A MANTIS (Massively Augmented Neo-Tech Integrated Soldier; plural: MANTISes[1]) is a term used to describe a human from Previous Era whose genes were fused with a Honkai Beast's, allowing them to have their features/abilities.[2][3][4]

The idea of a human-Honkai hybrid has been further researched in the Current Era by various organizations, allowing more MANTIS-esque agents to be made.[5][6]

Note: For the purpose of this article, all characters with MANTIS-like characteristics or who have been called similar to them will be included on this page and may be referred as such, as they do not have an unique moniker. For example, in Chapter XXVIII, the English localization refers to Theresa as a MANTIS, while the original Chinese text is less direct; calling her "similar to a MANTIS" instead. This distinction is not made clear in languages besides English.[note 1]

Overview

Soldier Project was one of the many projects undertaken by the MOTHs to defeat the Honkai. It's involved extracting the DNA of powerful Honkai Beasts found in the Previous Era and inserting them into human soldiers using ICHOR (Intra-Chromosomal Honkai Gene Repeats), in order to grant them superhuman abilities and innate Honkai resistance. The subject of Project Soldier must have underwent Meta-Morph Surgery, and is afterwards known as a "Fusion Warrior" or "MANTIS".[2] The project was successful and was able to produce at least 16 known MANTISes by name, as well as many more unknown MANTISes who would perish in the battle against the Herrscher of Binding.[citation needed] The thirteen survivors of the "Tragedy of Binding" would join together to form an unsanctioned group of MANTISes known as the Thirteen Flame-Chasers under the guidance of Elysia, the group's founder and second-in-command.[7]

Similar technology to the MOTH's MANTIS Project would later be used in the Current Era.[8] World Serpent, a shadowy organization founded by the MANTIS scientist Mobius,[9] had a long tradition of using a different technology with similar effects to the MANTIS operation. Though it did not transform humans into a different species and had a much lower risk of side effects, the awakening of a stigma would cause a transformation similar to Active Honkai Reaction in individuals who underwent this procedure. Raven was among the World Serpent personnel who the technology was used on. Comparable technology was also used by Schicksal.[8] Theresa Apocalypse, a synthetic human being created by Schicksal's Otto Apocalypse through the combined DNA of the powerful human Valkyrie Kallen Kaslana and the Honkai Beast Vishnu,[10] was sometimes described as a MANTIS.[11]

General Powers

Meta-Morph ICHOR transformation is what qualifies a MOTH soldier to be called a MANTIS in the Previous Era. Meta-Morph ICHOR is the first ability that every MANTIS possesses. This transformation grants the MANTIS soldier the abilities of the Honkai Beast with which they have merged.[citation needed] The awakening of each MANTIS is different; usually, their bodies partially change into the Honkai Beast with which they combined.[2] The first person who achieved Meta-Morph ICHOR transformation was a young soldier named Hua.[12]

AHR (Active Honkai Reaction), previously called "Meta-Morph Overload" or "Over Meta-Morph," is the after-effect condition that comes as a result of the surgery, which is also the final form of the MANTISes that can be manually activated. It turns them into a beast-like form, partially resembling the Honkai Beast their genes are infused with, which most of the MANTISes cannot control.[citation needed] Kosma is the first person who unwillingly performed a Honkai transformation. The MOTHs originally called this transformation "Meta-Morph Overload." After Kosma's transformation, Mobius wanted to surpass the Meta-Morph surgery limit, doing experiments on herself in the "First Institute." Mobius managed to transform herself into a giant snake, albeit she ended up losing control of herself. After the incident in "First Institute," the MOTHs started calling this ability "Active Honkai Reaction."[13]

Technology

MOTH

The MOTH's method of creating MANTIS is called "Meta-Morph." A soldier who wants to become a MANTIS must undergo an operation called "Meta-Morph Surgery."[2]

Schicksal

Schicksal developing a method of making MANTIS similar to MOTH and World Serpent technology. Schicksal's method was engineered by Otto Apocalypse while he was developing a method to resurrect Kallen Kaslana. The method was cloning Kallen's DNA with a Honkai Beast named Vishnu. The clones were named as A3 Series, and successfully birthed Human-Honkai hybrids A-303 and A-310. Later, Otto named A-303 and A-310 as Amber and Theresa Apocalypse respectively.[8][14] Otto made the Blood Knight: Moonlight Battlesuit for Theresa so that she could activate her Vishnu genes inside her.[15]
