Dialogue
The Knights of Favonius's expeditionary force seems to be anticipating something...
- Varka: ...Nannina's covering the north, so we'll have Laurent take the east... Right, that's all for now.
- (If the player has not met Varka yet, an introductory note appears on screen)
Varka — Knight of Boreas
Grand Master of the Knights of Favonius, also known as Mondstadt's "Knight of Boreas."
He is a straightforward and bold individual known for his wit, humor, and willingness to disregard convention. Behind this seemingly casual demeanor, however, lies a composure and confidence forged through countless battles.
When crisis strikes, the oath sworn by the Knight of Boreas is as sure as the strokes of his sword.
- Paimon: Heya, Varka!
- Varka: Huh? Honorary Knight? Paimon? What brings you to my camp?
Just moseying about, happened to run into you...
Did we interrupt?- Varka: Not at all! Any camp of the Knights of Favonius is your camp too, so make yourself at home.
- Varka: Though you should give me a heads up next time so I can have the quartermaster break out the good stuff for you.
- Paimon: Is this really the expeditionary force's camp? Paimon was expecting it to be a bit more... crowded?
- Varka: Not many from the force are still stationed here, and of those who are, most are out patrolling. Truth be told... Hahaha, it is a bit of a ghost town.
What are the people left here doing?- (Condition missing)
- (Condition missing)
-
- Varka: To that end, we're collecting intel from across Nod-Krai. Even with Rerir sealed, things haven't completely quieted down yet.
- (Condition missing)
-
- Varka: We're also gathering all the Abyss-related intel we can. Situation in Nod-Krai's stable for now, but we must remain vigilant. You never know when the Abyss'll come roaring back.
- Varka: Intelligence is the foundation of any campaign. It's not just enemy movements — terrain or shifts in the weather can mean the difference between victory and defeat.
- Varka: Moving forward, we plan to form a long-term partnership with the Northern Intelligence Network, turn this temporary camp into an intelligence station.
- Paimon: A—An intelligence station? Whoa, like the kind in Fontainian spy thrillers!?
- Varka: Haha, as if! Name one book with a camp this lightly defended in it!
- Varka: During these years out on campaign, we've found that different Abyssal disasters are occurring all over Teyvat. They're unnaturally cunning, always shifting, with no two attacks quite going off the same.
- Varka: I hope to use the Northern Intelligence Network to share our findings, and use that collaboration to keep gathering information on the Abyss.
- Varka: This isn't any one nation's burden. Every day, countless winds blow through Nod-Krai... I'd say that makes it the perfect place to set up an outpost.
- Paimon: Ohhh, so that's why... So this is "chivalry" in action!
- Varka: Haha! Well, "chivalry"'s good and all, but in reality... We've only just established this station, and don't even have a good map of the nearby terrain.
- Varka: If you stumble across any building materials or intel nearby, don't forget to bring them back with you.
- Varka: Rest assured, you're our Honorary Knight. We'll look after you.
Leave it to me!- Varka: Ha, one expedition wraps up, another begins.
- Winfried: G—Grand Master! We've got big trouble, Sir!
- Varka: Oh? What is it?
- Winfried: That important guest we were expecting today... He's trapped at the foot of the mountain!
- Varka: WHAT!? Is it... who I think it is!?
- Winfried: Yes, Sir! It's him! Most of our available manpower is tied up in patrols. Who do we reassign...
- Varka: —No need! Just point me in the right direction, I'll handle it myself! Honorary Knight, Paimon, 'til next time!
- Paimon: ...Whoa, Paimon's never seen Varka so nervous! Now she's curious who that guest is...
Could it be... a critical informant?- Paimon: Yeah, that's probably it! Let's follow him and see if he needs help!
- (Approach the person in need)
- Critical Informant?: H—Help, please help me!
- (After defeating the wolves)
- Paimon: —Hey, are you okay?
