Seven Shus

Last updated 2026-08-31

Here lies the blueprint of the malefactors, the Shus' command, divine scribes.
Witnessed by stars, their names resound:
[...]
By the ecliptic's decree, we are bound—
We are both the damned prisoners of apocalypse and the creators of genesis; We wield the shadows, yet are but dust of despair.
Shadows rise, shadows fall; The Venerable Seven Shus, in Law unite all.

The Seven Shus, also known as the Venerable Seven Shus[1] are a group of seven people on Mars who had been granted the title of a "Shu" due to their special capabilities, which are meant to represent the seven ways to subdue the Ten Faces of Misery.[2]

Overview

The Seven Shus were originally founded by Baiji[3]—their leader[4]—with the idea occurring via an accident. A hundred years ago, Baiji, alongside Ajita, tried to contain the Ten Faces of Misery within a Zodiac Astral Ring to end the shadow calamities.[5] However, his attempt triggered a surge of energy from the shadows, resulting in the Astral Ring shattering into seven pieces. The power of the Astral Ring remained within the shards, which Baiji created counterfeits to contain. He intended to distribute the fragments to select gifted people as a strategy to turn the tide against the shadow calamities.[6][7] Baiji's specific qualifications were to only gift the title of "Shu" to those who could handle all Ten Faces of Misery,[8] with "Lantern" as the sole exception.[9]

While conversing with Ajita after the incident, Baiji presented her with the second Astral Ring and the title of Shu of Gadgets, which she accepted, making her the second member to join.[10] All other members of the Seven Shus joined in an unknown order.

Once all members of the Seven Shus were together, they rounded up the Curse of Shadows and isolated them in Langqiu; splitting Oxia and Langqiu apart in the process, allowing the former of the two to be rebuilt in a brand new Bubble Universe, unaffected by the Great Eruption.[11] Before his death on the day of Langqiu and Oxia's separation,[12] Litost absorbed all the fear he could contain within himself, establishing the Ten Faces of Misery and imprisoning the shadows.[13] Following his death, the Seven Posts of Transfixing Shadows (Seven Nails)[14] were created to prevent the Sea of Data's corruption,[15] with all but Songque and Perception falling into a deep slumber due to exhaustion afterwards.[16]

  2. The Seven Shus & One Law - Dusty Old Volume
It is widely known that the true meaning of the Seven Shus lies in the seven methods to subdue the Ten Faces of Misery. However, some of you may have heard that, initially, they were referred to more as the "The Seven Shus & One Law."
  3. Part 2 Chapter II, Seven Phases of Shu
Perception: Songque's master is the foundation of the Seven Shus. If the other six Shus don't fully awaken, he won't be able to escape from the cage in the sky.
  4. Part 2 Chapter III, A Fool's Path
Suddenly, Baiji recalled his childhood and how the seniors in his family spoke about him.
    [...]
The leader of the Seven Shus who tried to resume the reality of the world with Falsehood, ended up being trapped in the prison forged by the Falsehood.
  5. Part 2 Chapter III, Enlighted By Lies
Baiji: It all began a hundred years ago, when under Ajita's exhortations, I attempted to contain the Ten Faces of Misery within a special Astral Ring in hopes of putting an end to the shadow calamities.
Senadina: Can the Astral Ring really do that?
Baiji: Ajita called it the Zodiac Astral Ring. It is said to play a special role in the so-called "specialization."
    [...]
Baiji: When I attempted to integrate and capture the Ten Faces of Misery, a tremendous surge of energy erupted from the shadows and shattered the Astral Ring into seven pieces. The counterfeits we possess that resemble the Astral Ring are products of that incident.
  6. Part 2 Chapter III, Only Shadows Shall Remain
Ajita: So, what happened to the Zodiac Astral Ring?
    [...]
Baiji: ... It couldn't bear the pressure and split into several fragments.
Ajita: Oh my... I suppose it's only theoretically feasible to integrate the shadow's authorities in a singular point.
Baiji: But one thing happened just as you predicted.
Baiji: The Astral Ring isn't just a mundane gadget. Even though it split apart, its power is still there. I'm currently using a counterfeit to store that power.
  7. Part 2 Chapter III, Only Shadows Shall Remain
Baiji: Next, I plan to hand over the fragments of the Zodiac Astral Ring to the right people. The biological affinity of this instrument might give us an opportunity to turn the tables.
Ajita: Oh, I remember working on this contingency plan together. I don't think we can do anything about the Law... But regarding the Shus, do you have any candidates in mind?
    Baiji nodded.
Baiji: I hope they can utilize their exceptional talents to discover or devise some methods to suppress the shadow calamities...
  8. Part 2 Chapter I, Old Scroll
Songque: Hence, my Master set a rule... you can only be recognized as a Shu if you can handle all Ten Faces of Misery!
  9. Part 2 Chapter II, Starless Journey
Chenxue: Perhaps because the "Lantern" organization was once too large, the records about you, among all the Shus, are the clearest.
Chenxue: "Acquired power comparable to that of a Shu through mortal means, without having subdued the Ten Faces of Misery." — I never imagined it would be possible.
  10. Part 2 Chapter III, Only Shadows Shall Remain
    Baiji: Wait a moment.
Baiji approached Ajita and put a small object in her palm. The living thing in the shadows didn't quite catch what it was.
    Ajita: Oh, really?
Ajita: Does this mean I'm also one of the candidates?
Baiji: Sure. There's no one more suited than you to bear the name "Gadgets".
Ajita: Alright, then. I'll take it.
  11. Part 2 Chapter I, Emergency Response
Coralie: The first is about the world itself. Langqiu and Oxia were originally in the same world, split into two by the Shus, a little over a hundred years ago...
Coralie: Or, to be more precise, by the Shus with Songque as the lead, thereby isolating the Curse in the Shadows in Langqiu, while allowing Oxia to be rebuilt in a brand new bubble universe, unaffected by the Great Eruption.
  12. Part 2 Chapter I, Street of Stories
Songque: Unlike other Shus, Litost has been dead for over a century, which is since the day Langqiu was separated from Oxia.
  13. Death's Trace
"After today, when this world splits in two, Litost will absorb all the fear he can contain within himself and die. The blood flowing within him at that moment will also turn into the pool water infused by the shadow of calamity, flowing through the lands of Langqiu."
"Through this, we can establish it as the foundation of the Ten Faces of Misery, and imprison the shadows within... or take them for ourselves."
  14. Part 2 Chapter I, Land of Shadows
Songque: Look, can you see that? Its full name is "Seven Posts of Transfixing Shadows", but don't get confused by all that. Basically, they're just a bunch of big ol' nails, and people just call them the "Seven Nails" for short.
  15. Part 2 Chapter I, Into Desolation
Coralie: The so-called Seven Nails and their functions... were they actually created by Litost's death?
Songque: Mhmm... That's pretty much correct
Songque: They aren't like real nails that pin Langqiu somewhere. Instead, using the power of the Shus, they nail the entire Pool of Shadows above Langqiu to counteract the Great Eruption and prevent the corruption of the Sea.
  16. Part 2 Chapter I, Emergency Response
Coralie: Absolutely. "Infusing the power of shadows into the nails"... Is that what you meant by "nourishment" earlier?
Perception: Exactly. After achieving such a grand feat, even a Shu would get exhausted. Five and four-fifths out of seven Shus have fallen into a deep slumber.
    Coralie: Four-fifths?
Perception: Songque counts as one, and I count as one-fifth, so naturally there are five and four-fifths out of seven.
