Shu of Falsehood[2]

Baiji is the leader[14] and founder of the Seven Shus.[15] As a part of the Seven Shus, he is titled the Shu of Falsehood.[2] Baiji is the strongest out of the Seven Shus.[16]

Appearance

Baiji is a tall, slim man with long,[17] dark brown hair featuring green highlights. His appearance is typically sickly[18] and frail.[19] He wears a flowy, green and white outfit with gold accents. His sleeves cut off before his forearms, which are covered in white and gold cloth.

Story

Baiji was raised with a noble background,[20] but he suffered from poor health throughout his childhood.[21][5] A hundred years ago, Baiji, alongside Ajita, tried to contain the Ten Faces of Misery within a Zodiac Astral Ring to end the shadow calamities.[22] However, his attempt triggered a surge of energy from the shadows, resulting in the Astral Ring shattering into seven pieces. The power of the Astral Ring remained within the shards, which Baiji created counterfeits to contain. He intended to distribute the fragments to select gifted people as a strategy to turn the tide against the shadow calamities.[23][24]

Personality

Baiji is calm, friendly, and strategic,[25] though his actions can be forceful.[26] Despite his title, Baiji is said to have never lied to anyone.[2] In Part 2 Chapter V, Litost reveals that Baiji had been searching for ways to extend his mother's and sister's lives, to which Baiji says that he wants to make the most out of his remaining time, as to not leave regrets.[5]

Baiji: The doctors said I wouldn't make it to adulthood, but I did. I even managed to ease my sister's burden. What's there to feel bitter about?
Litost: You inherited this illness from your mother. It kept you from running freely and forced you to take medication since childhood.
Baiji: At least I can still go outside. Ling's illness struck earlier and was much worse. Before our mother passed away, she worried about Ling the most.
Litost: Over the years, you've searched for ways to prolong people's lives; first for your mother, then for your sister. But did you ever think about yourself?
Baiji: Although I'm technically the young master of the Bai family, no one expects much from a frail heir who could drop dead at any moment.
Baiji: My only option is to make the most of the time I have left and have no regrets.

Baiji: Among the Seven Shus, only she is capable of completely discarding her mortal husk.
Baiji: Let's leave it aside for now. Whatever the case, we, the Seven Shus, have lost our most insightful member; that much remains true.

Baiji: These old afflictions are hardly worthy of your attention. Pardon my manners. I shouldn't have greeted you in such a frail state, but time takes its toll. I still need to correct a mistake I made a hundred years ago.
  20. Part 2 Chapter I, Barely a Box Left
Songque: Of course, this is my Master's treasure. With his noble background, there's nothing luxurious and valuable he hasn't seen; but, he cherished this thing like crazy.
  21. Part 2 Chapter V, Unexpected
Baiji: I've been frail and sickly since childhood. Even now, it's only with the power of the Shu that I manage to maintain the semblance of a healthy body.
  22. Part 2 Chapter III, Enlighted By Lies
Baiji: It all began a hundred years ago, when under Ajita's exhortations, I attempted to contain the Ten Faces of Misery within a special Astral Ring in hopes of putting an end to the shadow calamities.
Senadina: Can the Astral Ring really do that?
Baiji: Ajita called it the Zodiac Astral Ring. It is said to play a special role in the so-called "specialization."
    [...]
Baiji: When I attempted to integrate and capture the Ten Faces of Misery, a tremendous surge of energy erupted from the shadows and shattered the Astral Ring into seven pieces. The counterfeits we possess that resemble the Astral Ring are products of that incident.
  23. Part 2 Chapter III, Only Shadows Shall Remain
Ajita: So, what happened to the Zodiac Astral Ring?
    [...]
Baiji: ... It couldn't bear the pressure and split into several fragments.
Ajita: Oh my... I suppose it's only theoretically feasible to integrate the shadow's authorities in a singular point.
Baiji: But one thing happened just as you predicted.
Baiji: The Astral Ring isn't just a mundane gadget. Even though it split apart, its power is still there. I'm currently using a counterfeit to store that power.
  24. Part 2 Chapter III, Only Shadows Shall Remain
Baiji: Next, I plan to hand over the fragments of the Zodiac Astral Ring to the right people. The biological affinity of this instrument might give us an opportunity to turn the tables.
Ajita: Oh, I remember working on this contingency plan together. I don't think we can do anything about the Law... But regarding the Shus, do you have any candidates in mind?
    Baiji nodded.
Baiji: I hope they can utilize their exceptional talents to discover or devise some methods to suppress the shadow calamities...
  25. Part 2 Chapter III, Fireworks of the Present and the Past
So, in the end, he returned to being the calm and decisive strategist, placing the weight of reason back on the scales.
    Baiji: ... Aren't you afraid?
  26. Part 2 Chapter III, Ten Joys of the Street
Coralie: We don't necessarily have to follow the words of someone we just met—even if that person is Songque's master.
Helia: True. He's friendly enough, but his actions are extremely forceful, and he's left us with very little choice.
