Nahida/Storyline

Nahida (Persian: ناهید Nāhid), also known by her divine name Buer and as Lesser Lord Kusanali, is the current God of Wisdom and Dendro Archon of The Seven, presiding over Sumeru.^[6]

The youngest of The Seven, she was created from the purest branch of Irminsul by the previous Dendro Archon, Greater Lord Rukkhadevata, to be her successor.^[5]

After all memories of Greater Lord Rukkhadevata were erased from Teyvat, Nahida is believed by all, including herself, to have always been the original Dendro Archon.^[5]

Despite her status as Sumeru's Archon, Nahida has little power over her nation's affairs. Due to her isolation inside the Sanctuary of Surasthana, no one in Sumeru other than the Sages of Sumeru Akademiya has seen her since her birth 500 years ago. The Sages rarely speak to Nahida, and rule over Sumeru in her place.^[7]

Although Nahida is isolated from the outside world, she is capable of limited contact with it. As the First Akasha Terminal, her consciousness is linked to the Akasha System, not only giving her access to the Akasha's stores of knowledge, but also allowing her to possess people by occupying their consciousnesses, although out of respect for her people's free will she only chooses to possess the bionic puppet Katheryne.^[7] She is also capable of appearing in the dreams of people across Sumeru.^[8]

Nahida frequently intervenes in the lives of people across Sumeru, having once saved Aaru Village from an earthquake by channeling her power through the mad scholars exiled there.^[9] However, since her influence is subtle, stories about her are relegated to rumors and urban legends; even the Akademiya's sages cannot confirm her activities in the outside world.^[10]

Because of her isolation, most people know little about Nahida, even inside her own nation. Sumeru Akademiya promotes the worship of the deceased Greater Lord Rukkhadevata over Nahida, causing most people to be apathetic towards her and worship Greater Lord Rukkhadevata instead. However, Nahida does have a few followers, especially among the Grand Bazaar in Sumeru City, who celebrate her birthday with the Sabzeruz Festival.^[11] "Lesser Lord Kusanali" is also considered to be a term of endearment for the archon.^[12]

As the Dendro Archon of The Seven, Nahida possesses a seat among the Divine Thrones of Celestia, granting her access to the Dendro Authority.^[13] She previously also possessed the Dendro Gnosis before it was given to Dottore in exhange for intel about the false sky.^[5]

Personality

When the Traveler and Paimon first encountered Nahida during the Sabzeruz Festival samsara, she was an elusive and secretive figure. Until then, she had chosen to leave the city's governance to the Sages, but decided to intervene when they stepped out of line. Her self-esteem was significantly negatively affected due to the way the sages treated her. However, after the Sages' downfall and the cleansing of Irminsul, many of these negative traits diminished or disappeared. Now, she openly roams the city in her free time, engaging with her people and exhibiting a much more cheerful outlook on herself.

Despite her earlier struggles, Nahida rarely expressed her sadness when speaking to others. She consistently maintains a gentle and kind demeanor and treats everyone as equals. However, she acknowledges that her social skills and understanding of human interaction need improvement, which is evident in her slightly eccentric speech and behavior. She has a fondness for analogies and often uses them to explain concepts to others. She believes in guiding people to discover answers on their own, especially regarding complex truths, rather than simply providing the answers. This tendency leads her to incorporate a mix of analogies and subtle clues into her conversations to steer people into reaching the conclusions she hopes they would.

As the God of Wisdom, Nahida's most prominent qualities are her exceptional intelligence, extensive knowledge, and strategic planning. She is capable of devising thorough, multi-layered plans and can even be somewhat manipulative when necessary, as demonstrated during her dealings with Dottore. Perhaps most notably, Nahida excels at discerning when her intelligence is required and when kindness is needed—or when both are appropriate.

Appearance

Nahida is a short, child-like girl with what resemble elven ears. The ends of her hair are tinted a different color in accordance with the other Archons, with hers going from light gray to green — signifying Dendro.

