Dialogue
Even if you had an army of ten thousand men, in the end, you must face this fight alone...
Step forward... lonely warrior.
Step forward... lonely warrior.
- (Continues from previous quest)
-
- (Varka wakes up in an unfamiliar place)
- Varka: Ugh...
- Varka: ...The sword is unbroken? But I can't sense the Wolf Spirit...
- Varka: (...Looks like I'm no longer in reality. This must be a space built from the entangled consciousnesses of Boreas and Roland.)
- Varka: There's no way back, and all that lies ahead is the wolf's maw... Hmm...
- Varka: Hah, guess the only way is through.
- (Approach the sword)
- Varka: A Favonius Sword? Who left this here?
- (Interact with the sword)
- Rostam: Lonely warrior... take me... to see him...
- The blade brings the blessing of the gentle wind, filling you with life and elemental energy...
- (Varka gains the blessing "Rostam's Longing")
- (Approach the corrupted claymore)
- "Roland": ...No matter the epoch, the world is awash with corruption and injustice.
- "Roland": I have aided the oppressed and righted many wrongs.
- "Roland": I have slain sinners and delinquents, I have slaughtered tyrants and demons.
- (As the voice speaks, phantom wolves gather around the claymore)
- "Roland": But however mighty one's blade, before the great injustice of fate, a mere mortal can but bow their head.
- (The phantom wolves disappear)
- "Roland": There is only one way to save them...
- Varka: Who are you really trying to convince?
- (After defeating the enemies)
-
- The longing within the blade seems capable of cleansing the filth
- Use the special skill to dispel the filth from the blade
- (Cleanse the claymore)
- Varka: Is this... the Ferrous Shadow? It doesn't look like an imitation...
- (Interact with the claymore)
- Ravenwood: The title of Boreas... must find an heir.
- (Varka gains the blessing "Ravenwood's Longing")
- The blade brings the blessing of the swift wind, filling you with surging elemental energy and the spirit to battle on...
- (Cross the bridge)
- Varka: (The scent that reeks of blood appears to be getting stronger...)
- (Approach the wide gap)
- Varka: Hmm... Looks like I can just jump right over these obstacles...
- Hold Elemental Skill to pass the obstacle
- (Approach the corrupted claymore)
- "Roland": ...No matter the epoch, the world is awash with corruption and injustice.
- "Roland": Even the most fearless hero cannot fight the death that fate has ordained.[Note 1]
- "Roland": And even the holiest god cannot escape the love that binds them.[Note 2]
- "Roland": Lupus Boreas, if you still harbor love for humanity, then you must surely know...
- "Roland": There has only ever been one way to save them from injustice.
- Andrius: ...Surrender to... the Abyss...
- Varka: Malicious lies!
- (After defeating the enemies)
-
- Use the special skill to dispel the filth from the blade
- (Cleanse the claymore)
- Varka: Heh... My old friend.
- (Interact with the claymore)
- Wandering Knight: This is not where your path ends. You must continue on.
- (Varka gains the blessing "Wandering Knight's Longing," then is transported into a windy corridor)
- (Approach the incoming wind)
- Varka: ...This wind feels less than welcoming. I'd better take shelter.
- (While the winds in the corridor alternate)
-
- The wind is getting weaker. Move forward with speed!
- The wind is strong. Look for cover!
- (After reaching the end of the corridor)
-
- (The wind picks up again, and the obstructions in the corridor are destroyed)
- (Varka is pushed backwards by the unrelenting gale)
- Varka: Ugh...! I can't hide from it...!
- (Rostam's Longing manifests as a shield around Varka)
- Rostam: ...You must deliver it...
- (Continue down the corridor)
-
- (Rostam's shield eventually shatters, Ravenwood summons a shield in its place)
- Ravenwood: ...Your path cannot end here...
- (Continue down the corridor)
-
- (When Ravenwood's shield eventually shatters, the Wandering Knight summons a final shield)
- Wandering Knight: ...You draw near to the heart of the wolf.
- (After clearing the wind)
- "Roland": ...Even if you had an army of ten thousand men, in the end, you must face this fight alone...
- "Roland": Lonely warrior... step forward.
- (Approach the arena)
- Varka: Is this... the heart of the wolf?
