Description

"If you're asking about stronger spears... They exist, of course."

Monomakh once asked his master about this matter in a break between bouts of training so harsh that even a fae could scarcely imagine them.
Then, the young man was lean as a white-barked birch, and also akin to the dim ashes of a stove that had lost the last of its lingering warmth.
He gasped for air on the ice, but his clear eyes gleamed coldly with a yearning to attain the highest levels of martial prowess.
Looking upon his young, frail yet stubborn form, the crimson princess of the snow bent down in silence,
And strangely, there was a trace of nostalgia in those frigid eyes, which had survived the ruins of the golden city.

"Once, in the lost golden city, I beheld a spear that could even shoot Lord of the Sky down..."

"I... don't think I can do that?" The innocent and earnest youth asked tentatively, his voice low.

"Of course you can't. You can't even defeat me," the princess replied.
"You asked if there were stronger spears in this world, not whether you could or could not learn them."
"I, too, once saw a spear strike a blow that could pierce the boundless frosty plains and smash tidal waves of demons into dust."
"Like a arrow shot from a bow, it transfixed countless rivers and mountains in but an instant."

"I'd like to learn that!" The guileless, honest youth stood up excitedly despite his exhaustion.
"That way, I can protect more— Gwahck!"

"Start by firming up your stance, kid."
The crimson princess of snow sighed, and spoke no more about a past now rendered futile.

The years would pass, freezing the warmth of the teachings of yesteryear, and the fires of war would set the far northern wilds ablaze.
Amidst a bloody sea of strife, Monomakh, who had sworn to become king, would continue to hone his skills with the spear.
Further, further, furtheer still—
Until his thrown spear would fall like a silver star,
Obliterating all foes who would stand in compassion's way.
Let it pierce the Water Imp hidden deep in the frozen lake!
Let it pierce the bull stalking the thick forest glades!
Let it pierce even the giant beast, mighty as a mountain!
This then was the supreme art of the spear, taught to him by the Knyazhna of Blood who had slaughtered countless fae in a previous age.
There were some divergences between this and the art she had personally mentored him in, yes, but that was unimportant.

Holy, holy, holy! Holy is our Emperor Monomakh, unconquered conqueror of countless winters, most majestic and merciful father!
Fae and mortal humans alike yielded prostrate before the Pale Star's throne, and together they sang praises to the king who had unified the vast northern realms,
Yet the heart of the god who ruled them all in the name of love grew ever more perplexed.
His martial prowess was unequaled, and he had strength enough to tear through glaciers and raging seas,
But he could never recreate what his master had spoken of, the spear that had transfixed vast snowfields beyond count in an instant.
Even with all his might, hurling his polearm as a bow fires an arrow, he could only traverse half of Snezhnaya...
Surely, Monomakh thought, this is because I am not yet strong enough. Master would never lie.

Thousands of winters passed, and the snow-blanketed realm had welcomed in roaring gears and molten steel.
The valiant and sagacious old emperor paid a personal visit to a blazing-hot workshop, observing the newly-minted mass production of armaments most wondrous.
Looking upon the creations forged of steel and Prime Ice which the artisans had named "muskets,"
His Majesty, the Emperor Monomakh, most severe, most merciful, most wise, fell into a long silence...

Ah. That's true.
Master never said that the "spears" of the golden city were thrown, did she?
