The Gunnhildr Clan, also known as House Gunnhildr,[1] is one of the prominent families in Mondstadt, alongside the Ragnvindr Clan, the Imunlaukr Clan and formerly, the Lawrence Clan.
The Gunnhildr Clan is descended from Great Arcadia as scions of the hallowed line, and once revered Istaroth as their former lady.[2][3]
History
Great Arcadia
The history of the Gunnhildr Clan dates back to the era of Great Arcadia. The clan controlled the land now known as Windrest Peak,[4] where the city-state of Elysium was located.[5]
The Arcadians believed that the glory of their nation would endure forever. However, calamity eventually befell Arcadia, depriving the land of its vitality and burying the ancient kingdom beneath an endless winter.[2] The Gunnhildr Clan believed that Elysium, eternally sealed within its coffin, would one day overcome the destruction wrought by external corruption and flourish once more like a sacred forest.[5]
According to an ancient prophecy, Gunnhildr, the Knight of the Golden Bough, was regarded as its hero and the last hope of Arcadia. In search of the Golden Bough, he journeyed to a sacred grove in the frozen lands of Snezhnaya, where he defeated the Jack Frost King and discovered that the Bough had already lost its divine blessings. Abandoning his quest to restore his nation, Gunnhildr turned south, and in the years that followed, gathered the surviving Arcadians who were willing to leave their ruined capital behind, and eventually led them to the high tower where the wicked dragon had once been cast down, seeking refuge under Decarabian, the God of Storms.[2]
During Decarabian's Rule
After growing disillusioned with Decarabian's despotic rule, Gunnhildr's father led them out of the city rather than serve under a tyrant.[6]
The Gunnhildr Clan, struggling to survive the blizzards and cold outside the city, built a shrine high atop a cliff in the east, in the Thousand Winds Temple, where they prayed for the divine mercy and protection of Istaroth,[7] which a wind spirit heard. Gaining power from the clan's faith, the wind spirit was able to give them a small shelter. After her father died, Gunnhildr took the role as leader of the clan and became the first priestess, protecting the clan with the power bestowed on her by the wind spirit.[6] When Barbatos challenged Decarabian, Gunnhildr led her clan to fight by his side, and when he succeeded, she pledged loyalty to the new Anemo Archon and crowned him with laurels.[3][6]
Post Decarabian's Rule
After Barbatos scattered the ice and snow and terraformed Mondstadt with his divine winds, the Gunnhildr Clan returned north to their ancient fortress, within the lands that would later become part of their hereditary fiefdom in Mondstadt, and over time, this region would eventually become Dornman Port. It's said that the port was named after one of the clan’s ancestors, the Thorn King.[8] And it was here that they established Mondstadt's very first sacred sanctuary dedicated to Barbatos.[4]
Early Aristocratic Period
The oath that the ancient Mondstadt inhabitants took when Barbatos reformed the land and founded new Mondstadt features the Gunnhildr Clan's saying, and was either created by Gunnhildr or at the very least that clan remembered the oath better than the other clans. Swordsmanship becoming mandatory for nobles likely originated from the Gunnhildr Clan's culture of always being ready to protect Mondstadt.[9]
During the time that the people of Mondstadt worshipped the gods of Anemo and Time together, the Gunnhildr Clan would enact the defense of Mondstadt with prop weapons.[10]
Late Aristocratic Period
The Gunnhildr Clan remained a prominent clan throughout the Aristocracy, but they stayed true to their oath to protect Mondstadt and did what they could to help the people.
During the dark age of the old aristocracy, the Church gradually devolved into a mere puppet of the aristocracy, and to signal a total break from the increasingly tyrannical Imunlaukr Clan, the Gunnhildrs of the time seized the bishop sent from Mondstadt, hurled him from the window of the sanctuary's high tower, and subsequently tore it down, and ever since then, the port has remained without a church.[4]
During Vennessa's rebellion the Gunnhildr Clan sided with the people and were spared from exile unlike the rest of the Aristocracy.[6] After the rebellion, the clan would lead a push to abolish hereditary fiefdoms, and likely set an example in handing over their own fief to the people of Mondstadt.[4]
Present
The Gunnhildr Clan continues to keep their oath to protect Mondstadt, with many knights and clergy members coming from that clan.[6]
The Dornmannshaven family is a cadet branch of the clan. Their motto is "Sail Toward Freedom".[11]

- It's possible that the high priest of Arcadia, to whom a divine envoy bestowed the Golden Bough of Nemorensis,[12] was an ancestor of the Gunnhildr Clan. This may be related to the fact that Gunnhildr was known as the Knight of the "Golden Bough", which could imply that he wielded the same sword, and that he and his descendants belonged to the "hallowed lineage" of Arcadia.[2]
