Koitar

Koitar, also known as the Goddess of the Dawnstar, is the first Angel of Celestia, the wife of Anacharsis, and a god, who ruled Hyperborea during the unified civilization. Originally a divine envoy of Celestia, she was convinced by Anacharsis 6,000 years ago to turn against the Heavenly Principles, and the two of them led Hyperborea for a period of thirty years in an attempted rebellion that ultimately ended in failure. Following the end of the war of funerary flame, the Heavenly Principles wiped her memories as punishment for the rebellion, causing her to lose both her power and wisdom.^[2] However, she managed to recover them through a chance encounter with Boreas and has since returned to Hyperborea awaiting a reunion with Anacharsis.

Profile

Koitar was married to Anacharsis.^[1] According to a legend from the Songbook of Saint Strivozha, the two of them gave birth to seven "Preexistent Gods" and twelve "Preexistent Men," who in turn sired countless descendants.^{[3][Note 1]}

Story

Koitar was the first Angel created by the Heavenly Principles during the unified civilization, being described as their "first and fairest daughter"^[1] and as the "most exalted of the angels."^[4] She, along with her fellow angels, wore elemental crowns that also acted as shackles, binding them to their duty of serving the Heavenly Principles and guiding the nations of Teyvat during the era of the unified civilization.^[5] During her time as a divine envoy of Celestia, she personally carried out the Heavenly Principles's punishments towards various nations of Teyvat, having destroyed numerous civilizations on their behalf.^[1][6] She was eventually appointed as the divine envoy to Hyperborea, and took up residence near their local Irminsul tree underground.^[7]

One day, the angel was visited by Anacharsis, who had possessed the body of a Hyperborean boy,^[8] who questioned why the pursuit of knowledge was considered sinful.^[7] He asked Koitar about the "forbidden origins" of Teyvat, and told her of his own origins — that his consciousness was actually that of a cosmic voyager who had visited Teyvat before.^[8] Stunned by this revelation, as well as the possibility of living beyond the Heavenly Principles's strict rule, Koitar's crown broke and she felt true love and freedom for the first time.^[5] She told Anacharsis the secrets of creation, and Anacharsis vowed to stand alongside her in rebellion against the Heavenly Principles.^[4] Their conversation did not go unnoticed by the Three Moon Goddesses.^[4] Koitar later tried to encourage her fellow Angels to join her in rebelling against the Heavenly Principles, warning them of their future fate of being cursed into Seelies.^[9]

Using forbidden methods of creation imparted by Koitar, artisans in Hyperborea forged "countless fae spirits upon the bones of giant beasts." Koitar hoped that one day, these fae creatures would create a perfect being that could "merge with the world," and envisioned a time when mortals and gods could reside in the heavens together. Koitar and Anacharsis took control over Hyperborea, teaching its people advanced technology and encouraging them to explore the sea of stars beyond the false sky.^[10] They were in charge of the city for thirty years,^[11] until the city was struck down by the Heavenly Principles with Celestial Nails during the war of funerary flame.^[12] Koitar and Anacharsis tried to flee, but they were eventually caught and punished by the Heavenly Principles, who cursed Koitar, as well as the rest of her kin, to lose their minds and bodies if they ever fell in love.^[12][13]

After losing her memories, Koitar was confined to the Royal Court of the Seelie, where she wept over her loneliness and misery with her kin, whom she could no longer recognize. It was implied that she sang the song that could be heard in the Amsvartnir, strumming her lyre to ease her sorrow. While detained, she encountered a wolf that initially struck her as a servant, a foolish and simple dog. However, it bore no resentment when she patted or mocked it; instead, it obeyed her commands and decrees. Koitar found it pleasing to the eye and allowed it to stay by her side among the Seelies in the court, naming it Boreas, or the "North Wind." Through learning or blessing, it gained human speech and spoke with intelligence, treating others with kindness and calling her mother. One day, it requested to go to the South and aid its people. Koitar granted its request, and it departed with its kin. Through Boreas, she remembers her Anacharsis and the punishment by the Heavenly Principles. She vowed to return to her homeland, sing in the ruins, and await for her wife's freedom, await for the "star beyond the stars".^[14][15]
