Lore
The Apathic Interval is a transitional space where individuals are first sent to during the process of being uplifted to the Temple of Space, where they are preserved as living memories. It was created by Asmoday alongside the rest of the temple, and individuals were brought there by the Watchers Nihilita and Melanta, who could move freely in it.[1] After Asmoday disappeared, Ronova installed the Maranasati Caskets to guard the area.[2]
In order to leave the Interval and proceed to the Temple of Space, individuals must attain a "state of complete emptiness." This is usually accomplished through meditation and the control of one's thoughts, which necessitates relinquishing all desires. Depending on the individual, this process can take anywhere from a few years to several centuries.[1] This transformation is radical, often altering a person's entire personality and preventing them from obtaining Visions.[3] For instance, Calcerius, a Remurian, lost his faith in Phobos while undergoing this process.[4]
During the World Quest Lion's Celerity in Series A Long Day in the Mountains: Chapter 2 - Hell, the Traveler, Istoria, Zeitlind, and Dex, a juvenile Watcher, are cast into into the Apathic Interval. By destroying the Maranasati Caskets and collecting Deathmuse Shards with Dex, they manage to escape without forgoing their desires. Upon returning to the Temple of Space, they are puzzled to find that Paimon was not drawn into the Interval with them.[1]
Gameplay Notes
- The sea of red cubes surrounding the platforms is called "The Unbroken Sea" and can only be traversed with Dex's help.[2]
