Diluc Ragnvindr is the current head of the Ragnvindr Clan, a clan that has played a prominent part in Mondstadt's history and is also the current owner of the Dawn Winery, one of the top alcohol makers in all of Teyvat.

Profile

Personality

Kaeya calls himself and Diluc "anti-heroes with attitude problems." Diluc is burdened with a sense of duty and responsibility. He decided to take matters into his own hands by becoming, to his dismay and hidden heartache, the “Darknight Hero” to protect Mondstadt's people. Someone must face the darkness before dawn so others can dream.

Diluc was once an idealistic young man, dedicated to his work with the Knights of Favonius. After his father's untimely demise as a result of using a Delusion, along with Inspector Eroch ordering Diluc to cover up the incident, his faith in the Knights shattered and he left the organization. Even after Eroch was purged from the Knights for being a traitor, he still holds resentment towards them. While he shows disdain towards the Knights, believing them to be too slow, he does not hate everyone in the organization in general, as he talks positively about Lisa, Jean and is on good terms with Varka.

When he was a member of the Knights, he adored his father, Crepus. Being praised by his father made him happier than anything else, and Crepus told Diluc to be faithful in his duties. In his childhood, Diluc had a lighthearted and happy nature. After his father's death, though his speech comes across as bitter and grumpy, he has a gentle, tender, and modest nature. He tends to part with possessions he no longer needs, such as his father's private residence, but struggles more with letting go of memories and emotional wounds.^[6]

Diluc is not fond of alcohol, disliking its taste and that it clouds his mind when working. He prefers non-alcoholic drinks such as grape juice and apple cider, which he had ordered developed upon his return to Mondstadt. This appears to be little known, likely because he is the current owner of Mondstadt's largest winery. He expresses surprise upon learning that Diona also loathes alcohol, having initially believed he was the only bartender in Mondstadt that did not like alcohol.^[7]

Appearance

Diluc uses the tall male model. He has pale skin, red eyes, and bright red hair that goes down to the middle of his back.

History

Past

Diluc is a member of the Ragnvindr Clan, having been born as the son of Crepus Ragnvindr and an unknown mother. He got along well with his father, who later adopted another son called Kaeya. Crepus trained Diluc in order to retain the clan's legacy, who eventually joined the Knights of Favonius. He passed the entry tests and quickly made a name for himself, acquiring a Pyro Vision in the process and becoming the youngest person to hold the title of Cavalry Captain,^[8] at the age of fourteen.^[9]

At Angel's Share, Crepus held a celebration with patrons for his son's coming of age. He and Diluc left the tavern after the party to return home before the rain would come. On the road, a horrific monster, Ursa the Drake, attacked the transport fleet they were traveling with. Many lay dead on the ground and as the monster was about to attack again, Crepus used his Delusion to protect his son and defeat Ursa. The power he wielded was so great that Crepus was mortally wounded. Shortly after, he succumbed to the effects of the Delusion and passed away in Diluc's arms.^{[Note 1]} The Knights of Favonius led by Kaeya witnessed this, having arrived too late to help them. Kaeya remarked about the "fascinating" scene, which resulted in Diluc's relationship with his adoptive brother becoming incredibly strained.

Returning to headquarters with a heavy heart, Diluc was later ordered by Inspector Eroch to conceal the truth. This shook Diluc's faith in the Knights, and angered by their supposed inaction, resigned on the spot and left his Pyro Vision. His departure was met with sadness by many, particularly Varka, who would frequently write letters asking him to rejoin even after discovering the truth. He swore to avenge his father's death and find the source of the calamity that had killed him.^[10] He left the winery's affairs to Adelinde and left Mondstadt, journeying across the nations and eventually discovering the item that killed his father, a Delusion, which was made by the Fatui. In the process, he destroyed numerous Fatui strongholds, catching the attention of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers, forcing them to take action. Their action nearly resulted in his death, but Diluc was saved by Nefer, who was part of the Northern Intelligence Network. Nefer claimed to have observed Diluc for some time and approved of his methods, offering him a spot in her network. Diluc agreed to join, and she gave him the codename "Owl."^[11] Diluc frequently bought intelligence from her and paid it off promptly.^[12] Upon learning the Fatui were after a vial that contained the Anemo Archon's breath, Diluc began interfering in the affair, buying every vial off the market in spite of the numerous counterfeits running rampant.^[13]

