History

Little is known directly about the history and inhabitants of the sea of stars, but it is known to be a dangerous cosmos, explicitly described as a black forest. It is the space where thousands of planets, civilizations And life forms exist, where all the Descenders such as the Heavenly Principles, Saarelainen, and the Traveler themselves came from, and where unknown threats and cosmic calamities, such as Surtalogi, the All-Devouring Narwhal and the Abyss itself reside. A multitude of these planets were explored by Octavia.

List of Worlds

Teyvat

Teyvat is the main setting of Genshin Impact and is described as a fantasy world where the seven elements flow and converge. Its planet is located on the edge of a spiral arm of an unnamed galaxy in the sea of stars.^[3]

In the Old World, Teyvat had three moons - the Eternal, Frost and Iridescent Moons - that were created by Nibelung from the planetary crust to govern the world in his stead while he was traveling the sea of stars.^[4] Sometime during his absense, the Heavenly Principles descended upon Teyvat and took control over the planet, creating a false sky that enveloped the planet and kept the universe hidden from Teyvat.

During the Funerary Year, Nibelung returned to Teyvat, introduced the Abyss to the world and waged war against the Heavenly Principles. In the aftermath, the Heavenly Principles emerged victorious and remains as Teyvat's current ruler. The Eternal and Iridescent Moons were shattered during the war and the Frost Moon was flung beyond the false sky into the sea of stars. As of Archon Quest Song of the Welkin Moon: Act VIII - True Moon, the Frost Moon was revitalized and was drawn back into the interior of the false sky.

The Traveler's Planet

The Traveler and their sibling were originally the rulers of an unnamed planet^[5] that fell to destruction because of a "star-devouring darkness,"^[6] starting their travels between various worlds in a spaceship.^[7] Very little is known about this world, aside from being the origin of the Traveler's spaceship and clothing.

Skirk's Planet

Skirk originated from an unnamed planet that was home to humans with ability to adapt to any type of environment or energy source.^[8] At some point, a "merchant ship" from a neighboring planet investigated Skirk's planet and deemed the inhabitants to be a "potential threat", due to their special adaptation ability. It is unknown what happened to the planet after Skirk escaped with the help of Surtalogi.

Throgg

Throgg was a land ruled over by the immortal Ysna'qurel, child of Ghel'vur, and their empire. It was ultimately destroyed by the "Dark Destroyer", and sent out a message into the cosmos warning of the coming destruction. It's unclear if the entire world was destroyed, or if simply civilization on the world was wiped out. This message was received by the Moongazer Nin-Kiggia.^[9]

1896th	— Cloud Edge's Glory	Skyward Citadel: Magnificent Pillars	The bronze age civilization is divided into numerous city-states where they were constantly at war with each other and had long been mired in conflict. However, the arrival of enemies from the Abyss united the people by holding sacred tournaments during ceremonies honoring their heroes, with the one who obtained the most crowns becoming the leader of all city-states, responsible for quelling internal strife and repelling external enemies. Upholding the tradition of respecting all the mighty warriors, Octavia, who had descended upon this world, was invited by the city-states to participate in this tournament in which she won every competition she entered without question and, together with the civilization, successfully repelled the Abyssal force. Her image, clad in the Cloud Edge's Glory Set, was immortalized in a statue that still stands in the hall of sacred tournaments.[10]

Earth

Alice is familiar with various concepts from the real-life Earth, introducing idol culture to Barbara via a magazine and having previously made statements about the Rubicon, with the implied context of the real-life phrase "crossing the Rubicon."^[11]

Because Alice is capable of breaking the fourth wall,^[12] it is unclear if her familiarity of real-world terminology is from a fictionalized version of Earth that exists beyond Teyvat or is considered part of her breaking the fourth wall.

Aloy's World

Aloy originated from an unnamed world that experienced an apocalyptic threat 1,000 years ago as a result of the artificial intelligence HADES. After HADES' defeat, Aloy embarked on a new journey before coming across a gleaming portal in an ancient, dilapidated laboratory, which would bring her to the world of Teyvat.^[13]

Aloy's world is set in the post-apocalyptic United States in the 31st Century and, as a collaboration character, Aloy and her origins are not considered canon within Genshin Impact.

Various Descenders and other extraterrestrial beings originated from beyond Teyvat and the Dark Sea.
