Frederica Gunnhildr, also known as the Alder Knight,^[3] is a Captain of the Knights of Favonius. She is the mother of Jean and Barbara, and a member of Mondstadt's Gunnhildr Clan.^[4] She has been a knight in the Knights of Favonius for several decades, and was the second-in-command of Grand Master Varka's expedition^[1] until she was sent back to Dornman Port in Mondstadt with a small group of knights.^[5] Frederica is currently on a secret mission with an unnamed purpose, her exact whereabouts are unknown to everyone besides Acting Grand Master Jean.^[6][7]

Story

Frederica is a member of the Gunnhildr Clan, Mondstadt's oldest family of knights and a proud, venerable lineage.^[4] She met and fell in love with Seamus Pegg, a famous former adventurer turned the Church of Favonius' "Cardinal of Daybreak." They married and had two daughters together, Jean and Barbara. In time, a rift formed in their marriage and the two parted ways. Jean stayed with Frederica, while Barbara was raised by their father.^[8] Frederica raised Jean to be the successor of the Gunnhildr Clan using a strict regimen^[4] and allowed her daughter few frivolities; for Jean's birthday, Frederica would take her on a simple trip to Windrise instead of holding birthday parties.^[9]

Frederica was a commander for majority of her time in the Knights of Favonius and has fought on the battlefield for decades. Despite long surpassing the requirements for becoming a captain, Frederica prefers staying on the front lines.^[1] She was part of Varka's expedition with most of the Knights of Favonius,^[10] serving as Varka's second-in-command.^[1] During her travels, she discovered a fine sword and mailed it to Jean as a birthday gift.^[11]

During the event Mutual Security Enhancing Simulation, Knights of Favonius member Phonia speculated that Frederica will be made Captain of the newly reformed, but currently leaderless, 7th Company once she returned from the expedition.^[1] After the expedition discovered new information, Frederica was ordered to return to Mondstadt along with several other knights while Varka headed to Nod-Krai to investigate. She aided in the defense of Dornman Port. Being relatively nearby compared to the last several years, she would join Barbara to visit Jean at her office the evening before her oldest's birthday, so they could spend the next day together.^[5]

After completing the Archon Quest Song of the Welkin Moon: Act IV - An Elegy for Faded Moonlight, three NPCs from the Knights of Favonius will appear near the "Speranza" Food Location in Nod-Krai. They mention Frederica by describing her as "Captain Frederica", likely referring to her promotion to the 7th Company's Captain after her return to Mondstadt.^[12]

Varka described Frederica as someone "who never had a good word for anyone", and wondered if hell has finally frozen over, which could imply that she was rather cold in her youth until Seamus arrived in Mondstadt.^[13] During one of Varkas' birthdays, Seamus, Frederica, Valentine, and other members of the Knights of Favonius prepared a gift for him, a sword, but they could not decide a name for it.^[14]

The youth grows up on stories of the Alder Knight. Inspired and admired by her deeds and efforts for Mondstadt as a knight, they also wish to give their blood and sweat to defend Mondstadt one day, and serve alongside her daughter Jean.^[15]

As stated by Elishka found in Angel's Share, in Jeans' childhood, when she was knee-high to a grasshopper, she often waited in front of the headquarters with her perfect scores for Frederica to get off work. Frederica told Jean after some time that she doesn't have to be perfect all the time and is allowed to make mistakes, and that she should cultivate a positive image in the hearts of her friends.

Frederica is currently on a secret mission that only Varka and Jean know about.^[16]