Four years after his departure, Diluc returned to a changed Mondstadt; Eroch had been purged from the Knights^[14] while Varka had gone on an expedition to Nod-Krai and left Jean in charge of the nation's affairs. Deciding to take affairs into his own hands, he would become a vigilante at night, eliminating threats to Mondstadt. These acts caused more commotion than his return, with people calling the mysterious vigilante the "Darknight Hero." In his early days of being a vigilante, Diluc fought using throwing knives and the Delusion his father once owned. He also wore a bird mask and a black cloak to hide his identity.^[15] At the same time, he reclaimed his Vision.^[16]

Along with various members of the Knights of Favonius, Diluc rebuffs Krupp's recruitment attempt for the Fatui and later foils the Fatui's plan to attract something dangerous using metal birds during Ludi Harpastum. He eventually uses the Delusion to pose as the perpetrator of the Black Fire Incident due to the similarities between its powers and those of Collei, the true culprit. Afterward, he abandoned the disguise and Delusion, breaking both and mailing them to Dottore. Kaeya returns his Vision under the guise of gifting him a vase.

Diluc would continue overseeing the winery's business, marketing both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks to the public. When Snezhnayan merchants wished to partner with him, he gave them some Dandelion Wine while he received Fire-Water. To respect his guests, Diluc drank the entire glass in one go, but found himself quickly inebriated. After the merchants left, he collapsed in his quarters and did not come out for three days, being tended to by Adelinde during that time. He then declined the partnership, believing that the people of Mondstadt would not be able to handle such a drink.^[17]

Present

The Traveler first meets Diluc when assisting Kaeya in clearing out the Temple of the Wolf, where he eliminates a Hydro Abyss Mage and calling the Knights inefficient. Kaeya takes amusement to his presence, stating that things got more interesting with him around.^[18] After the Holy Lyre was stolen by the Fatui, the Knights mistakenly thought that Venti and the Traveler had stolen it and chased after them. Running into Angel's Share, Diluc sent them to the second floor and misdirected Otto and Miles. He then had the guests come down and demanded to know what had happened. Venti revealed the situation to him through song, and Diluc realized the situation was greater than he thought. He had the bard remain in the tavern and told the Traveler to come back the following day as he spoke with his contacts.^[19] Diluc informed Jean of the events and they concluded that the Fatui were hiding the Lyre elsewhere.^[20]

Tracking a Fatui stronghold at the city outskirts, Diluc and the Traveler reclaimed the Lyre from the Fatui.^[21] In order to restore it, they acquired various Teardrop Crystals scattered across Mondstadt and the Traveler purified them. Wondering where they could summon Dvalin, Jean initially suggested the winery. Diluc disagreed as while the area was away from a large population, he did not want to go through the hassle of rebuilding the winery. Venti then suggested Starsnatch Cliff, which the group agreed to.^[22]

While Dvalin was successfully summoned, the Abyss Order lied to him and claimed Mondstadt wished to kill him, forcing the dragon to fly away. Diluc was unsurprised by the revelation that Venti was the Anemo Archon, implying that he had known his true identity beforehand. He then told the group that they needed to handle the Abyss Order first. They made their way to Stormterror's Lair, breaking the seal surrounding the central tower and allowing them to confront and purify Dvalin of the abyssal influence.^[23]

When Venti was given a nirnama detector by Lisa to test it, he was accompanied by the Traveler and they went to Angel's Share. Diluc learned why they came and told him that he had no imaginary friends, even if they had approached him fifteen years ago.^[24] The Traveler and Venti discovered that Stanley had an imaginary friend and uncovered the truth, which Diluc witnessed and believed that Stanley's story would continue on.^[25]

Diluc loaned his tavern for the Knights to host a party for Jean; though he did not wish to sponsor them, he did so as a gesture of appreciation for Jean's hard work.^[26]