Nahida can also appear as different avatars; she can inflitrate the consciousness of those wearing Akasha Terminals, including non-human entities, such as bionic puppets.

In her depiction in Sumeru Statues of The Seven, she is shown to be wearing a similar cloak and draping clothing similar to the other known Archon statues. Her small frame is also shown sitting on a huge leaf, an attribute owing to her mantle as the Dendro Archon.

History

Past

During the cataclysm five hundred years ago, the previous Dendro Archon, the Greater Lord Rukkhadevata, perished after trying to completely remove the forbidden knowledge from Irminsul.^[5] Before her demise, she took the purest branch from Irminsul to be her successor, that being Nahida, who then ascended to the position of Archon.^[5][14] The day of Nahida's birth is celebrated in Sumeru as the Sabzeruz Festival.^[15]

Nahida is first mentioned in Chapter I by Zhongli and Ganyu as the God of Dendro, where the Traveler learns that she is the youngest of The Seven. After the events of Chapter II, Yae Miko suggests that the Traveler venture to Sumeru next and seek Lesser Lord Kusanali out.^[12]

It is heavily implied that Nahida talked to Traveler and Paimon during Summertime Odyssey, first by intercepting the Dodoco Communication signal and then by speaking directly into the Traveler's mind.^{[Note 1]} She says she is curious about the Traveler and that they may meet in the future.

She first makes a proper appearance in the Archon Quest Chapter III: Act II - The Morn a Thousand Roses Brings, where the Traveler discovers her as Nahida while stuck in a samsara created by the Akademiya sages and trying to break out of it. After they manage to dispel the samsara, Nahida remains in the Akasha System to try and figure out what had caused the Sages to step out of line with their latest experiment.

While possessing the bionic puppet Katheryne, Nahida reappears in the Archon Quest Chapter III: Act III - Dreams, Emptiness, Deception, where she plots to have the Grand Sage's assistant Setaria become a mole in the Akademiya. This plan ultimately fails, however, as Il Dottore ambushes Nahida, alongside the Traveler and Paimon, with a group of citizens whose Akasha Terminals he hijacked to put them under his control. Nahida subdues the citizens by taking over their Akasha Terminals, but this results in Il Dottore deducing that she is the God of Wisdom. Eventually, Nahida reunites with the Traveler and Paimon at Pardis Dhyai, but after seeing Haypasia's vision of a "god's" memories, a group of Eremites corner them. The Katheryne puppet is impaled by an Eremite; nevertheless, Nahida escapes by switching consciousnesses with the Traveler momentarily. In the end, Tighnari reveals that Nahida told him that Il Dottore has found a way to trap her consciousness in the Sanctuary of Surasthana.

During the Archon Quest Jnagarbha Day in Chapter III: Act V - Akasha Pulses, the Kalpa Flame Rises, the Traveler is imprisoned in a confinement room. From said room, the Traveler uses their modified Akasha terminal to connect with Nahida's consciousness, and after much effort are able to overcome her fear and self-doubt to wake her up inside her vessel, Nahida. Afterwards, the Traveler goes to the Sanctuary of Surasthana in order to free her vessel. Once freed, she apologizes to the Traveler for causing them so much trouble, and decides to block the Sages' access to the Akasha system before vowing to make them pay for their crimes.

Later on, Nahida is able to modify the Traveler's Akasha into an upgraded version which she claims will help them in their travels. She also manages to discover the location of the false god. Despite her lack of combat abilities as noted by the false god, she supports the Traveler by trapping the false god in a Samsara-like loop, allowing her and the Traveler to analyze the false god's abilities and attempt to find his weaknesses. After 168 loops, Nahida asks for help from all the people of Sumeru and gives all of their combined knowledge, as well as the combat experience from the loops, to the Traveler through their enhanced Akasha Terminal, allowing them to defeat the false god. She then takes Scaramouche into her custody.^[5]

