This article is about the real Thirteen Flame-Chasers. For the simulation in the Elysian Realm, see Flame-Chasers (Elysian Realm).

What the last thirteen MANTISes of the MOTHs were collectively known as following the Promised Tragedy. They were irreplaceable assets to the organization, which warranted an independent establishment. For undisclosed reasons, every member was given a rank and a signet representing their title. The future of humanity weighed on the shoulders of the thirteen "living weapons".

— Thirteen Flame-Chasers Introduction[1]

The Flame-Chasers, also called the Thirteen Flame-Chasers or the Thirteen MANTISes,[2] is a group of thirteen MANTISes from MOTH who were the only surviving MANTISes following the Tragedy of Binding. The Herrscher of Binding's anti-Honkai powers were deadly to MANTISes, whose genes were fused with those of the Honkai Beasts, and the final battle against her ended with all super-soldiers but those thirteen being wiped out. The memories of all surviving thirteen MANTISes were uploaded to Golden Courtyard to guide future generations.

Formation

The Flame-Chasers were formed following the Tragedy of Binding, where all but thirteen of the MANTIS soldiers created by MOTH were killed. The group was founded by Elysia, who proposed that all thirteen join together to form the Thirteen Flame-Chasers. However, this proposition was rejected due to the MOTH higher-ups' objections to several of the would-be members and their reservations about handing these individuals a greater degree of power within MOTH. As an alternative, they offered a compromise to Elysia, where the Flame-Chaser system would move forward but with only five members instead of thirteen. These members were Elysia, Kevin, Vill-V, Su, and Hua.[2]

Of the eight who were deemed unsuitable, Aponia and Kosma were rejected due to the dangerous and volatile nature of their abilities. Issues of personality made both Kalpas and Mobius unsuitable as Flame-Chasers—Kalpas for his reputation as a ruthless killer and Mobius for her near non-existent sense of morality. Thanks to Sakura's past during the early power-struggles of MOTH, certain higher-ups did not wish to end up on the wrong end of her blade and thus were unwilling to allow her to be a Flame-Chaser. Eden, despite being a highly qualified MANTIS who was not the subject of controversy like several of the others, was rejected on the grounds that MOTH did "not need an individual without a future." Pardofelis, as a 2nd-generation MANTIS of little distinction, was entirely unknown to MOTH's leadership. Lastly, Griseo was deemed unsuitable because she was still just a small child.[2]

Although she admitted the reservations of Dr. MEI and the rest of MOTH leadership were reasonable and correct, the proposed solution of forming "the Five Flame-Chasers" was unacceptable to Elysia. She was adamant that it would be all or nothing and, in Hua's estimation, wished to fight for the rights of the eight more maligned MANTISes. As such, the Flame-Chasers were formed as a team of thirteen and the group was not sanctioned by MOTH.[2]

Structure

Each Flame-Chaser had a rank ranging from first to thirteenth selected by Elysia, the group's founder. While the rankings were ostensibly in order of strength, she considered many other factors and spent a whole afternoon determining them.[3] Not many of the Flame-Chasers truly cared about where they were placed.[4] Even so, the system was not meaningless, as it imposed necessary structure for managing the group.[3]

Upon the formation of the Flame-Chasers, Elysia ranked herself first,[5] expecting pushback from the others in favor of Kevin, who she placed second. She thought such a ranking was interesting and was curious about what reaction it would receive, however, this proved to be a miscalculation, as none voiced any objections. Not one to back down, Elysia prepared the gambit of resigning from the position on the very same day, leaving Kevin as the leader and taking the role of Deputy Chief and second-in-command for herself.[6]

Aponia, a powerful and potentially very dangerous psychic MANTIS, was ranked third. There was a story behind this placement, however, Elysia did not tell it to Raiden Mei, as she had not yet met Aponia at the time. Eden, Vill-V, Sakura, Kosma, and Pardofelis were ranked fourth, fifth, eighth, ninth, and thirteenth respectively. Elysia did not mention specific reasoning behind their rankings, but she did note that these five were the easiest for her to rank.[7] The thirteenth Flame-Chaser Pardofelis was notably a very poor fighter compared to most of the other twelve, and was the only member whose history with the MOTHs was so undistinguished that MOTH higher-ups were completely unaware of her at the time of the Flame-Chasers' formation.[2]

The seventh position was given to Su, who would maintain balance among the Flame-Chasers as the member placed directly in the middle.[8] The sixth Flame-Chaser, Kalpas, was another challenge for Elysia to rank. Given his well-earned reputation as a volatile and dangerous killer, there were many eyes on Kalpas and his placement. She ultimately gave him the sixth position. After Kalpas was Mobius. While Elysia did not dislike Mobius, she also did not wish to give her too much power within the group and thus placed her tenth.[7]

The youngest Flame-Chaser, Griseo, was the eleventh Flame-Chaser. There was a story behind her placement but, as with Aponia, Elysia did not disclose it to Mei because the pair had not yet met. Lastly, Hua was ranked twelfth for multiple reasons. Elysia claimed to Mei that ranking her twelfth was meant to shield her from the politics that surrounded the Flame-Chasers, given that she was among the youngest of the thirteen.[7] To Hua herself, Elysia claimed the position was Mobius' idea. As the designer of Hua's armor, the number twelve allegedly represented Mobius' initial idea for Hua's transforming armor.[4]

Simulation of the Flame-Chasers

All Flame-Chasers uploading their memories into Golden Courtyard (later as Elysian Realm) as an attempt to train future generations and telling the memories of the Past era of MANTIS who fought Honkai.[9][10] Their memories are being uploaded with SO-1129 Tech.[11] The first batch of Golden Courtyard simulations included Su, Sakura, Mobius, and Hua. All thirteen Flame-Chasers were completely uploaded in the second batch.[12]The behavior and memories of the Simulated Flame-Chasers are based on the last time the "real" Flame-Chasers uploaded their minds to the Golden Courtyard.[11] Each simulation also bears a Signet that are named after each Flame-Chaser’s ranking.[13]

Mei: So the ranking order has no actual meaning.
Elysia: It's not meaningful for your purposes. But there had to be some structure for managing the MOTHs.
Elysia: It was tough, but I tried to rank everyone based on my best judgment. Of course, I made it look legit and performance-based.

Mei: So you rank last in the group?
Hua: That's the way it should be, and not many of us really care about the rankings.
Mei: Su told me why he was ranked seventh. Does the number twelve have some special meaning to you?
Hua: Elysia said it was Mobius's idea.
Hua: She designed my armor. The number twelve represents her initial idea for transforming armor.

Mei: Oh... you must have been disappointed.
Elysia: Yeah! One of the few missteps in my life. But Elysia never surrenders — I prepared another trick.
Elysia: I resigned on the day of my appointment and left the top position to Kevin.

Elysia: Hua was still too young to be involved in politics, so I picked a safe spot for her — the twelfth.
Elysia: Kalpas was a headache. A lot of eyes were on him.
Elysia: I needed a balanced spot for this one. I thought hard about it and the sixth seemed right.
Elysia: The same with the tenth. I didn't hate her but I didn't want to give her too much power, and she was well aware of that.