- Donatas: I—I'm fine... Phew, good thing you guys showed up so fast, or I might not have made it by sundown.
- Varka: ...Praise be! Our "essential supplies" made it through, safe and sound.
- Paimon: Uh, what kind of supplies are that important...?
Booze. It's gotta be.
Why do I smell alcohol?- Varka: Good eye! This here is the Dandelion Wine we specially ordered from Dawn Winery! Pure Mondstadt in a bottle!
- Donatas: You have no idea what it took us to get it here all the way from there.
- Varka: Hah, and a fine job you did! You're drinking with us at the feast tonight. Whole camp's been looking forward to toasting you!
- Paimon: ...So the only reason you were in a hurry was to make sure the drinks got there in time? And here Paimon thought you were finally being serious about something serious...
- Varka: What's that? Are you saying drinking isn't the most serious of serious business? Because I'd love to have a drink right about... now.
- Donatas: W—Wait! Please, wait a second! Now's not a good time!
- Paimon: Yeah, listen to him! First, you gotta take care of the serious...
- Donatas: This is a custom brew, it needs to be kept constantly rolling to prevent settling and keep its flavor! Having sat for so long, I'd say the taste has degraded... by at least ten percent!
- Varka: Ten percent!? Unacceptable! Nobody touches a drop 'til it's ready!
- Paimon: ...Ooookay. You do you, then.
So, how can we bring it back up to scratch?- Donatas: We specially commissioned someone to build a mechanism that keeps the barrels rolling... Looks like it broke in the fall, though. So now, I guess we'll have to rely on old-fashioned muscle power.
- Varka: Hmm, so we just keep whacking the wooden barrels and roll 'em to their destination...? Sounds like some good old Knights of Favonius strength training.
Wait, the Knights train that way?- Varka: Aye, teaches force control and precision. Need both, or the barrel won't stay true to the path. It's basic training for many knights.
Consider my curiosity piqued.
As the Honorary Knight, I'd like to try my hand.- Varka: Hah, keen on basic drills, are we? Well, Laurent and the others won't be back for a while...
- Varka: Right then, all yours. Don't worry about knocking 'em a bit too far. Just holler and I'll toss 'em back into place.
- (A tutorial is shown)
- (Talk to Varka at any point while delivering the barrel, optional)
- Varka: Need me on barrel duty, or just wanted to chat for a bit?
Please reposition it...
- Varka: Right then! No quitting now, chin up and try again!
- (Resets the barrel's position)
- Varka: Right then! No quitting now, chin up and try again!
Let's talk a bit...
- (Repeats Varka's automatic dialogue for the current section of the challenge)
- (Push the Barrel too far off)
- Varka: Hmm, hitting some snags, are you? First-timers often fumble, it's normal. If you need help, just say the word.
- (While rolling the barrel to the first checkpoint)
-
- Varka: Back when I was training Noelle, she'd blast the barrels to splinters the second she got nervous. Couldn't stop her from cleaning up the whole mess herself afterward.
- Varka: Over time... She became the finest cleaner in the Knights, bar none. Ha, she might not have realized it, but that's progress too.
- (While rolling the barrel to the second checkpoint)
-
- Varka: First time I did this training with Razor, it took us an entire day to finish. Know why?
- Varka: —He spent a quarter of the day rolling the barrels, and the other three quarters trying to figure out what the heck I was talking about.
- (While rolling the barrel to the third checkpoint)
-
- Varka: Jean and Albedo once sat me down to have a serious discussion about whether or not the Spark Knight needed to take part in basic training like this.
- Varka: A knight's basic training helps build character, but since the Spark Knight's still so young... I decided to get her opinion.
- Varka: ...She happily brought her bombs to the training grounds. And so, we reached a consensus: We won't discuss the matter again until she's a bit older.
- (After reaching the third checkpoint)
- Paimon: Ugh... Paimon's hands are sore just from watching you! There's gotta be an easier way, right?
