Dialogue

Talk to Serena

(Idle text)
Serena: Breaking news! Gather around and listen up!
Serena: Nikador is staging a comeback!
(Talk to Serena)
Serena: What a great day, (mister/miss). How many breaking news alerts do you plan on listening to?
Icon Dialogue Arrow Where did you hear about these wild rumors?
Serena: Wild rumors? So long as there's one person who hasn't heard of something, it's all news!
Icon Dialogue Arrow We all use teleslates nowadays. What are you talking about newspapers for?
Serena: Who said I'm talking about a newspaper? Paper's too expensive — every line of this news is personally delivered by my mouth~
Icon Dialogue Arrow I've got plenty of news myself, too. Name your price.
Serena: Hey, don't get me wrong now — I only sell news. I'm not into recycling it.
Serena: We're having a sale to mark the grand opening. One line of news for just 5 Balance Coins. Want to hear one?
The girl looks at you with puppy dog eyes that seem to say "I'll starve if I don't sell any news stories today."
Icon Dialogue Arrow Okay.
Icon Dialogue Arrow Yes!
Icon Dialogue Arrow Alright!
Icon Dialogue Arrow Let's go!!!
Icon Dialogue Arrow Don't tell me there's no option to refuse?
That's right, could anyone ever hope to refuse that girl with those puppy dog eyes? Besides, you're so rich now that you can afford the price of ten news items.
Serena: Tee-hee, thank you so much. Well then, I'll begin...
The girl tells a series of outrageous stories, such as Nikador falling in love with Talanton and fighting Georios in a love triangle... Who knows where she got all those from.
The story lasts at least ten minutes. Perhaps the light in Okhema has been impacting your sleep, but you gradually close your eyelids...
You wake up feeling as though your body is much lighter. Can spending time with children really help you take a load off?
It takes a while before you fully understand why...
Your money pouch — you exchanged some physical Balance Coins to try to fit in with the locals — has vanished.

Interview witnesses

UI Adventure Mission Mission Description

Your money pouch has disappeared with the young girl. Someone must know where she is.
(Trailblazer): ...I have to find and interrogate that kid. Maybe someone around here saw where she ran off to?
(Talk to Aphrea, optional)
Aphrea: Hey, there! Welcome to Goldweaver tailor! What can I help you with today?
Icon Dialogue Arrow Did you see a child running this way?
Aphrea: A child? Yes, I saw her puffing hard as she sprinted upstairs. I don't know her name, but I've seen her around a lot.
Aphrea: That kid's always beavering away at something. She must've been through a lot if she's running household affairs so well. I wish there was a way I could help her...
(Talk to Kyros, optional)
Kyros: What would you like to eat? Local specialties? Or perhaps something more outlandish that has been lost to time?
Icon Dialogue Arrow Did you see a child running this way?
Kyros: A child... Oh, you must mean Serena! That girl is always stealing leftovers off the table. She makes quite an impression.
Kyros: I was going to treat her to something delicious, but she told me she'd get indigestion if she ate while lying down...
Kyros: Ahem, but that's getting off track now. Yes, I saw her running towards the city gate and being sneaky about it. I'm not sure what she was up to.
(Talk to Demetria, optional)
Demetria: Hey there, youngster. Wanna see today's fresh fruit?
Icon Dialogue Arrow Did you see a child running this way?
Demetria: Ah, that kid... Mmm, I sure did. Unfortunately, my eyesight is no longer the best, so I couldn't really make out which direction she was going in.
Demetria: I heard she came to Okhema with a bunch of outlanders, and her parents got "separated" from her along the way... And I'm speaking a euphemism, you understand.
Demetria: If you want to find her, you might as well set your sights higher. That's all I can say.
(Talk to Hygilos)
Hygilos: G'day, friend. Looking for some good stuff that floats in a whimsy? You've come to the right place.
Icon Dialogue Arrow Did you see a child running this way?
Hygilos: A child? Maybe, maybe not. My memory ain't what it used to be... But maybe a few Balance Coins will get it working again?
Icon Dialogue Arrow Pull out the baseball bat.
Hygilos: Hey hey hey, chill out! I was just kidding around, no need to bash me around with Georios' scepter.
Icon Dialogue Arrow Pull out the flaming lance.
Hygilos: Hey hey hey, chill out! I was just kidding around, no need to rough me up with Nikador's weapon.
Icon Dialogue Arrow Pull out the hat.
Hygilos: Hey hey hey, chill out! I was just kidding around, no need to use Phagousa's crown against me.
Hygilos: Ahem... I saw that kid, and I also know exactly what she's looking for all this time.
Hygilos: She's hiding up high on a platform to the right. Go take a look. That's where she stashes all her precious stuff.