- (A matrix of pillars rises out of the ground, and a figure walks out from between them)
- Varka: ...! Roland!
- (After the dialogue)
- "Roland": ...After countless bloody battles, trials, tribulations, and hardships... I, with my mortal flesh and blade, attained power to rival that of the gods...
- "Roland": But you know better than I that a mortal's prime is fleeting. In five years, maybe ten, age will snatch your strength.
- "Roland": The power you take such pride in will fade to naught, disappearing like dust in the wind. Your fame will be as fleeting as firewood beneath the starry sky... lit at dusk, dead by dawn. Utterly insignificant.
- Varka: Oh yeah? Be that as it may... the fires that burn down here blaze more brilliantly than the light of a thousand stars.
- (After a certain amount of time)
- "Roland": They blaze for but a moment. A hundred years from now, your earthly flame will be long snuffed out, and those you once illuminated will be left cowering in the cold and empty night.
- Varka: Hah! No, they'll remember me in a hundred years... just as I remember all of you from centuries ago.
- Varka: That's the thing about firewood... From the embers of a dying flame, a new fire arises, burning bigger and brighter than ever before!
- (After a certain amount of time)
- "Roland": A knight's duty is to save others, not demand things from them. How can one call themselves a knight while placing their hopes in generations to come?
- Varka: Hmph! Well, as long as I put an end to you here and now, I won't need to rely on anyone else. Now, show yourself, Roland!
- "Roland": Put an end to me? Your body and mind are already at the limit of what they can bear. It is only a matter of time before they yield and crumble. But, if this is your final request...
- (Approach the center of the arena)
-
- (The pillars withdraw into the ground)
- "Roland": ...I shall do as you wish, Knight of Boreas.
- Varka: Huh... You're not quite how I imagined you. You don't seem half as crazed as the memories contained in the Wolf Spirit.
- "Roland": Not once have I strayed from the righteous path. But when I look at you... I do not see a hero capable of slaying dragons. Just a lost soul who has wandered far too long. A shadow of the knight you once were.
- Varka: I guess we have that much in common. Neither of us is at our peak.
- "Roland": The Rächer of Solnari's forces have been defeated, and the Roland you see is but an imperfect image cast by the Abyss.
- "Roland": I wield the power that Roland did at his peak, but my heart and mind remain frozen in that bloodstained moment.
- "Roland": Therefore, I, in my current form, am flawed... A knight cannot bear their own stagnation.
- "Roland": After redeeming you from injustice and guiding your surrender to the Abyss, I shall rectify myself and continue to follow the knightly path.
- Varka: Hah! The world out there can bear no more of your torment. Your obsession, clearly, remains exactly as I had imagined. I suppose there's no chance to make you see the light?
- "Roland": No words can make a knight doubt his convictions, no matter how noble they may sound. Neither of us will sway the other... but you have long known this truth.
- "Roland": Otherwise, why would you pin all your hopes on Boreas's single thought?
- "Roland": But now the blade that once housed the Wolf Spirit has been shattered, and all you hold is a phantom that bears its form.
- "Roland": You no longer have the means to change the situation, and no one will come to your rescue... This place shall be your graveyard, lonely warrior.
- Varka: Eh, maybe you're partly right... But I think I might just have a shot at a rescue.
- "Roland": ...What do you mean?
- Varka: There's only one person's mind I need to change, and it isn't yours...
- Varka: Forgetting where we are? This is the heart of Andrius — God of the North Wind.
- (Varka gestures to the wolf mural at the far side of the arena, its eyes glowing with purple light)
- Andrius: ...
- Varka: Andrius! Can you hear me?
- Varka: Wake up! You are the great God of the North Wind! How long will you allow yourself to suffer the domination of the Abyss?
- Andrius: ...
- "Roland": ...If this is your final gambit, I am most disappointed, Knight of Boreas.
- "Roland": Grand displays of heartfelt wishes cannot summon miracles. This world shows no such mercy to its inhabitants.
- Andrius: ...Return...
- Andrius: ...Return to... the Ley Lines...
- "Roland": ...!
- Andrius: ...This is my choice... my memory...
- Andrius: ...Is this the answer that I found... at my journey's end?
