Summary
Act I - Up! Toward Homecoming Wings
"Make your way to the villages and towns and seek kinship with the humans..."
"The world of the fae is rife with a sorrow you do not understand."
Once upon a time, a young Linnea caught the faint, lilting refrains of a strange little tune.
Many years later, the echoes of that song have finally found her once again.
- The Championship Begins
The Traveler and Paimon pay a visit to Katheryne at Nasha Town, asking if there were any commissions available. Katheryne tells them that there hasn't been any notable commissions. This does remind her of an event being held by the Frostmoon Scions, who approached her for a large amount of supplies for their "Spirit Envoy Championship." The event is meant to improve human-animal bonds through training, as the animals selected for the event are trained to handle hardship and disasters. This event was traditionally closed to outsiders, but it is now open to all with a hefty prize. The Traveler suggests having Paimon participate, but Katheryne tells them that in a previous competition, someone entered with an extremely rare and powerful partner that the rules were changed to only allow common animal species and their variants.
Paimon wonders if anyone they knew would be interested in participating, and Katheryne suggests speaking to their advisors for help. She is surprised to learn the guild actually has them, and Katheryne explains that one of their top advisors had just returned from a trip. The advisor spends most of her time around Speranza giving lectures, so Paimon decides to put them to the test.
Arriving at the restaurant, they find the advisor overseeing a class, with the topic being food. The two let themselves in and Paimon catches Linnea's attention with her knowledge, impressing the advisor. She then dismisses the class and the two approach her. Linnea becomes enamored by Paimon and tries to pet her, resulting in a chase until she gets behind the Traveler. Linnea apologizes for getting carried away and asks the two how they met. The Traveler recalls their encounter, prompting Linnea to plan a trip there herself until Paimon tells her she was one of a kind. The Traveler then asks about the competition, and Linnea introduces her partner as Lumi, a Jack Frost fae from the northern tundra. She explains that Lumi is a unique Jack Frost and was bullied for her differences. She found the fae, who stuck with her ever since, and Linnea has been trying to figure out what made Lumi special.
As Paimon wonders who their animal creature will be, Aguara arrives and tells them he wants to join the competition. Aguara and Lumi play with each other briefly before they head to the venue to sign up. They discover Mualani and Itto, having brought their respective companions, Mamala and Crimson Staff. Mualani had learned of Linnea after she visited Natlan, while Itto had arrived with funds that the entire gang pooled. Mualani finds the gang vaguely familiar until Itto mentions Kuki Shinobu. Shinobu had also visited Natlan, namely the Flower-Feather Clan for their trials, with Chasca remarking that she was a natural. It suddenly dawns to her that as a deputy, Itto must be even stronger and Mualani tells Mamala to be prepared for a tough competition.
Linnea and the Traveler sign up for the competition, drawing their lots on the next day. The Traveler draws against Itto, while Linnea and Lumi go against Ilze and her companion, a Floating Hydro Fungus named Iku-Turso. During the match, Itto also sends Ushi at Aguara, resulting in him being disqualified for using two companions. Meanwhile, Linnea overpowers her competition, while someone watches her in contempt. She then asks them to go with her to Speranza for a meal.
- Twice Upon a Gaze
At Speranza, Linnea and the Traveler ask Jurva to prepare them a large meal. As he goes off to make their order, Linnea explains to the Traveler that she considered Speranza her home after her parents departed. Paimon believes they had died, but she clarifies that they are still alive and had just left the area. She then tells them about the wings on her head, revealing her status as a changeling due to her unnatural features. In spite of her status, her parents continued to support her. Jurva finishes their order and explains that Linnea used to be their boss until she grew up and had to leave. Linnea also reveals her dream to learn more about Lumi's origins and her birth parents. She does not recall much outside of a lullaby, which she felt was meant to discourage her from going after her past.
In spite of this, Linnea traveled to the tundra but quickly felt something wrong, with every instinct telling her to leave. She found this odd and assumed it was because she was a bird fae, but she vows to get to the bottom of it one day. She then changes the conversation back to a more cheerful mood and finish the meal. As Aguara and Lumi play, Linnea suggests getting some practice in. After a short session, Linnea finds both evenly matched, but she also finds it more peculiar that she couldn't predict their next move. She asks how they met, and the Traveler tells her. Linnea is amazed and wishes to go on a journey with Lumi, but not until she fully learns her past.
The group goes their separate ways, with the Traveler heading to the Flagship for a rest. They also discover Itto there, who was hired by the staff to serve as a bouncer for drunk patrons. He does just that, scaring one off when he tries to demand compensation from Paavo. The next day, they return to the venue to draw their next lot, matching against Haniyyah and Fluffy the Flower King, a Sumpter Beast. The Traveler and Aguara defeat Haniyyah and Fluffy, who asks them not to lose.
