The Ten Faces of Misery refers to the ten distinct manifestations of psychological fear and origins of shadow calamities on Mars.[1][2]

Description

The Ten Faces of Misery is a term that was originally coined by the leader of the Seven Shus, Baiji. He was the one to figure out the origins of various shadow calamities and classify them.[2] There are seven ways to subdue the Ten Faces of Misery, of which each Shu in the Seven Shus represents.[3] One can only become a Shu by defeating all Ten Faces of Misery.[1][note 1][4] Not all of the ten types of manifestations are mentioned, and nor are the seven ways to subdue them. The Ten Faces of Misery stems from humanities' fears, originally having wreaked havoc on the world, except for those who had conquered their own fears and already delved into the shadows and harnessed their powers.[1]

A hundred years ago, Baiji, alongside Ajita, tried to contain the Ten Faces of Misery within a Zodiac Astral Ring to end the shadow calamities.[5] However, his attempt triggered a surge of energy from the shadows, resulting in the Astral Ring shattering into seven pieces. The power of the Astral Ring remained within the shards, which Baiji created counterfeits to contain. He intended to distribute the fragments to select gifted people as a strategy to turn the tide against the shadow calamities.[6][7] The Ten Faces of Misery were then banished by the Seven Shus.[8]

Monsters that emerge from people's shadows once sensing fear are one of the manifestations of the Ten Faces of Misery.[9]

Amber Street Great Panic

The Amber Street Great Panic was a calamity that occurred a hundred years ago, before the Great Eruption. It was one of the manifestations of the Ten Faces of Misery, though it as only categorized as such after the disaster. The calamity was initially unprecedented and irresolvable,[10] making it impossible to eliminate until one of the Seven Shus, Litost, stepped in. Since the people's fear of Amber Street didn't have an actual source, the shadows only kept coming back. Litost resolved the near unstoppable calamity by slaughtering every citizen on Amber Street, ridding it of the shadows. Afterwards, Litost used himself to describe the source of the calamity and to withhold blame for it. By doing such, the remaining fear was directed towards Litost, thus preventing the Great Panic from recurring.[11]

Duonigue

After the events of Part 2 Chapter I, Duonigue is catagorized as one of the manifestations of the Ten Faces of Misery.[12]
