The Sea of Data is a subordinate body from the Sea of Quanta[1] supported by Honkai Energy.[2] Its quantum space[3] surrounds the fourth planet from the sun of the Solar System, Mars.[4] The Sea of Data is said to hold endless treasures that can be obtained via Source Matter.[5]

Description

On the 33rd day of the 14th month of the year 2185 on Mars' Old Calendar, the Sea of Data was exposed to Mars. The Sea of Data eroded everything it came into contact with[6] before it eventually turned into a resource that helped some civilizations recover after the Great Eruption.[7] Currently, the Data Research Institute speculates that Source Matter and the Sea of Data only exist due to the Great Eruption.[8] In Part 2 Chapter X, it's revealed that the Sea of Data is instead the warped space around Mars that came from the planet's unbalanced structure—where it was still anchored to the Imaginary Tree, but the Tree's influence was overpowered by the Sea of Quanta, creating a constant tug-of-war situation that warped the space.[9]

The flow of time in the Sea of Data is greatly different from the flow of time outside of it.[10][11] With this, there are also spaces in it that appear to be unrelated to Mars' history.[12] The Sea of Data does not have any specific areas by itself yet but instead acts as a "bubble" in which other entities enter. For example, Oxia and Langqiu are rooted in the Sea of Data, but only after the Great Eruption.[7] Other cities of Mars from before the Great Eruption, like Minghai and Baiyu, however, did not root themselves into the Sea of Data.[6]

Monsters from the Sea of Data are created similarly to Quantum Beasts from the Sea of Quanta. However, because of the difference in Honkai Energy on Earth versus Mars, the monsters end up varying in types and characteristics that Honkai Beasts haven't.[13]

Source Matter

The concept of Source Matter is derived from the Sea of Data. It's a substance full of data that can be changed into tangible material. As such, it essentially runs the daily lives of those in Oxia, with even their natural gas and food[14] being refined from it.[8]

The substance, by itself, is shapeless and unstable, requiring purification devices and concentration. Additionally, it can't be stored long-term without being transformed into "specific conventional substances," as that's the only way for it to gain stability. Sometimes, however, Source Matter can be influenced by the Sea of Data alone and will change into more complex materials as such. These changes can include complete data fragments, particular objects, and humans.[8]

Source Matter is usually collected in spatial zones where it's amassed in the Sea of Data. There, it's extracted with in situ leaching. For other spaces, it's extracted with magnetic filtration that separates it from the ether in the Sea of Data.[8]

Humans

It is revealed in Part 2 Chapter X that people aren't truly "born" in the Sea of Data. Rather, those who were "born" from the Sea of Data were individuals who were pulled out of it by the Data Research Institute after falling into its rifts in earlier times, such as Luo Chenxue.[15] Everyone who was found in the Sea of Data had to be placed in a stasis pod for observation for 90 days[16] afterwards to confirm whether they were capable of living a normal life—with there occasionally being individuals who couldn't leave due to prolonged periods of sleep.[17] Those who do wake up experience memory loss, having no recollection of their previous life.[18]
