Active Honkai Reaction, previously called "Meta-Morph Overload" or "Over Meta-Morph", is an ability that every MANTIS possesses. It changes them into a Honkai Beast that resembles the Honkai Beast whose genes they were infused with.^[2][3][4][5]

Overview

Active Honkai Reaction is the after-effect of the Meta-Morph surgery that turns MANTISes into a beast-like form. This form partially resembles the Honkai Beast whose genes they are infused with and is also considered the final form of a MANTIS. Most MANTISes cannot control their transformation, which leads them to unwillingly turn into mindless Honkai Beasts that attack and destroy everything in their path. All MANTISes are said to be subject to the instinct of succumbing to its power and thus are actively suppressing it. If they can control their own Honkai power, a MANTIS can manually activate this ability to enhance their previous abilities or gain new ones. If not, the MANTIS will manually transform into a mindless Honkai Beast instead, unable to suppress its instincts.^[3][5]

In World Serpent, any soldier must first enter the Elysian Realm to become an agent. The final trial involves accepting Mobius's "gift" as a baptism. This "gift" from Mobius grants the soldier the ability to activate their Active Honkai Reaction.^[6][7]

History

The 9th Herrscher Aftermath

Following the death of the 9th Herrscher, a MANTIS named Ato died. A young MANTIS named Kosma, angered and disappointed with Kevin after witnessing Ato's death, unwillingly transformed into a "demonic" Honkai Beast. This was the first time a MANTIS had transformed into a Honkai Beast, and the MOTH named this transformation as a "Meta-Morph Overload".^[2][8]

Eventually, Kevin was able to stop Kosma. As a result of the incident, Kosma quietly left the MOTH. He gradually transformed into his Honkai Beast form, believing he was "pure evil", and hid in an abandoned building in a wasteland. Mobius located and greeted him. She then spoke his name and rank, but Kosma did not remember them and told her to leave. Mobius revealed that she had known about the "Over Meta-Morph" from the beginning but had stayed silent due to a lack of evidence. She said she had studied the characteristics of Vishnu and could stabilize his side effects, making him "normal" again. Mobius saw the "beauty" in the "Demon" before her and said, "There, there... good... You can do it, dear child. You can take MANTIS to a whole new level. You can... Help me build the last step for me."^[4]

The MOTH had declared that all Vishnu must be terminated. Not wanting the "Demon" to be disposed of, Mobius secretly relocated him to a facility for her own research. She then began experimenting on him and eventually contacted Vill-V for assistance. Excited to do what the MOTH had prohibited, Vill-V accepted the invitation and began helping with the research. She said that this Vishnu was strange, and more demonic and stronger than others. She speculated it was one of Mobius's Honkai Beast creations and advised categorizing it as a Vipralopa-class. Mobius laughed at Vill-V for calling the "Demon" a Vishnu and mocked her for "bullying" her own companion. Mobius then revealed to Vill-V that the "Demon" was, in fact, "Kosma". The revelation shocked Vill-V, as Mobius had been experimenting on her own companion. Mobius then opened eight lab doors containing hundreds of Honkai Beasts and declared, "Go, Kosma. Dinner... is Served."^[9]

The First Institute Incident

After experimenting on Kosma, Mobius wanted to surpass the limits of Meta-Morph surgery. She began experimenting on the Śeṣa genes within her body, experiencing death and rebirth countless times. This was until one point, at the "First Institute," where she suddenly changed herself into a giant, snake-like Honkai Beast.^[3]

The alarm sounded as the transformation began. Su, a doctor at the First Institute, rushed to the location and looked on in horror at the giant snake-like Honkai Beast in Mobius's room. Su activated his psychic power, the "Karma Wheel," to stop the giant, snake-like Honkai Beast. After a long time, neither side could gain the upper hand; it had become a contest of endurance. Hua, who was stationed at the First Institute, also rushed to the location after hearing the alarm. Her appearance accidentally broke the stalemate; as a result, she was affected by Su's Karma Wheel and rendered unconscious. The transformed Mobius took the opportunity to inflict a damaging blow on Su.^[3] The serpent then laughed with Mobius's voice, but without her consciousness; her laughter was harsh and cold. Since the Karma Wheel's domain was still effective, Su had to delve deeper into Mobius's spiritual space to connect with her unconscious mind to stop her. He had to fully remove the shackles on Mahāmāyūrī, which he had previously tried so hard to keep, as he knew the risks it involved. But as the situation didn't give him a choice. He unknowingly transformed himself.^[10]

Sakura, who happened to be at the "First Institute", also rushed into the battle. She was horrified to see Hua on the ground unconscious and a giant snake-like Honkai Beast fighting a peacock-like Honkai Beast. The peacock-like Honkai Beast passed out from using his ability, and the giant snake then attacked him. Due to her previous battle, the giant snake was already weaker, so Sakura easily defeated her. Sakura was surprised to learn that the giant snake was Mobius.^[11]

Following this incident, Su didn't want anyone to know his Meta-Morph Overload and asked Sakura to keep it as a secret. Mobius was then called for an interrogation alone with Dr. MEI. After being interrogated, MOTH released Mobius, and she returned to her duties. The MOTH then changed the name of this ability from "Meta-Morph Overload" to the name of Mobius's research—"Active Honkai Reaction."^[3]