- Varka: Andrius... At long last, I have delivered your token back into your heart.
- Andrius: Heh... A Knight of Boreas? Watch on...
- Andrius: ...This is all that a wolf can hope to do for humankind...
- (The mural's eyes fade from purple to blue)
- Varka: ...On behalf of all humanity, I thank you, Lord of Wolves.
- "Roland": Boreas... is returning to the Ley Lines? But why? Your sword is broken — you no longer have the means to bear his soul... Unless... Surely not...
- Varka: Begging for miracles is a futile endeavor. I know better than that.
- Varka: ...But a sword is just one kind of vessel. There are other ways to store a soul.
- (Varka places his fist over his heart, revealing a blue glow)
- Venti: The Dominator of Wolves once bestowed the power of his soul upon his pack, strengthening their hearts and sharpening their claws and fangs.
- Boreas: ...Even if it is not my intention, the soul of Lupus Boreas will inevitably ravage, devour, and assimilate a mortal heart... As if human and wolf were being forcefully merged into one being.
- "The Captain": ...If a mortal heart is to bear the soul of a god... This is a path that cannot be retraced. Yet I shall not dissuade a knight from embarking on the quest of his own choosing.
- "Roland": Your heart, your soul... they are collapsing? ...Ah, now I see.
- Varka: You were wondering how a lamb could tame the heart of a wolf... isn't that right?
- Varka: Here's my answer: You get the wolf to swallow the heart.
- "Roland": The Wolf Spirit within the sword was merely a decoy... the true thoughts and memories were carried within your heart.
- "Roland": To avoid arousing my suspicion, you deliberately allowed Lupus Boreas's soul to assimilate your own, then be devoured by me... But... how did you have the strength to fight while bearing such a great burden...?
- Varka: Compared to Lupus Boreas's decision... my sacrifice is nothing.
- "Roland": You have a stubborn will and employed an exceptional strategy... but this is not the way a true knight fights. The choice you have made is a flawed one.
- "Roland": Your soul is now merged with that of Andrius. When he fully joins the Ley Lines, you too will fall.
- "Roland": Neither Barbatos nor the Traveler will be able to anchor your soul from within the Ley Lines, let alone rescue you.
- "Roland": You have lost, and so have I. Regrettably, I can no longer offer you salvation.
- "Roland": ...May your soul rest in peace with Boreas, lonely warrior.
- Varka: ...Haha, lonely...?
- Varka: Sorry to disappoint you, but... As much as it sounded like the perfect ending, for both of us to return to the Ley Lines together...
- Varka: The fact is that — unlike the true Roland of the past — I still have fine wine and good friends to get back to. They're looking forward to my triumphant return...
- Varka: So I'm not ready to accept my fate just yet!
- Venti: Ding-dong! You've got mail!
- (A cinematic plays)
- Cutscene's Travel Log summary:
- (A stream of letters descend into the arena and various memories replay)
- (Varka bids Jean farewell as he and his crew embark on their expedition)
- Varka: ...Until I return, I leave them in your care
- (Varka reaffirms his invitation to Diluc)
- Varka: ...The Knights of Favonius will always welcome you
- (Varka extends a hand to Razor on a rainy night)
- Varka: ...Come on, to Mondstadt!
- (Varka's friends and family each write a letter for him)
- Jean: Dear Grand Master...
- Kaeya: To Varka...
- Diluc: To Varka...
- Rosaria: Family
- Razor: Lu-pi-cal
- (The letters for Varka begin to pile up)
- (Venti talks to the Traveler as they ride on Dvalin's back with the letters)
- Venti: ...Poetry and letters
- Venti: Were humanity's earliest means of expressing their thoughts
- Venti: Make sure they all get delivered
- Venti: Outlander Who Caught the Wind!
- (The Traveler clutches the letters to their chest)
- Amber: Grand Master!
- Noelle: Grand Master...
- Mika: Grand Master...
- Sucrose: Grand Master...
- Lohen: Master!
- Eula: Varka!
- Lisa: Varka...
- Klee: Uncle Varka!
- Paimon: Hey, Sir Writes-A-Lot!
- Traveler: For Varka...