In the quarter-finals, the Traveler goes against Mualani, which worries Aguara. Paimon then suggests giving him a title before their next match. The Traveler and Aguara defeat Mualani in spite of her tactics, catching up with Linnea. She tells them that a new competitor, Celaeno, has joined and is currently facing against Jahoda and her companion, a Chic Badger named Reed Miller XIII. Linnea is shocked to discover that Celaeno's companion is a Radiant Bladehorn named Haemus, given how aggressive Radiant Beasts were. Celaeno predicts the badger's attack and has Haemus parry it. In the aftermath of the battle, the strong currents blow Celaeno's hat off, revealing her to be a fae, much to Linnea's shock. As Linnea approaches her and asks her questions, Celaeno walks off, finding the moment painful. Linnea then faints, and the Traveler and Jahoda bring her to Lauma. Lauma tells them that she just needs to rest.
Linnea comes to and finds Lumi outside and tries to speak to her to no avail. She then finds herself at the venue against Celeano and loses, much to her annoyance as she tries to pinch herself. Linnea is brought into a series of dreams that progressively worsen over time, before she returns at her "home" and discovers that Celaeno is her sister. Celaeno tells her to go to the tundra with her one last time to say goodbye to their parents, explaining that everything she's "dreaming" is actually the future. Linnea finally wakes up, explaining what she saw and believes that she needs to find Celaeno for answers. Aguara, having picked up her scent, asks them to follow him.
- Tread the Right Path
Returning to Nasha Town, the group follows Aguara, who leads them to the Flagship. Linnea demands Celaeno to open the door, who warns her that her curiosity will lead to a path of regret. Celaeno tells her that they are one of the less common fae known as the Augury Birds, who are able to foresee their own future and less than five exist, including both of them. Celeano tells her that it was impossible for them to change their fate, which prompts the Traveler to recall Vedrfolnir's words regarding the same situation. The Augury Birds lived with this burden until Linnea was born, with her parents deciding to have her live among humans so their abilities could be delayed. Linnea then asks about the human they swapped, and Celaeno tells them that she was fine, as she had a rare disease that only the fae could cure. Eventually, her birth parents came for her and they moved to Snezhnograd. Linnea then asks about everything she said to her, and Celeano tells her that she doesn't like her, forcing Linnea to guess that she was jealous of her.
Celeano admits that she would have been in Linnea's place had she been born a few years later and made a negative image of her in her mind. But when she came to Nod-Krai to see her, she found that Linnea was desperate to learn about her past and how it tore her, making her realize that she didn't want to see her suffer. Linnea accepts Celeano and even finds herself comforting her before asking how she bonded with Haemus. She tells her that Haemus had been separated from its parents and that it stayed with the family ever since. Celeano then tells her that she'll win the match and that Linnea would be unable to alter fate.
Uneased at their next match, the Traveler and Paimon decide to take a walk to the venue, discovering Linnea and Lumi training for their upcoming match. As Aguara and Lumi train, the Traveler asks Linnea about the meaning of fate, and she gives her own perspective on it. As the two finish their session and prepare for the semifinals, with the Traveler facing Viliana and her partner, a Snow Fox named Gorynishche. Aguara defeats the snow fox, while Linnea and Celeano begin their match. In spite of their training, Haemus appears to defeat Lumi, but Lumi recovers and suddenly grows in size. It deflects Haemus' blades, sending them flying at spectators, but the Traveler stops them from getting harmed. Lumi then tries to pummel the duo, but Linnea intervenes and pulls on her hat before Lumi returns to normal. As Lumi dejectedly floats to Linnea, Linnea instead thanks her, as she now realized her distinction; her consumption of Geo was what made her different from other Jack Frosts, and she would just need to find one with the same preferences as her.
Celeano and Haemus approach Linnea, the former asking why she had held back. Linnea told them that she wasn't, as they would've been in serious danger if they did. Celeano then wonders if Linnea had truly defied fate, as the future she saw went blank when Lumi's hammer was about to fall on them. Linnea tells Celeano her answer; while the future was likely set, it didn't mean she had to accept it as is. In preparation for the final, Linnea suggests taking a trip to Natlan to help improve Aguara's combat proficiency, as it was too weak to fight Haemus at its current state. As Linnea and the Traveler go to sleep, Little One appears to help train Aguara for their match. Aguara shows off its new skills and a large amount of Grainfruit. As Paimon and Linnea wonder who helped him, the Traveler notices a Saurian looking at them from a cliff and realizes that it was their former companion.
The Traveler defeats Celeano and are crowned the champions of the tournament, which concludes with a photo ops of the quarterfinalists; the Traveler states that Aguara's strength came from hard work and friendship, Celeano reveals she wishes to release Haemus into the wild, Linnea accepts whatever fate has and Viliana enjoyed her time in Nod-Krai. At the Speranza, Celeano bids farewell to Linnea, promising to tell their parents how she's doing. She also reminds her that it would only be a matter of time before her abilities would fully develop, but Linnea is unfazed. Celeano tells her to write if she wishes to see her and that she'll give their address when she comes to the tundra.