Later, Diluc eliminated an Abyss Mage, which was witnessed by the Traveler, much to his surprise. He told them not to inform the Knights of his identity and left before Huffman arrived. The following day, Huffman told the Traveler that the Abyss Order left a threatening note for his actions, which they reported to him. The letter needed to be translated, so Diluc had the Traveler accompany him to another stronghold and confronted Landrich, a mage inside the stronghold. Landrich refused to give information on the attack, so Diluc began using Searing Hand on it. The mage eventually broke to the torture and revealed the incoming attack. When they returned to prepare a counterattack, Kaeya asked Huffman to watch Diluc the following night. To cover his tracks, Diluc planned to create an experimental slime bait to lure a large amount of slimes to the city so he could handle the horde himself. Learning that Huffman would be watching him, Diluc also prepared another plan to distract him, asking his winery staff to go to the tavern. As the bait was set that night, Huffman prepared to watch Diluc, only to be informed of a slime attack. Huffman was resistant on going, but Diluc shamed him into it and eliminated the horde before Huffman returned. Kaeya then arrived and Diluc asked him if he was going to expose his secret, though Kaeya declined. As Diluc saw him out, he thanked the Traveler for their assistance.^[27]

During the Windblume Festival, Diluc explained the purpose of the Windblume Star to the Traveler. He also met Rosaria and discerned that she was no ordinary sister. As the Traveler and Jean gave their offerings to the Anemo Archon, Diluc was at Angel's Share and nonchalantly took a bottle of alcohol away from Kaeya and Rosaria.^[28]

Diluc and Kaeya were later brought to the Golden Apple Archipelago with Razor and Albedo. He was convinced to join after he received a letter from Dodo-King that an Abyss Order stronghold was on the archipelago, and they were picked up by Dvalin. Razor jumped off Dvalin when something caught his attention, while Albedo snuck away when the two were arguing. Kaeya suggested an alternate landing site than originally agreed on, forcing him to freeze the water to create a path. Unfortunately, Diluc's Pyro Vision melted the ice, resulting in them taking longer than expected and generating steam from a distance. After catching up with the others and defeating a strange automaton at the center of the archipelago, Diluc suggested investigating rather than standing around and making theories.^[29] Further investigation revealed that Alice had planned the event all along, which Diluc found unsurprising since it was only her or Venti that could plan such an event.^[30]

The Traveler later met with Diluc and Kaeya to help Razor brew his own Thousand-Wind Wine during Weinlesefest. Diluc offered a specially treated barrel for the purpose and had it sent to the venue. He then offered them a meal, which Kaeya initially refused, but was forced to accept after Adelinde began flirting with him. After the meal, Diluc told the Traveler that while he was not familiar with Razor, he was willing to help him.^[31]

Diluc was brought in as a witness during a trial against Albedo, who was accused of murdering Mondstadt's people. He claimed to have seen him dispose of a body while out on a walk and later exhumed it after he left, discovering a few trace remains. In the subsequent retrial, the Traveler revealed additional evidence proving his innocence, and when Albedo stated he killed someone that looked like him but was not a "person," Diluc realized the meaning behind his words and retracted his testimony.^[32] As Durin's monsters began their siege on the city, Diluc and Kaeya defended the city from monsters who tried to cross the bridge. During the fight, Diluc told Kaeya that he knew something was off with the trial as he wasn't "nervous" enough and that he didn't believe that Albedo was a cold-blooded killer for what he had done for him.^[33]

Upon hearing that someone was selling "authentic" Mondstadt wine at Nasha Town's trade expo, Diluc decided to take some time to personally visit the seller. He met with Nefer, who assured him that she only allowed Fassbender to sell his wares after concluding they posed no threat to their collaboration. Diluc sampled Fassbender's wine and immediately labeled it as an imitator. Fassbender swore that his product would surpass Diluc's, but Diluc told him that while his product was acceptable, the fact that blatantly tried to market the product as the winery's meant that he would pose no threat to his business. Nefer then asked if he was willing to have some tea with the Traveler and Paimon, but Diluc turned down the offer, telling Nefer he would give her an authentic vintage when she came to Mondstadt.^[34]

When monsters started roaming the area around Dornman Port, Diluc was worried about his shipments being intercepted and personally went out to investigate the rumors. He arrived at one spot only to find the monsters completely eliminated without a trace, denying involvement as it was not "his" style. More monsters continued to emerge, and he worked with Lohen to eliminate another group before deciding to investigate the remains to see what was causing their unnatural activity. Varka and the Traveler arrived, where the Grand Master spoke about Ursa's past, which impressed Diluc as they were also aware of the anomaly. He insisted on resolving the current threat and traced Lohen's movements to an abandoned laboratory. There, they eliminated the remaining monsters and ensured that Ursa's flesh could no longer be used.^[35]

