Ryusuke

Murata Ryusuke (Japanese: 無む量ら塔た隆りゅう介すけ),^[7] previously known as Ryusuke Pissaro,^[2] is an NPC on Planarcadia, located in Graphia Academy. He appears after Trailblaze Mission Portrait of a Middle-Aged Artist.

After completing Trailblaze Mission Non-Existent State, Ryusuke will no longer appear in Graphia Academy.

Profile

Ryusuke is the current Dean of Graphia Academy and the father of the current Astral Express Navigator, Himeko. He is a famous artist in the interastral art sphere, being popular for his realist works. Initially, his daughter is cold toward him, but during their reunion, the two gradually reconcile, and their relationship begins to warm once more.

David van Holt is Ryusuke's penname.^[1]

History

Ryusuke was born on Bathia-2, a star system renowned for its classical pastoral aesthetics. He graduated with honors from the Classical Fine Arts Department of the Bragi Royal Academy of Arts, where he later remained as an instructor for three years. During this early period of his career, he earned numerous accolades, including the prestigious "Arita Classical Art Foundation" award, and quickly established himself as a rising figure in the interastral art world. It was also during this time that he produced some of his most celebrated works, The Sand King's Cocoon, The Fall of Tuv-β, and Portrait of a Mother with a Scythe, all of which are widely regarded as the pinnacle of Bathia-2's realist tradition.

Ryusuke later arrived on Planarcadia as a visiting scholar. Fascinated by the artistic techniques of Graphia, he enrolled in the Graphia Academy to further his studies where he would also meet his late wife, Murata Roan. During his tenure, he demonstrated exceptional aptitude, mastering the fundamentals of imagenae creation in under a year. Recognizing his talent and rapid progress, the academy extended an invitation for him to remain as a faculty member upon the conclusion of his initial visit, allowing him to continue advancing his research and practice.

During his time as a faculty, Ryusuke confronted a group of gangsters in order to protect his students. This incident caught the attention of a young Polwave, who personally visited Graphia Academy to apologize on behalf of his subordinates. During this encounter, Polwave also expressed interest in commissioning a painting from Ryusuke for the Synwish Syndicate's boss. Ryusuke, however, refused outright, stating that the Syndicate was "not yet worthy." The exchange escalated into a heated yet amicable confrontation, with both men sharing laughter despite nearly coming to blows.^[8]

During this period, as an outsider, Ryusuke had a different perspective on imagenae that diverged notably from that of the local populace. His work centered on expressing the psychological condition of modern individuals living under the management of the IPC, with Planarcadia serving as his primary lens. He theorized that imagenae were not merely constructs of function, but direct reflections of the human mind and its underlying state. Among his representative works, Astral Shepherd Jellyfish stands out as a defining piece. It depicted a cluster of non-sentient, jellyfish-like imagenae drifting through the vacuum, emphasizing their existence beyond utilitarian purpose. Through this composition, Ryusuke proposed that imagenae need not be confined to roles as tools or laborers within urban systems, but could instead exist purely as expressions of beauty and harmony. The work received widespread acclaim, particularly from the Knights of Beauty.

In Silent, Ryusuke created a class of rock-cluster imagenae incapable of speech or interfacing with Synesthesia Beacons. Despite these limitations, they possessed the ability to perceive the emotions of nearby sentient beings, altering their crystalline structures and coloration in response to those feelings. Through this work, Ryusuke sought to establish a form of life parallel to humanity, one that remained entirely "uncolonized" by human language, symbolism, and conceptual frameworks. By doing so, he aimed to explore the possibility of communication through pure emotion, using these imagenae as both subjects and instruments to reflect on the constraints of verbal expression and the significance of emotional resonance. However, Silent became the subject of formal investigation for potential violations of the Faekind Protection Act, igniting widespread debate across both society and the interastral art community.^[1]

According to academic consensus, Ryusuke's artistic style underwent a marked transformation after he became acquainted with Murata Roan. In the years that followed, he embarked on an interstellar journey in search of a means to cure his wife and daughter, Murata Himeko, of the Graphia Family's "Weathering Curse."^[9] During his interstellar travels, Ryusuke sought aid from various factions, including the Elixir Seekers and the Intelligentsia Guild, in hopes of finding a cure for the Weathering Curse, though all efforts ultimately proved futile.^[9]

Before Ryusuke could return to Planarcadia, he crossed paths with the Lord Ravager, Asat Pramad. Asat destroyed Ryusuke's body and assumed his identity. He then traveled to Planarcadia and introduced himself as Ryusuke to Ryusuke's six-year-old daughter, Himeko, who was unaware of his deception, believing that her absentee father had finally returned to be with her side.^[3]