- (The camera pans to a nearby Slothsheep)
- (While rolling the barrel to the last checkpoint)
-
- Varka: Come to think of it, you haven't met Lohen yet, have you? Kid's so used to doing things his way, he didn't even show up when it was time for the training.
- Varka: Asked him about it later, he said he went to poke a hornet's nest full of monsters, and as for barrel drills... He didn't think targets that wouldn't hit back were worth his time.
- (Use the Slothsheep to hit the barrel, optional)
-
- (The barrel is launched with tremendous power, landing directly at the last checkpoint)
- Varka: Ha! So, that's how you did it? Not half bad... Wisdom's another kind of strength, after all.
- (After reaching the last checkpoint)
- Winfried: Ah! Grand Master! Honorary Knight! They're back!
- Ekbert: They're back! They're back! Everyone, fall in and give 'em a proper welcome!
- Paimon: Wow, we're this popular? Paimon feels like blushing...
- Leifhelm: —How the wind carries that scent from afar! Sweet Barbatos, it's true! Dandelion Wine!
- Winfried: A special brew from Dawn Winery, to boot! They're back... all my precious memories... they're all flooding back!
- Paimon: Uh... So, the welcome isn't for us, is it...
- Ekbert: Yes, this is it, this is the taste... It's just how I remembered it!
- Leifhelm: Amazing, after all these years...
- Winfried: Ah, I was starting to think I'd already forgotten the taste of a good Dawn Winery vintage...
- Ekbert: If the taste hasn't changed... then my home back in Springvale probably hasn't changed either... right?
...
It's the same, I've been there.- Ekbert: ...Thank you, Honorary Knight!
- Varka: ...That's enough, put a cork in it, everyone. Barrels stay sealed until everyone's back. Let's finish the party prep in the meantime.
- Winfried: Yes, Sir! On it, Sir!
- Varka: ...Like I said: Drinking is the most serious of serious business.
- (The Knights celebrate long into the night, but Varka is conspicuously nowhere to be found)
- Paimon: Ooooh... Sticky Honey Roast... Sweet Madames... Paimon never thought she'd get to eat such authentic Mondstadt dishes out here...
- Paimon: Uh, wait, where's Varka? Anyone seen him? He's not passed out drunk in a ditch somewhere, is he?
Given his liver's battle prowess, is that even possible?
I'll go find him, you keep eating.- Paimon: Okay... Paimon'll catch up once she finishes!
- (Talk to Paimon, optional)
- Paimon: One more plate... Okay, this is the last one! Paimon swears!
- (Approach Varka)
- Varka: So, what's the hero who saved our savior and brought it back to camp doing in a corner like this?
Took the words right out of my mouth.
What're you doing drinking alone?- Varka: Heh... Truth is, what I've got in my cup is the most special of special brews. It can only be drunk alone...
- Varka: ...But since you've caught me, nothing for it. Here, have a cup.
...I knew it.
It's Apple Cider.- Varka: Got me! Just a joke. Not a drop of liquor on me right now. If you're thirsty for a real drink, go find Erminie later, she's got plenty in stock.
- Varka: A camp always needs to have one sober soul to guard their drunk comrades from things that go bump in the night. Those have been my standing orders since this expedition started.
- Varka: Rotten luck, eh? Just so happens that tonight, it's my turn to be that sober soul.
- Varka: ...So, on this night when they're all drunk, I can't be.
Was it really luck?
On the very day the Dandelion Wine was due to arrive?- Varka: Who knows? Maybe fate just gets a kick out of messing with us? If it'd come one day later, maybe I'd have been down there guzzling wine to my heart's content.
- Varka: But if it had come but one day later, maybe you'd have passed the camp by. Missed the feast. Never even had this chance to talk.
- Varka: Nobody can say what choices lead to what outcomes until the time comes.
- Varka: Just like when I decided to lead this expedition out of Mondstadt... never imagined I'd make it this far.
