Wayland Murphy

Wayland Murphy is an NPC and the father of Yidhari Murphy.

Profile

Much like his wife, Angel, Wayland was dedicated to his research in order to find a way to help people never have to fear the Hollows. He loved his daughter, Yidhari, very much, to the point where he would sacrifice himself to find a route for his wife and daughter to escape when the Darkwater Research Center was engulfed by the Outer Ring Hollow during the Fall of the Old Capital.
Yidhari mentions he was a good father, and his former dream to become a Proxy is likely what inspired Yidhari to do the same when she grew up.

History

Though little of his past is known, he mentions that if he hadn't had changed majors to pursue his wife, Angel, he likely would've become a Proxy.^[1] Along with his wife, they would both dedicate themselves to researching ways to develop stronger anti-corruption medicine, so that people could enter the Hollows without fear. When Yidhari was seven, Angel and Wayland began working under TOPS at the Darkwater Research Facility in the Outer Ring, which required them to be away from home for weeks at a time, rarely seeing Yidhari over the course of the next three years. Unbeknownst to the pair, TOPS' interest in anti-corruption medicine was to serve their own purposes of bolstering and empowering their own private forces, and the necessity of staying so long away from home was because the work being done was illegal. When this came to light, Angel and Wayland resolved to end their research and return home to make up for the time they lost with Yidhari.

On Angel's birthday, Yidhari tried to give her a present, but was too late to catch the boat that took them from Port Elpis to the facility, so Grandpa Gu took her there himself. The family reunited there, with Wayland coming to pick Yidhari up, but it was on that day that Hollow Zero passed the Zenless Limit, and its activity caused the nearby Outer Ring Hollow to swallow the facility. With TOPS' executives having taken all of the safety gear to save themselves, the Murphys were left stranded in the Hollow with no way out. To make matters worse, Yidhari, who was already more vulnerable to corruption being a child, inhaled ether particles that accelerated her own corruption.

Wayland and Angel would try to treat Yidhari, but to no avail as her condition worsened. It was then that Angel decided to inject Yidhari with a special serum, one that ended up giving her the power to see the history of a Hollow. Realizing that they needed to escape, Wayland decided to scout ahead to find an escape route. Since TOPS had taken all of the protective gear, Wayland decided to use as much anti-corruption medicine as he could to press on, but this came at the cost of shortening his own lifespan as he worked to find an escape route. He eventually found the way to the exit, and sent the coordinates of the extraction route to Angel and Yidhari, but when the two reached the rendezvous point, he was nowhere to be found, having said his last words in a call to his wife.^[2] Angel then took Yidhari to escape, with no time on hand to even mourn Wayland's passing. Eventually, his and Angel's sacrifices would end up saving Yidhari's life as she managed to survive the event and was found by Pompey and Mors at the edge of the Hollow. Her parent's dreams would later become Yidhari's dreams as well, as she grew up to become a Proxy herself in order to guide people in the Hollows.
