Summary

Prologue: Magic Mountain

The Traveler and Paimon approach a crowd gathered in the north of Dornman Port, where a man named Mann warns people not to ascend the mountain after encountering a "ghost" at the Old Sanatorium Site the night before. While patrolling the area with his dog Hauptmann, he saw a young woman standing before a grave bearing her exact likeness.

Intrigued, the Traveler and Paimon investigate the sanatorium and meet the woman at the graveyard. She introduces herself as Zeitlind and explains that she is searching for her older sister, who disappeared while staying at the sanatorium. The gravestone turns out to belongs to her sister, who looks just like her. Although they search the area together, they find no relevant clues regarding her sister's fate. Suddenly, the sky turns red and a towering angelic automaton identifying himself as the Watcher Nihilita appears. After trapping Zeitlind within red cubes, he asks the Traveler to journey to the Temple of Space and free it from its "inverted fate." He also entrusts them with a juvenile Watcher named Dex, who will aid them in the trials ahead.

Upon arriving at the temple, Zeitlind is freed and the group meets Istoria, who explains that the Temple of Space was created by the God of Space. After her disappearance, the other Watcher, Melanta, took control of the temple and began terrorizing its inhabitants. Istoria asks them for help and they make their way to the Memory Core, freeing Josephus and witnessing an inhabitant being hunted by Domain Keepers. There, Istoria reveals that Zeitlind's sister, Hilda, had been in the temple before and gotten to know the inhabitants.

The group also learns that the suitcase Zeitlind carries contains belongings of her sister that she intended to say goodbye to. When a Domain Keeper steals the suitcase and scatters its contents throughout the temple's three exhibition spaces, the Traveler and Paimon offer to help recover the items while freeing the temple's inhabitants from Melanta's control.

Chapter 1: Paradise

Long Live Life

The Traveler, Paimon, and Zeitlind arrive at Luyang Academy to find that its people have been trapped within paintings and reduced to ink blots. After rescuing a painter called Daozi, who mistakes Zeitlind for her sister Hilda, they gradually restore the academy to its original state. In a room, Zeitlind finds one of the items from her suitcase: A photograph of her sister in front of Wangshu Inn during a trip to Liyue. While attempting to free the Abode of Resplendent Talent, Melanta interferes through an illusion of "Maukie."

After restoring the academy, they meet Bosch, who reveals that he and Daozi taught Hilda how to paint during her stay with them. The group is shown a still life of watermelons painted by Hilda and titled "Long Live Life." Although Yoshitoshi suggests she keep the painting, Zeitlind refuses, wanting it to remain preserved in the temple. When leaving the academy, Istoria awaits them and shares that he once discussed philosophy with Hilda and tried to strengthen her will to live. Zeitlind thanks him and reveals that she found her sister’s tombstone.

Counterfeit Classics

Near the Mahavaipulya Chamber, the group encounters Calcerius, Okikuni, and Yu Huangyi, who had been pressed into paper slips and trapped in between pages. Zeitlind is mistaken for Raumhilda once more and the they ask for help. After being freed, Yu Huangyi accompanies them into the chamber. While restoring the area with Dex's help, the group recovers another item from Zeitlind's suitcase: A stack of letters Hilda wrote to Zeitlind during her stay at the sanatorium.

After a joint effort they free the chamber and its inhabitants from Melanta's influence. When leaving the chamber, they reunite with Istoria again, who explains that defeating Melanta requires reaching the Atrium of Suchness by constructing the "Path to the Heavens," a process that demands the sacrifice of all one’s memories.

Unofficial Chronicle of the Desert Pavilion

In the Desert Pavilion, the group meets Venipi, who recognizes Zeitlind as Raumhilda's younger sister. Together, they resolve the pavilion’s crisis, where many inhabitants have been transformed into sand, by defeating the Suppression Type Keepers and their leader, the Punisher of Gomorrah. They liberate all the inhabitants and Zeitlind finds another item from her suitcase: An amethyst brooch that once belonged to Raumhilda. After leaving the Desert Pavilion, the group meets Istoria once again, who tells them more about Melanta and Nihilita, as well as the meaning of their names.

A Day the Grand Temple Inscribed with Ages

After recovering all three items from the freed areas, the group reunites with Istoria at the Memory Core to discuss how Zeitlind can return to the surface. Istoria expresses his belief that Raumhilda may still be alive and that her grave could be empty. Zeitlind does not share his hopeful thinking and tells him of her and Hilda's past struggles, as well as how deeply Hilda was affected by her fiancé abandoning her. The group ultimately concludes that the only way forward is to confront Melanta.

Chapter 2: Hell

As they try to leave the Memory Core, the sky and all the temple's structures turn red as Melanta is shown inside the Atrium of Suchness. Istoria, Dex, Zeitlind, and the Traveler are engulfed by red cubes and cast into the Apathic Interval, a transitional space where individuals chosen to be uplifted to the Temple of Space must relinquish all of their desires before entering. The Traveler and Dex find themselves alone and continue on. With Dex's help, they destroy the Maranasati Caskets and rescue Istoria, Zeitlind, and a man named Alara. By collecting three appearing Deathmuse Shards with Dex, they manage to escape without forgoing their desires and return to the temple. Upon returning to the Temple of Space, they are puzzled to find that Paimon was not drawn into the Interval with them.

Chapter 3: Judgment

Upon returning to the Memory Core, Istoria reveals that Hilda had also once been sent to the temple and, upon witnessing the suffering caused by Melanta, chose to confront him herself. Although Istoria tried to stop her, Hilda sacrificed her memories to create the Path to the Heavens and met Melanta in the Atrium of Suchness. No one knew what the two discussed, but afterward Melanta destroyed part of the Path and Hilda departed the temple.[2]

As the group seeks to confront Melanta themselves, it becomes clear that restoring the Path to the Heavens requires someone to sacrifice their memories once more. Istoria volunteers to give up his memories but the Traveler and Zeitlind convince him that his knowledge is too valuable. Ultimately, Zeitlind chooses to take on the burden herself. Following the same path her sister once did, she allows the group to reach Melanta and bring an end to his tyranny, offering up her memories.

They traverse the Corridor of Nothingness and the Traveler witnesses some of the dreams the sisters shared. Ultimately, they reach the Atrium of Suchness and the Traveler confronts Melanta. When asked, he cannot explain the Traveler's Sibling's fate and becomes upset when the Traveler mentions Nihilita, calling him a traitor. He reveals to Zeitlind that he and her sister failed to reach an accord back then, and that she promised her younger sister would one day return and defeat him.

After being defeated by the Traveler in battle, Melanta finally understands why Nihilita left: all creations were free the moment Asmoday left. He admits that his actions, including exiling "Maukie" and severing the Path to the Heavens, have triggered his self-destruction. Zeitlind tries to help Melanta and asks him why the sanatorium on Windrest Peak is cursed. After answering her question, he justifies his deeds as an attempt to "correct" others, confesses his jealousy of Nihilita’s freedom, and his desire for his creator’s approval. He ultimately self-destructs, addressing his final words to Nihilita.

After the temple is freed, they return to Istoria and Zeitlind says her goodbyes as she will lose all her memories upon returning to the surface and decides that her epitath should read "To be continued." Upon returning to the sanatorium, her memories fade, and the Traveler and Paimon help her begin anew while reminding her that her sister is still somewhere out in the world.