Trivia

• Diluc is one of the characters with ornaments that glow. While wearing his default outfit, Darknight Blaze, when Diluc's Elemental Burst is ready, the red gem on his tie and the red crosses on the four buttons on the back of his coat will glow along with his Vision.
• Diluc has no object that appears to be a Vision while wearing his themed outfit Red Dead of Night, but when switching to Diluc when his Elemental Burst is ready, the projected elemental symbol that is typically seen over other characters' Visions is seen over the red gem in the phoenix insignia's eye on the left side of his chest.
• Diluc and his relationship with Kaeya are referred to with the following terms in the original Chinese version of Kaeya's Character Details, Kaeya's Vision story, an interactable during Hidden Strife, Archon Quest Destined Encounter in Chapter III: Act VI - Caribert, Event Story Quest Of Ballads and Brews: Act II - Bonds of Melody, Taste of Home in Hangout Event: Kaeya: Act I - Shenanigans and Sweet Wine, and Flame Born (Chapter 2 of the manga):
  • Kaeya's 义兄 yì xiōng, "sworn older brother," while Kaeya is referred to as Diluc's 义弟 yìdì, "sworn younger brother."
    • The former term is also used by Dwarkanath to describe her adoptive brother Iradj.
    • These terms make it likely that Kaeya is younger than Diluc, but not guaranteed. (For example, the birth year of Guan Yu (? – 220), a sworn younger brother of Liu Bei (161 – 223), was traditionally considered to be 160.^[36])
    • The meaning of "sworn brothers" is complex and usually refers to a delicate bond built from trust and honor between close, unrelated friends.
  • A 兄弟 xiōngdì, "brother" to Kaeya.
  • Relatedly, Kaeya is described as a 义子 yìzǐ, "foster son" to the Ragnvindr Family and Crepus's 养子 yǎngzǐ, "adopted son," while Kaeya refers to Crepus as his 养父 yǎngfù, "adoptive father" and 义父 yìfù, "adoptive father." This affects Kaeya's relationship with Diluc, as they were raised in the same household.
• The vase Kaeya gifts him in the manga can be found in-game, inside the Dawn Winery. Its description notes it looks out-of-place and is probably a gift. This is the same vase he mentions during A Child's Secret.
• In Flame Born, the second chapter of the manga, a close look at a picture frame on the shelf in Diluc's manor reveals that it depicts HOMU, a mascot from HoYoverse's other game Honkai Impact 3rd. Next to the picture frame is a book with an eight-pointed star on its back cover; this symbol is typically seen on the clothing of characters from Khaenri'ah and the Abyss Order.
• Despite owning a winery, Diluc dislikes the mouthfeel of alcohol and prefers grape juice, which he keeps stocked at Angel's Share.
  • According to Vile, Diluc once downed an entire glass of Snezhnaya's specialty alcohol, Fire-Water, in one go during a banquet with Snezhnayan merchants. Afterwards, he passed out for three days, and Adelinde remarked that she'd "never seen someone get drunk like that before." Charles' dialogue about Fire-Water may be referencing this incident.
• Diluc has a habit of pulling his left glove up — he does so in his character card, in an idle animation, and before attacking enemies during certain cutscenes. This may be related to the fact that Diluc previously wore his Delusion on his left glove.
• Based on his character stories, Diluc's estimated age is roughly 22 years old. Diluc left Mondstadt after his father's death on his 18th birthday, and by the time he returned 4 years later, Varka — who embarked on his expedition 6 months before the game's story — was already gone.
  • The manga's timeline conflicts with Diluc's character stories. The manga is set merely 3 years after Crepus' death, making its events occur before Diluc returned to Mondstadt.
• In Diluc's official wish art, he is seen wielding the Bloodtainted Greatsword, a gacha weapon.
• Diluc has an anonymous message on the Cat's Tail Message Board, in which he lets himself express wistfulness for the past before wishing Cat's Tail luck in their business.
• Diluc owns an Umbertail Falcon and used to own a pet tortoise.

Etymology

• Diluc's name is derived from the Latin word dīlūculum, meaning "daybreak" or "dawn."
  • His father, Crepus, has his named derived from its antonym, crepusculum, meaning "twilight," "dusk," or "darkness."
• His constellation, Noctua, is Latin for "The Owl," or literally, "Night Bird."^[43]
• His family name, Ragnvindr, may be derived from the Old Norse words regin (gods) + vindr (wind), meaning "Wind God."