After retrieving the Electro Gnosis from the false god, Nahida uses the power of both the Electro and Dendro Gnoses at her disposal to send both her and the Traveler into Rukkhadevata's final memory. The Traveler explains to Nahida about forbidden knowledge, which allows Nahida to better understand the corruption of Irminsul and King Deshret. In the final memory, Nahida and the Traveler meet Rukkhadevata, who explains that she too was a branch of the Irminsul tree — and just like her, Nahida is the purest branch of herself that would eventually grow and become the Dendro Archon's next incarnation. Rukkhadevata also reveals that she has been corrupted to a level which cannot be fixed and that the only way to expunge her corruption from Irminsul would be by erasing all memories of herself from the tree. Nahida reluctantly accepts that this is the only way to save Irminsul and regretfully erases Greater Lord Rukkhadevata from Teyvat's history, changing the chronology of the entire story retroactively.^[5]

When she and the Traveler return from the journey, Nahida's memories are completely changed and rewritten to now fit a new chronology, in which she has been the Dendro Archon since the end of the Archon War, and that at some point during the cataclysm, she lost her memories before being imprisoned in the sanctuary by the Sages of Sumeru. As the Traveler is conflicted on whether to tell her the truth or not, Dottore incapacitates the Traveler and Paimon and approaches Nahida to directly negotiate with her for the Electro Gnosis. He reminds her that he is far stronger then her, as her combat abilities are currently lacking. In return, she threatens to destroy the Electro Gnosis, suggesting that such an event could trigger the intervention of the Heavenly Principles. Dottore agrees that this is a possibility, and relents. However, realizing that it is better that the Electro Gnosis not remain in Sumeru, Nahida agrees to give Dottore the Gnosis under the condition that he destroy all of his segments except for the one currently talking to her. After some back-and-forth he agrees and destroys his other segments — which Nahida is able to verify — and she gives him the Gnosis in exchange. Dottore then makes an offer for Nahida's Dendro Gnosis as well, offering to tell her the "truth" of this world regarding the Descenders and revealing to her that the sky is fake. In return for this information, Nahida willingly hands Dottore her Dendro Gnosis.^[5]

Several days later, during a party set up by the Traveler and their companions, Nahida takes control of the Traveler's body and uses it to personally thank all their companions who have helped her escape. The next day the Traveler meets with Nahida in the Sanctuary, where upon learning of their intentions to go to Fontaine, she tells them about the Hydro Archon Focalors. She also reveals that while looking through the information within Irminsul, she discovered that the Traveler's Sibling was recorded in it, marking them as being from Teyvat, despite the Traveler's memories and knowledge indicating that this is not the case. She also learned of the Fatui's list of four "Descenders", a list of visitors from outside of Teyvat. The Traveler's sibling is not one of them, while the Traveler is the fourth Descender. She suspects the Heavenly Principles to be first Descender but does not know who the second and third one could be, and finishes by saying that she will help the Traveler in their journey when she has the time.^[5]

Making use of her new freedom, Nahida would come across the interest group "A Moment of Dreams," where people would share their dreams now that the Akasha System was no longer in use. However, people began to recall their dreams with unusual clarity, prompting her and the Traveler to investigate. They soon discover that a Kshahrewar scholar, Moseis, had created his own version of the Akasha in order to create memories of his deceased wife, Emira. The two put a stop to his plans, during which Nahida extracts his consciousness with a special Knowledge Capsule and hands it to the matra Sitt for insertion back into Moseis' body. As the matra left, Nahida tells the Traveler that she had felt a "warmth" in her dream which shaped her to who she was today and hopes to follow her own advice and look towards the future.^[16]

Scaramouche later recovers from the battle and Nahida asks him to help investigate Irminsul on her behalf; this was actually a plan to reveal the truth of the Tatarasuna incident to him. While the plan worked and Scaramouche realized that his second betrayal was orchestrated by Dottore, he took extreme measures to give his former friends a new lease on life by erasing himself from Irminsul.^[17] When the Traveler realized what he had done and checked the aftermath of his actions, they returned to Nahida, who had also failed to remember him. The Traveler explains Scaramouche to her, and Nahida managed to discover a backup of his memories she had made which would be unaffected by Irminsul changes. She then explains his past to his current iteration, a nameless wanderer, which he accepts.^[18] Following the successful restoration of his memories, Nahida encourages him to look towards his future rather than wallowing in the past and suggests the Traveler rename him. After making his new name, Nahida would keep the Wanderer in Sumeru for the time being.^[19]