- (Everyone's wishes reach Varka in the Ley Lines, coalescing into a thread guiding him back to the real world)
- "Roland": The thoughts of others anchor you, reversing the assimilation...
- "Roland": Using your connections, relying on outside help...
- "Roland": This is not the way of a knight
- "Roland": The Abyss can sustain me no longer
- "Roland": But now
- (Numerous portals open before him, and a horde of Abyssal monsters steps through)
- "Roland": Countless souls who died unjustly will emerge
- "Roland": To prevent your return
- "Roland": If you believe in your path
- "Roland": Then grant them release
- "Roland": Carve your way out through bloodshed...
- "Roland": Varka, Mightiest Knight of Boreas
- (Varka draws his weapons and prepares for battle)
- Varka: This is how it ends... Throw the plan outta the window
- Varka: Fight my way to victory...
- Varka: Hah
- Varka: Well... That suits me just fine!
- (Cinematic ends)
- (While fighting the enemies)
- Jean: A knight is always true to their word — so please, keep your promise and return victorious!
- Diluc: "You are not alone"... Heh, right back at you, Varka.
- (The player gains Jean's Longing, (Traveler)'s Longing (Pyro), and Diluc's Longing)
- (If Varka reaches 0 HP)
-
- (Varka is revived at full HP)
- Varka: I can't fall here...! Aaaargh!
- An unyielding fighting spirit keeps Varka standing tall!
- (After defeating the enemies)
- Andrius: The North Wind blows southward... May it guide you on your journey home.
- (While crossing the crumbling corridor)
- Noelle: Leave it all to me!
- (The player gains access to Noelle's Elemental Skill)
- (Approach the Wolf's Gravestone)
- Kaeya: Heh, there's an ice-cold drink with your name on it, ready when you are!
- Rosaria: Don't go dying in a place like this, Varka.
- (The player gains (Traveler)'s Longing (Anemo), Kaeya's Longing, and Rosaria's Longing)
- (Approach the Anemo Rings)
- Amber: Fly home to us, Grand Master!
- (Approach the Favonius Sword)
- Venti: "...Spread your wings and soar toward a new dawn."[Note 3]
- Razor: Fate's... chosen lupical!
- (The player gains Venti's Longing, (Traveler)'s Longing (Electro), and Razor's Longing)
- (Approach the giant wolf's maw)
- Varka: ...One final battle!
- Varka: HRAAAAH!
- (Varka swings his claymores in a sweeping arc, clearing the remaining enemies)
- (After the transition)
-
- (Varka trudges through an empty expanse, dragging his sword in exhaustion)
- Varka: ...
- Varka: ...
- Andrius: ...Walk forward, and do not look back.
- Varka: ...
- (Various people appear along his path as Varka continues onward)
- Razor: "Varka... Now, I know the meaning of my name."
- Rosaria: "...After the lengths you've made everyone go for you, you'd better make sure to thank us all properly when you get back."
- Kaeya: "You know, I have a lot of things to update you on... but they can wait until you're back."
- Diluc: "I have no intention of returning to the Knights of Favonius... But I trust you will find a way to manage on your own."
- Varka: ...
- (Jean and a few Knights appear and salute him)
- Jean: "...Grand Master, we're all waiting for you."
- Varka: ...
- (Varka returns the salute, then watches a green leaf gently blow by him in the wind, drawing his eyes to another sight.)
- Varka: Hmm? ...Oh. Heh.
- (Varka approaches a small graveyard of swords, the known symbols of the Wandering Knight, Ravenwood, Vennessa, Arundolyn, and Rostam. He stops and crouches in front of them)
- Varka: I'm... not doing too bad a job as Grand Master, am I?
- Varka: Heh... I'll take that silence as your approval.
- (Taking out his flask, Varka toasts the swords and drinks deeply, then pours out the rest for the blades, before capping his flask again)
- Varka: Everything you swore to protect with your lives... It's all still here, safe and sound.
- Varka: The Knights of Favonius, Mondstadt... and the oath sworn by every knight. I'll protect them all with my life.
- (Varka stands, picks up his claymore once more and hefts it onto his shoulder)
- Varka: And so... I'll deliver that letter on your behalf.
