving our firearms.
- Koch: But modifications like this are easier said than done, as they call for a whole suite of changes. For example, you'd also need to standardize the size and manufacturing of the metal clips, move to mass production, and implement proper packaging too.
- Koch: It's not just about a simple design tweak — Support Company will have to handle all that, too. They can badger me all they want, but I'm just a gunsmith!
- Koch: Loading mods aside, there's even an article from Snezhnaya which proposes the addition of a cam slot to the locking mechanism, linked to the bolt by a connecting rod, and using recoil to eject the spent casing...
- Koch: And then a spring built into the stock (or mounted externally) drives the bolt forward, automatically chambers the next round, and the musket continues firing...
Wow, that sounds like quite the beast.
You have to admit, rapid continuous fire does sound really powerful.- Koch: Ahem, I'd certainly love to have a weapon that can fire continuously in rapid succession too... especially those cutting-edge Fatui armaments they have in Nod-Krai.
- Koch: But since those rotary-barrel weapons aren't on the market yet at this time, we'll have to develop our own rapid-fire mechanisms...
- Koch: In fact, I did work with Herstal to create three prototypes and put them to the test in continuous-fire experiments.
- Koch: With the first prototype, we were unable to resolve the bolt's rotational unlocking issue. It kept jamming, so we had to modify the op rod.
- Koch: The second prototype's op rod shattered after we fired 97 rounds on it, and the rod fragments wrecked Herstal's antique teacup...
- Koch: In the third case, we found severe wear and tear in the prototype's chamber after firing some 240 rounds with it. The locking mechanism had failed, the stock was cracked open, and the spring was a goner too.
- Koch: We also faced several other thorny issues, like the weapon venting hot air directly into the firer's face, making it impossible to see.
- Koch: Eventually, I concluded that rapid continuous fire just isn't possible without a fundamental redesign of the weapon's basic structure.
- Koch: A side-linked bolt system simply isn't the answer, since the operating mechanism has to be aligned with the barrel axis to prevent uneven points of stress.
- Koch: ...I do wonder if we could use a combination of components like rollers and locking recesses to delay bolt unlocking. That might just mitigate the chamber pressure issue just enough...
Who's getting lazy with their maintenance? Go straighten him out!
- Koch: It's Gunther. He keeps dumping his weapon cleaning on us gunsmiths because "he's the perennial champ of the company's shoots."
- Koch: Argh... Muskets are works of art, for goodness' sake! If I were a better shot than him, I'd make him bow his head and apologize to those muskets properly!
- (Available before completing Koch's Lost Cargo)
I don't think that's the only thing that's bothering you...
- Koch: Huh. Are you a mind reader or something?
- Koch: I did run into a bit of trouble... I ordered a batch of metal materials that was to be transported here overland...
- Koch: But the merchants transporting the materials were taken by some unknown monsters in the wilderness, and no one knows where the shipment is now.
- Koch: *sigh* I'd paid for this order out of my own pocket as I wanted to try making some new parts, so I can't possibly ask the other knights to go through the trouble of tracking it down for me.
- Koch: I guess I'll just have to see if I can take some time off to go look for it myself...
You have my support — take your time to figure things out!
- Koch: Um, my apologies! I guess I got a little carried away with my complaining.

Final Long-Range Sightlines
Dialogue Set #1
Available after completing Sightlines and Camera Tricks, but before completing Flower, Feathers, and Bullets.
- Koch: Honorary Knight! Koch the gunsmith greets you. May your range estimates be precise, and your ballistics ideal.
And you are...
- Koch: I'm a member of the Support Company, normally stationed at Dornman Port. This time I've been sent over to maintain the equipment used in the wargame.
- Koch: Before muskets were issued in bulk, I worked quite a bit with the Cavalry Company's bow and crossbow shooters in addition to the Ranged Company — so you could call me an old friend of Horken and Hedwig...
- Koch: And this time, the moment word came down about the joint wargame, Hedwig went and named me directly to lead the gunsmith team.
- Koch: Suits me just fine — gives me a chance to really get a feel for the new Fontainian muskets!
About the other workings of the "observation grenade"...
- Koch: Let me guess — you're going to ask: How does it change direction?
- Koch: Ha! The principle isn't actually that complicated. The grenade body uses a low-energy smokeless powder, so its speed isn't anything dramatic.
- Koch: Pair that with the adhesive devices around the observation mechanism, and on impact it sticks to the target — then the side-mounted tracer at the rear ignites, sending out a hit-confirmation signal.
- Koch: The remaining space in the warhead is packed with directional charges. Once it's been remotely guided to point at the next target, igniting those propellants sends it flying onward.
- Koch: And so, in a wargame, the "observation grenade" can perform a limited number of redirections.
- Koch: Which fits the wargame's theme perfectly — "with a finite number of shots, achieve the most flawless trajectory."
I'll come back to chat with you in a bit.
- Koch: Understood. I'm here on standby anytime.
Dialogue Set #2
Available after completing Flower, Feathers, and Bullets.
- Koch: Almost done for the day... fancy a couple of drinks at The Rusty Rudder over there?
- Hedwig: Drinks!? You'd be paying out of your own pocket, then? I'm not approving a single Mora for it.
- Koch: All good — we'll cover it ourselves, and bring a few good bottles back for Horken, Ursula, and Gunther! Oh, and Captain Kaeya and the Grand Master too!
- Hedwig: Count me out, regardless. I've got to organize the records from this wargame properly, and the Ranged Company has to leave someone behind to help me!
- Hedwig: And there's the Special Patrol's written documentation for the Grand Master, the study-exchange plan... we've gone and made another fine start to something without even meaning to!