Following the acquisition of Sachin's diadem, Nahida, wishing to honor his wishes, has the Wanderer join the competition by enrolling him into the Vahumana Darshan. He was to intervene if Sachin's successor was unable to handle his research or brought more pain to others. Nahida also hoped that the experience would help the Wanderer understand humanity better, though this appeared to have no effect. Since Sachin's successor, Kaveh, had no interest in spreading his work, Nahida would seal it back up, but would give it to others who wanted to follow in his footsteps. She then told the Wanderer that she hoped that his enrollment in Vahumana would help him deal with his past and would personally review his final thesis herself.^[20]

Later on, Nahida would run into the Traveler again, revealing that there was a duty she was supposed to fulfill but could not remember, pulling out a Fire Seed which she also could not recall. During the conversation, a fungi appeared, prompting a nearby guard to drive it away. Nahida stopped the guard, sensing the fungi needed assistance and followed it, discovering another unconscious fungi. She soon realized that the unconscious fungi was actually an elemental lifeform, explaining the origins of fungi creatures to the Traveler. Nahida used her powers to revitalize the fungi, who explained why they were in Sumeru and had her accompany them to a Withering Zone. Learning of another similar fungi from her Aranara followers, they arrived at Mawtiyima Forest and found the other unconscious fungi, who she revitalized while disguising herself as a fungi to avoid confusion. From them, she learned that she was supposed to take care of the Dendro Dragon Apep, which she had forgotten when she had purged Rukkkhadevata from Irminsul. Realizing the consequences if Apep was not taken care of, they took a short detour to the Chasm to rescue another fungi before heading to the Desert of Hadramaveth, running into Apep, who angrily shunned them off, but Nahida manages to convince Apep to let her help her.^[21]

Nahida is separated from the Traveler inside Apep's body, and when she attempts to heal her, the Fire Seed shatters, prompting Nahida to prepare herself to sacrifice more of her energy to restore Apep. Fortunately, this does not come to pass, as the fungi that accompanied her sacrifice themselves in her place. The Traveler soon arrives and fights a powerful guardian that emerged after Apep's body was restored. Apep decides to not intervene in human affairs, interested to see how far Nahida and humanity will go under the rule of the Heavenly Principles before expelling them from her body.^[22] Returning to the fungi, Nahida decides to bring the Hydro fungi's family (Nur) to the fungi camp in Mawtiyima Forest. Learning what Nahida had intended to do from Paimon, the Traveler is upset by her rash actions but forgives her. Seeing the fungi's family mirror their actions, Nahida decides to personally oversee the camp's well-being.^[23]

The Traveler encounters Yoimiya in Sumeru, who had left Inazuma to visit another nation after the Sakoku Decree was rescinded. Having heard of a meteor shower, she told the Traveler that she was looking for one in Sumeru. Since meteor showers did not exist, and not wanting to disappoint the visitor, Nahida suggested to "lie" by creating the storm in a dream. She gave the Traveler an Emberglow Leaf, which the Traveler would use after taking Yoimiya around Sumeru, while she had the Aranara prepare the dream. After bringing Yoimiya across the rainforest, they use the leaf, allowing Yoimiya to witness a meteor storm.^[24]

Nahida would catch up with the Wanderer after he returned from Simulanka, discovering his companion. She easily discerned that he had made a new friend there due to the expressions written all over his face.^[25] Afterwards, the Traveler and Paimon caught up to her, asking if she had the marked version of "Reasoning Knows Not Time of Day, but Suspense Always Follows a Blizzard." She did not, as she only needed the one without modifications.^[26]