- (Varka walks a bit further, then stops in front of the lone Black Sword)
- (He places Rostam's letter to Roland at the sword's base and walks on a few steps before stopping to address the sword.)
- Varka: ...I know it's just a shadow of the real Roland, but... if you have the time, could you please read it for him?
- Varka: Rostam and Arundolyn... They never forgot you.
- (As Varka turns away, the sword glows faintly with the power of Anemo)
- Varka: Phew... This has been one long expedition.
- Varka: ...
- (Varka thrusts his claymore into the ground, sits down to lean against it and closes his eyes)
- Varka: From here on out, I think I'll...
- Varka: ...Let the wind lead.
- (When Varka opens his eyes again, he is at Windrise, and his fellow knights are gathered before him)
- Knights: ...!
- Varka: ...Hey, everyone. It's been a mighty long time.
- Varka: I'm... thrilled to see you all again.
- (The Traveler steps forward from the rear of the crowd and offers Varka his claymore back)
- (Traveler): Welcome back, Grand Master.
- Varka: Yeah. I'm home.
Poems are vessels for emotions, letters are couriers of longing.
Those who tread solitary paths are seldom followed by loneliness.
Those who tread solitary paths are seldom followed by loneliness.
- (Talk to Varka)
- Varka: Ahhh... It's been a while since I felt this wind on my face... Just how I remember. So, is there anything you'd like to talk about? Now's your chance, before I get dragged off to the office...
About your plan...
- Varka: The sword was just a decoy — I carried his soul in my own heart... That was the plan I was most certain would work.
- Varka: The second half, though — using everyone's thoughts to guide me back out of the Ley Lines... I wasn't too sure that would work out, hah.
- Paimon: All jokes aside, what would you have done if (Traveler) hadn't been able to separate the Wolf Spirit from Roland's influence?
- Varka: Hmm... Initially, I was planning to have Barbatos carry out that step. But when I approached him about it, he said there was a much more suitable candidate... The Outlander Who Caught the Wind.
- Varka: Turns out our trust was not misplaced. Thank you, (Traveler).
But what if I'd failed?- Varka: Then... I guess we'd have had to get Barbatos to send a wind to blow me back home?
- Varka: ...But it would have come at a heavy price, and with no guarantee of success. Besides, I'd rather not have him expend that kind of power.
...Invoking the power of an Archon...
...How steep a price are we talking?- Varka: Hmm, it's a good question — a glass of the finest Dandelion Wine, perhaps? No doubt I'd have to pay for it with the secret stash of cash in my office.
- Paimon: You're dreaming if you think it would've come that cheap!
- (Dialogue returns to option selection)
About the expedition...
- Varka: Well, with the shadow of Roland vanquished, the Wild Hunt won't be able to consolidate their forces for the foreseeable future.
- Varka: A few knights will remain on rotation at the Nod-Krai stronghold, but everyone else will be sent home in waves.
- Varka: Albedo and Durin will come back with the first wave, so you should have the chance to see them again soon.
- (Dialogue returns to option selection)
About your future...
- Varka: My future, huh... You may already have learned of this from Barbatos or the Hexenzirkel, but I glimpsed a reflection of the future in Barbeloth's scryglass.
You saw an Abyssal calamity in the North, right?- Varka: Correct. Although, as things stand now... I believe we may have changed the course of the future — thanks in no small part to you.
- Varka: Still, after I've tied up some loose ends with the Knights of Favonius, I'll need to make another trip back north... There's still a lot of work to be done at the Nod-Krai stronghold.
- Varka: Besides, the first group of knights who volunteered to stay there have yet to be relieved of their duty. How could I simply abandon them?
- Paimon: Aw, how noble... But be honest, your main reason for going back to Nod-Krai is so you can dump all your work here on Jean again, isn't it?
- Varka: ...
- Paimon: ...Wait, seriously!?
Aren't you gonna say something in your defense...?
Don't just stand there grinning!- Varka: Haha. I'm only pulling your leg — you'll be seeing a lot more of me in Mondstadt from now on.
- (Dialogue returns to option selection)
I have no more questions.
- Varka: Alright then. I'm gonna stay here and enjoy the breeze for a little longer... For all the wine in the world, there's no feeling as intoxicating as the wind from your hometown after a long time away.