Find where the girl is hiding

(Trailblazer): I hear that kid is hiding on the platform opposite. I can go around the roof to get there.
(Use Janus' Hidden Passage)
(Trailblazer): This must be her hiding place. I guess she hasn't made it back here, yet?
(Interact with Serena after activating Fragments of Recollection)
Serena: Mister, do you know where my mom and dad are? I haven't seen them since that day.
Serena: I heard you've been standing sentry at the city gates and know pretty much everyone. You must know where they went then, right?
Guard with a Soft Heart: They... have probably headed off somewhere very far away.
Serena: How far? Don't tell me they went back to our hometown without telling me? I wanna find them!
Guard with a Soft Heart: I... don't think you'll be able to. It's really dangerous out there in Okhema.
Serena: I'm not afraid of danger. I just want my mom and dad. I've been out for a walk outside the city before with the grown-ups before, so if I go out again, I'll be fine!
Guard with a Soft Heart: *sigh* ...The Icatusians are as stubborn as a pack of dromases.
Guard with a Soft Heart: You might not be afraid of anything, but you still need to get yourself ready before you head out again. You don't want to give up halfway, do you?
Serena: Get ready? What do you mean by that?
Guard with a Soft Heart: Hmm... like lots and lots of money. You'll need money to buy equipment and supplies, and you should probably hire a few dromases plus a group of attendants.
Serena: Oh... Then what?
Guard with a Soft Heart: You worry about all that stuff first. You know it's not easy earning money, right?
Serena: I—I understand. I'll do my best to save money until I've got enough to go find them...
As you watch the memory fragments intently, the sound of footsteps rings out behind you...
Serena: ...
Icon Dialogue Arrow ...Hello?
Icon Dialogue Arrow I finally got you!
Icon Dialogue Arrow The wind sure is noisy today.
Serena: ...Granddad Zagreus, I pray to you one last time: Please make my legs lightning fast!

Catch up to the running girl

(Idle text)
Serena: I have never failed to escape before!
Serena: There is no way you could catch me!
Serena: But even if I did get caught...
Serena: ...It doesn't really matter, does it?

Listen to the girl's "explanation"

UI Adventure Mission Step Description

It turns out that she was not doing this for money, but to fulfill a wish... Nothing that can be done about it now, though.
(Talk to Serena)
Serena: Ha... I—I can't move...
Icon Dialogue Arrow Is that it? I only just finished warming up.
Icon Dialogue Arrow Give me my money pouch!
Icon Dialogue Arrow Where are your parents? Do they not discipline you...?
The girl stays silent, confirming the veracity of that memory.
She throws the thing she's holding in her arms at you — your lost money pouch. Not a single penny is missing.
Serena: I found this on the ground and wanted to return it to you... Fine, I admit that I didn't want to give it back to you at first.
Serena: But that doesn't matter now. No matter how much money I can save, there's no point...
Serena: Lipos told me... Icatus has all gone! And my mom and dad...
Serena: A bard never lies. I'll never be able to go back to my hometown... and I'll never see mom and dad again...
The girl begins to sob quietly. Icatus — Just from the name [sic] the city, you guess it is a place of ill omens. That place has been wiped from the face of the earth and buried alongside its children's hopes.
The girl tilts her head to one side and looks down at the market. It's hard to tell whether she wants to join in.
Serena: So now... what can I do? What should I do?
Icon Dialogue Arrow Go turn yourself in to the guards.
(Trailblazer): Go and turn yourself in to the guards, and pay the price for your previous actions. I don't think they'll take it too hard on you.
Icon Dialogue Arrow Go read a ton of books.
(Trailblazer): Go and read a whole stack of books. You have a curious and bright mind and are handy with numbers. Learn enough so that you'll be able to feed yourself in the future.
Icon Dialogue Arrow Go learn some music theory.
(Trailblazer): Go and learn a musical instrument. You know so many rumors and tales. If you learned to play an instrument I'm sure you'd make a fantastic bard.
Icon Dialogue Arrow Go learn a craft.
(Trailblazer): Go and learn a craft such as weaving. Even if you're no good at it, you'll still be able to support yourself so long as you work hard at it.
Serena: Hmm... I understand. I'll give it a try...
The girl walks down slowly, her steps stilted, yet never quite toppling over.

Post-Mission

(If the player chose "Go turn yourself in to the guards.")
Serena: Oh it's you, (Mister/Miss)...
Serena: I've been reinventing myself, and Uncle Dorian has been looking after me. Sometimes he even makes me something to eat... It's really yum, and I don't have to go out foraging for leftovers.
Serena: When I grow up, I'm gonna be a guard...
(If the player chose "Go read a ton of books.")
Serena: Oh it's you, (Mister/Miss)! I'm learning how to read with Miss Ctesiphona.
Serena: I've got a really poor foundation and I'm always mucking up my handwriting, but Miss Ctesiphona tells me I'm very clever, and I'll catch up to an adult's level in a couple of Light Calendar years.
Serena: Should I open up a bookstore when I grow up? But I think academics command a little more respect...
(If the player chose "Go learn some music theory.")
Serena: Oh it's you, (Mister/Miss)! I'm learning how to play the water lyre with Miss Misia.
Serena: My technique isn't great, but I can sing pretty well. Miss Misia wants me to focus on just learning simple accompanying melodies, and focus more on singing and performing.
Serena: Should I become a singer when I grow up? Being a bard seems pretty cool, too...
(If the player chose "Go learn a craft.")
Serena: Oh it's you, (Mister/Miss)! I'm learning how to sew from Miss Aphrea.
Serena: I'm not very good at this at all, and I'm always stabbing myself in the finger. Luckily, Miss Aphrea is a really patient teacher. She's such a beautiful, kind-hearted person!
Serena: Should I become a tailor when I grow up? I'll never be as good as Lady Aglaea though...