As another Sabzeruz Festival was arriving, the people of Sumeru decided to present a surprise gift for Nahida. Aware of her birthday, Nahida had tried to avoid reading her peoples' minds and wanting to give them a surprise of her own, asked the Aranara to help her prepare one. When the festival commenced, Nahida was delighted by the attention before calling the Aranara out, delighting them in turn and claiming that it would be an unforgettable birthday. Sorush then asked her if she had drawn her conclusion too fast, which she told her she did not before asking if she and the rest of the Pari would like to move to Sumeru City. Sorush declined due to their tasks before Paimon remarked that the birthday felt like a dream. The Traveler then decided to gather the group for a photo, which Nahida gladly accepted.^[27]

At some point after the events in Nod-Krai, Collei had a strange dream in which everyones' roles were swapped, who was later encouraged by Nicole to share these concerns with Nahida and the Traveler. She met with Nahida and told her what she experienced, prompting her to order the evacuation of the rainforest before heading inside Irminsul to investigate the matter. The dream was linked to Dottore's machinations, having his digitized soul inserted within Irminsul to fuse with the other half that Columbina had killed in Nod-Krai, and he quickly overrode Nahida's authority, leaving her in a comatose state. The Traveler brought her to Apep, who agreed to help Nahida only because she had helped her in her time of need. When Nahida came to, Apep told her to resolve the situation, warning her that if her actions resulted in negative effects to the dragon, she would hold her accountable, something which she stated would not be pleasant before dropping her off at The Mausoleum of King Deshret. Nahida learned of her peoples' plan to access Irminsul and told them that in its current state, they would be unable to do so, prompting Alhaitham to use a more radical solution of overloading Irminsul. During the operation, a large Irminsul tree sprouted in Sumeru City, which caused her to confirm her suspicions that Dottore was the one who infiltrated Irminsul. Seeing that the system was no longer recoverable, Nahida contacted Mavuika and borrowed her Pyro Gnosis, which the Traveler stored in their body. While her people retook the city, Nahida relocated to the Eternal Oasis as the Aaru system activated, transporting her into Irminsul, where she assisted the Traveler and Wanderer against Dottore. In the end, Nahida used the Pyro Gnosis to burn Irminsul to its roots, confirming her decision with three of the Four Shades — Ronova, Istaroth and Naberius. Fortunately, Nicole was able to transfer Nahida's compatibility with Irminsul to the Aaru system and she thanked her people for their contributions.^[28]

Trivia

• Nahida is the first Archon to utilize the short character model.
• Nahida is one of the characters with ornaments that glow. While wearing her default outfit, For All Knowledge, a Verse, when Nahida's Elemental Burst is ready, the four green gem-like ornaments on her outfit and the chain-link symbol on the front of her dress will glow the way other characters' non-Vision gems glow along with their Visions. One gem is on the front of her collar, one is on the back of her collar, one is at the bottom of her skirt at the back, and one is on the fixture at the top of her cape at her back.
• Nahida has no object that appears to be a Vision while wearing her default outfit, For All Knowledge, a Verse, but when switching to Nahida when her Elemental Burst is ready, the projected elemental symbol that is typically seen over other characters' Visions is seen over the leaf in Nahida's hair.
• Nahida and Zhongli are the first characters who have multiple versions of their Character Stories.
• The light source and shading of Nahida's Wish Art differs from that of her Card.
• Nahida's Character Teaser, "Nahida: Happy Birthday", released on her actual birthday, October 27.