The reason you launched the expedition... was it to deal with the Wild Hunt?- Varka: ...That's how it turned out, aye. But when we marched, all I "knew" was this: An Abyssal storm was brewing up north, one that threatened to scour all of Teyvat.
- Varka: It took us some time to mobilize, but where would the enemy appear, and what form would they take?
- Varka: ...That was all a complete mystery to us when we set out. All we could do was gather intel as we marched, preparing for every contingency.
That's all you knew, and you still launched the expedition?
Didn't you say intelligence is the foundation of any campaign?- Varka: Ha! Quick study, aren't you? Alas, the enemy won't sit around twiddling their thumbs while we finish preparing.
- Varka: Every hour we hesitated, the Abyss was devouring the lives of countless people. The sooner we marched, the sooner we could change their fates.
- Varka: —That was all the intel we needed to launch this "expedition."
No wonder you're the Knight of Boreas...
That's the Knights of Favonius for you...- Varka: None of that formality, "Honorary Knight"! And you're no different. Your journey's also changed many people's fates.
- Varka: Be it Mondstadt back then, Dvalin... or Nod-Krai now, the expeditionary force... even my fate, too.
- Varka: The fact that we can sing around the bonfire, drinking and thinking about the future... None of that could've happened without your arrival, (Traveler).
...Am I really that amazing?- Varka: ...Hah, who's to say? Fate's fickle and hard to fathom, after all. But as long as you're alive, there's hope.
- Varka: The wine we didn't drink tonight, we can have tomorrow — the lads'll save my share. As long as we're still breathing, tomorrow'll bring more wine and laughter!
- Varka: So, cheers! To tomorrow! To hope!

Dialogue Set #1
- (Talk to Varka, Ekbert, Leifhelm, or Winfried at the Favonius Keep)
- Varka: Turn, left... turn, right!
- (Available if the player has experienced this dialogue before)
They haven't sobered up yet?
What's going on here, Varka?
- Varka: Oh, just some Knights of Favonius formation drills. These three overdid it last night, so I'm sobering them up.
- Varka: ...And rooting out the worst offender while I'm at it, whose grand prize will be 20 laps. The expeditionary force is allowed to drink liquor, but ground rules stand for when and how much you drink.
- Winfried: I—I only had a little bit!
- Ekbert: M—Me too!
- Varka: ...Save the excuses, prove it with your feet! Show me you can nail a picture-perfect parade-ground pivot while you're plastered!
- Leifhelm: Y—Yes Sir!
- Varka: ...Honorary Knight, feel like helping me get them cleaned up? [Note 1]
Sure, I'll try my hand!
- Varka: Right then — You lot hear that? This here is the Honorary Knight, so look alive!
- Varka: Attention! And— march!
- (Continues below)
I've actually got this thing I need to take care of...

Right turn!
About turn!
And...
- (While performing the drill)
Ekbert: Ohh... This is bad...
Leifhelm: Ugh... Not good...
Winfried: Ugh... I'm not doing so good...
- (Whenever one of them says an idle, they don't follow the order correctly)
- (After Condition missing)
- Varka: —At ease!
- Varka: Well, Honorary Knight? Who's the drunkest of the bunch?
The one on the left...
- Winfried: Wha—? No! I—I'm not drunk! Just... a bit... uh, dizzy...
- Varka: You know what's worse than being drunk? Being drunk and lying about it! 20 laps, and not one less!
- Winfried: I'm innocent, I swear! I didn't even drink the most...
- Varka: —But you still got hammered, didn't you? 20 laps, not one less! Keep at it 'til you can take on anything even when you're as drunk as a skunk!
- Ekbert: *pant*... Seems like I...
- Leifhelm: ...Got off easy this time?
- Varka: Ho, you two! You're both thinking, "Seems like I got off light this time," aren't ya? Saw you two staggering about earlier, didn't I?
- Varka: Twenty sets of strength drills with Anselm! And not a sip of booze 'til you're done!
