Alara

Alara is a quest-exclusive NPC who appears in the World Quest Lion's Celerity in Series A Long Day in the Mountains: Chapter 2 - Hell.

Profile

Alara was living in Sumeru as an Ascetic of the Age of Silence when he became one of the "Uplifted," people chosen to be preserved as living memories in the Temple of Space. Unable to shed his desires, he has been trapped inside the Apathic Interval ever since and cannot remember how much time has passed.^[1]

During the World Quest Lion's Celerity in Series A Long Day in the Mountains: Chapter 2 - Hell, the Traveler is sent back to the Apathic Interval by Melanta, during which they have a nightmare of Melanta's confrontations with three Uplifted, one of which is Alara. While gathering Deathshards so Dex can help them escape the Apathic Interval, the Traveler and Istoria free Alara from his prison. Along with Zeitlind, the four manage to escape the Apathic Interval and return to the Temple of Space, although Alara notes that this is first time leaving the Apathic Interval (Heaven of Nothingness). Once they arrive in front of the Pillar Hall Central Zone, Alara introduces himself and disappears afterwards.

• Alara's lines make several references to Chinese Buddhist terms:
  • He introduces himself as an Ascetic (Chinese: 行者 "practitioner,") a term often used for entry-level practitioners of Chinese Buddhism. The English use of "Ascetic" is likely derived from the Sanskrit term śramaṇa.
  • His mentions of the "state of no-thought" (Chinese: 无想定), "Heaven of Nothingness" (Chinese: 无想天), and "Unthinking Heaven of Evil" (Chinese: 无想恶天) are related to the real-life Buddhist concept of asaṃjñi samāpatti (Chinese: 无想定), or "meditative concentration with no thought." In heretical Buddhist teachings, practitioners believe that by practicing this, they can reach the Heaven of No-Thought (Chinese: 无想天) (also known as the Formless Realm) and attain nirvana;^[2] however, other Buddhist teachings state that this is not the highest level of highest level of enlightenment a person can reach, which is reflected by Alara's comments on the Heaven of Nothingness (represented by the Apathic Interval) being "truly hell."