• Despite being an Archon, Nahida does not have any voice-overs regarding other playable Archons other than Mavuika, and in Focalors' place, Furina.
• When she jumps, dashes, or falls, a faint musical tinkle can be heard.
• Nahida is the first playable character to openly cry on-screen, during the cutscene within the act Where the Boat of Consciousness Lies.
• Nahida is one of the few characters to make transformative reactions between elements deal CRIT DMG and is activated by her second Constellation. The other being Mizuki with similar effects activated by her sixth Constellation.
• Nahida, who is of Dendro, was shown to be able to utilize the Electro and Pyro Gnoses.^[5][28] While Archons might be able to utilize all seven Gnoses, the elements Nahida used mirrors the elemental interaction of Tri-Lakshana Creatures.
• Nahida is one of the only three characters in the game to emit unique foot noises while moving. The other two being Arlecchino's metal heels and Skirk's void heels.
• Nahida shares the same Chinese voice actress, Hualing, and the same Japanese voice actress, Tamura Yukari, with Theresa Apocalypse from the Honkai series by HoYoverse, and her Japanese voice actress with the ELF Blood Embrace from Honkai Impact 3rd; all three characters share a similar small appearance with white hair. Nahida and Theresa Apocalypse also share multiple parallels and similarities.
  • Nahida's color scheme is similar to the color palette of Theresa's event outfit Verdant Sky.
  • Both Nahida and Theresa are leaders of an academic institution, with Nahida being in charge of the Akademiya, and Theresa being the founder and principal of St. Freya Highschool.
  • They both are also smaller incarnations of a previous deceased figure, with Nahida being a reincarnation of Greater Lord Rukkhadevata, and Theresa being a genetic clone of Kallen Kaslana.

  • Hosseini claims that some students in Sumeru Akademiya undergo a "prolonged period of scrutiny by the God of Wisdom" — a figure of speech for having to spend extra years at Sumeru Akademiya — when the Traveler questions Hosseini's extended status as an undergraduate.^[29]

Etymology

• "Nahida" is likely based on Nahid (Persian: ناهید Nâhid) a Middle Persian variant spelling of Anahita, a Zoroastrian goddess. Anahita is the goddess of "the Waters" (Aban) and is associated with fertility, healing, and wisdom.
  • In-game, both "Anahitian" and "Nahidad" are terms affiliated with the Dendro Archon(s), although the terms have only been used generically and have not been ascribed to refer to a specific Dendro Archon.
    • Anahitian Blessing is described as the Dendro Archon's blessing.
    • In Sohreh's Note, the eponymous Sohreh decides to name a new species of micro-scarab "Nahidad Scarabs," and proceeds to explain that the name means "The Dendro Archon's Boon."
  • In the Persian epic Shahnameh by Ferdowsi, Nahid is the mother of Alexander the Great.
• "Nahida" is also the name used for a genus of butterflies.
• The name Kusanali likely refers to the Kusanāḷi-Jātaka, one of the poems within the Jātaka, a series of 547 Buddhist poems detailing the previous births of Buddha. The Kusanāḷi-Jātaka specifically details the encounter with a tree sprite.
  • "Kusanāḷi" itself is derived from the Pali words kusa ("kusa-grass," a sacred plant used in Hindu ceremonies) and nāḷi ("a hollow stalk or tube").
  • In Chinese, "Lesser Lord Kusanali" is 小吉祥草王 Xiǎo Jíxiángcǎo Wáng, "Little Lucky-Grass Monarch." The word 吉祥草 may be derived from the Jātaka verse "Yathā ahaṁ Kusanāḷī rucāyaṁ" (English: Just as (the reed-god) Kusanāḷi did to this tree; Chinese: 于此鲁伽树，吉祥草助我 Yúcǐ lǔjiāshù, jíxiángcǎo zhù wǒ, "As to the ruca-tree will the lucky-grass help me"). The word is also used to refer to the kusa-grass.
  • In Korean, the name is 쿠사나리 데비 Kusanari Debi. The word 데비 Debi derived from the Sanskrit or Pali word devī ("goddess" or "queen").
  • In Japanese, the name is クラクサナリデビ Kura Kusanari Debi, where デビ Debi may be of the same derivation as above, and クラ Kura may be derived from the Pali word khudda or cūla ("small", "inferior" or "low"). Kura may also be derived from the Persian word خدا Khuda ("Lord" or "God").
• Kusanali's title Mahakusaladhamma consists of three words: महा mahā, "great", कुशल kúśala, "skilled, prosperous, good", and Dhamma.