- (Winfried runs twenty laps inside the camp, while Ekbert and Leifhelm do jumping jacks near the main tent)
The one in the middle...
- Ekbert: W—What!? Plastered... I never...! Just... kinda... uh, dizzy...
- Varka: You know what's worse than being drunk? Being drunk and lying about it! 20 laps, and not one less!
- Ekbert: Please, it wasn't me! On my life, I didn't drink the most...
- Varka: —But you still got hammered, didn't you? 20 laps, not one less! Keep at it 'til you can take on anything even when you're as drunk as a skunk!
- Winfried: *pant*... I guess I...

- (Ekbert runs twenty laps inside the camp, while Leifhelm and Winfried do jumping jacks)
The one on the right...
- Leifhelm: Me—? N—No! I'm not drunk! I'm just... out of it... Kinda...
- Varka: You know what's worse than being drunk? Being drunk and lying about it! 20 laps, and not one less!
- Leifhelm: Oh, no, no, you got the wrong man, honest!
- Varka: —But you still got hammered, didn't you? 20 laps, not one less! Keep at it 'til you can take on anything even when you're as drunk as a skunk!
- Winfried: *pant*... I guess I...

- Varka: Twenty sets of strength drills with Anselm! And not a sip of booze 'til you're done!
- (Leifhelm runs twenty laps inside the camp, while Ekbert and Winfried do jumping jacks)
Dialogue Set #2
Where'd he sneak off to...
- "Where did Grand Master Varka sneak off to this time?"
- (Talk to Anselm in front of the main tent at the Favonius Keep)
- Anselm: Where'd he sneak off to...
- (Available if the player has found Varka before)
Varka disappeared again, didn't he.
- Anselm: ...Ahem. Same as always, if you spot him anywhere, please give him a nudge to hurry up!
What is it this time? Did some cat or dog wander off again?
- Anselm: Nope, it's the Grand Master. He disappeared again.
Seriously? How does a full-grown man of his stature just disappear?- Anselm: He was like that even back in Mondstadt. Once the Knights' documents stacked higher than his head, there's a chance he'd disappear.
- Paimon: Sounds like an urban legend... Want us to help look for him?
- Anselm: Hmm... There aren't any urgent documents that require immediate attention at the moment. No need to go out of your way to look for him, he'll return when he's had enough rest.
- Anselm: But if you happen to see him anywhere, give him a nudge to hurry up!
- (Find Varka and talk to him)
- Varka: ...
(Hey, give him a shake!)
- Paimon: Vaaaarka! Time to get back to woooork~
- Varka: ...What, haven't you heard the saying, "don't wake someone pretending to be asleep"?
Isn't it, "Don't wake a sleepwalker"?
Isn't it, "You can't wake someone pretending to be asleep"?- Varka: Fine, it's the hunter who decides what to do with their prey... But next time, I'm napping somewhere harder to find!
- (Varka begrudgingly returns to the main tent)
(Let the man sleep...)
- Varka: ...*snore*... Thanks...
- (Talk to Varka again)
- Varka: Hey! Here to survey the aftermath of the "battle" last night, hunter?
- Varka: Figured that since Seamus and Frederica went back and Lohen and Mika are out, nobody'd find me...
- Varka: Looks like I can't get too complacent! My counter-recon skills are gonna need some work.
Bring it on, I'm always ready.
Finish your work before practicing those skills, okay?- Varka: Haha... Well, that's enough rest. Now, time to sort out this lot!
- (Talk to Anselm)
- Anselm: Thanks for bringing him back! Right, I've to make the most of him before he runs off again... Wring as much work out of him as I can...
Dialogue Set #3
- (Talk to Varka next to the campfire)
- Varka: ♪~
- (If the player extinguishes the campfire)
Ekbert: ?
- (Ekbert stops dancing and scratches his head in confusion)
- (If the player lights the campfire again)
-
- (Ekbert starts dancing again)
