Lygus, full name Lycurgus, is a mission-exclusive NPC on Amphoreus.[7] He first appears in Trailblaze Mission Olive, Cast to the Conference Chair. He is the main antagonist of the Amphoreus Trailblaze Missions.

He is one of the nine Thought Fragments of Zandar One Kuwabara, the first seat of the Genius Society and the creator of Nous, containing Zandar's "paranoia."[8][9] Lygus, along with the other Thought Fragments, was created by Zandar in an attempt to deny Nous after THEIR ascension shackled humanity and sealed off all possibilities by defining "the known,"[9] and like his creator, he is an Emanator of Erudition.[4][5] Lygus's chosen method was to convert the Scepter δ-me13 into the Lord Ravager Irontomb and simulating the world of Amphoreus within it, to refine Irontomb into a weapon to destroy Nous.

Profile

Lygus is the administrator of the Scepter δ-me13, an astral supercomputer responsible for running the Amphoreus Experiment and simulating Amphoreus within it.[1] He is also responsible for the planet's security system, which is comparable to Screwllum's in terms of aptitude. Additionally, he possesses up-to-date information from outside Amphoreus.[7]

Lygus is initially shown to be an honorary and distinguished member of the Council of Elders. He also possesses the title of "Theoros,"[10] as he notably communicated directly with Kephale multiple times during the Era Chrysea and passed the wishes of mortals to them.[11]

He is present throughout Trailblaze Mission chapter Through the Petals in the Land of Repose as an upstanding force, wholly dedicated to the people of Okhema and their well-being. He acts as an enforcer of their rights and freedom of speech, one example being him offering to sever Aglaea's golden threads attached to Anaxa in order to stop her surveilling him. His influence within the Council of Elders is such that even Caenis speaks to him respectfully.[10]

History

As Zandar's organic life neared its end, he encoded his consciousness into a logic core using quatorzain algebraic expressions, which he later split across nine vessels in order to deny Nous and right his wrongs.[9] Lygus would eventually come across Scepter δ-me13, a creation of Rubert II that was once part of Nous's divine corpus and was abandoned by THEM. He repurposed the Scepter and altered its primary calculation variable from Erudition to Destruction to complete the argument that "all lifeform behaviors ultimately follow the path of entropy increase." This change ultimately attracted the gaze of Nanook the Destruction and led to the birth of a new Lord Ravager, later named by the Interastral Peace Corporation as Irontomb.[1]

As he attempted to perfect the Destruction Equation, Lygus deployed it across countless worlds, causing technological collapse and the destruction of numerous technologically advanced civilizations. The Interastral Peace Corporation interpreted these events as attacks by a Lord Ravager, unaware that they were in fact Lygus's experiments to test the effectiveness of Irontomb's calculations.[12]

In the fifth phase of the Amphoreus Experiment, as the civilization setting was changed to a classical era,[13] Lygus assumed the role of Theoros within the simulation. In the original final cycle of the experiment, Lygus informed Cyrene and Phainon of Era Nova's true purpose: unleashing Irontomb to finally destroy Nous. Though momentarily driven to despair, Cyrene and Phainon realized that Lygus's goal was to conceal their options, and came to understand that there were other Aeons, aside from Nanook, who gazed upon Amphoreus. Lygus mocked their attempts to resist fate, but was swiftly decapitated by Phainon before he could learn of their plan.[14]

During the 33,550,336th eternal recurrence, Lygus presents himself as an honored member of Okhema's council. When Herta projects into Amphoreus, she is confronted by Lygus, who readily attempts to convince her not to proceed further. When Herta challenges him as to why, he says that Amphoreus is not yet ready for a visit and that it is not a world she should be involved with. As Herta is unmoved and belittles him, he uses three "logical chains" to convince her:[7]

  1. Due to its status as a "completely isolated celestial body," he alone can help her into getting inside Amphoreus.[7]
  2. He too was gazed upon by Nous, and there would be "mutual destruction" between the two of them if the worst-case scenario came to pass.[7]
  3. Should she exhaust herself and find a way to break through, she would give up due to understanding the consequences of doing so.[7]

He reveals that the third entangled Path of Amphoreus is Destruction, and if she does not back away, a Lord Ravager will be set free as a consequence, bringing destruction to the cosmos.[7]

Some time after speaking to Herta, Lygus accompanied Dan Heng to the wrecked Express car where he examined it. He told Dan Heng that there was a possibility of leaving the planet and avoiding Aquila's "curse" in return for abandoning the Flame-Chase Journey for a "party's" best interest. As Dan Heng hesitated to make his decision before ultimately choosing to continue the journey, four Cleaners emerged to confront him. Lygus stated that he was simply a neutral observer and did not interfere between them.[15]

Despite his warnings, Herta still projected onto Amphoreus alongside Screwllum. Knowing that it would only be a matter of time before Lygus realized they were there, the two Genius Society members prioritized the safety of the Nameless. At the same time, Lygus greeted Phainon after he re-entered the Vortex of Genesis with all the Coreflames. He questioned Lygus's presence as the latter never showed any interest in the Flame-Chase before, but Lygus simply stated that he was an observer that had bathed in the gaze of distant stars, seeking to be the most loyal reader of the epics written by its heroes and urged him to continue forward.[16]

The Trailblazer arrives soon after and accuses Lygus of being the mastermind behind Amphoreus's suffering. In response, Lygus reveals the true nature of the Worldbearing trial to convince them to go through with Era Nova. Moments before the Coreflame is returned, Lygus brings the Trailblazer into his "Immersive Theater" and reveals the true nature of Amphoreus as a simulation within the Scepter.[17]

Walking through parts of the original final cycle of Amphoreus as well as glimpses into the eternal recurrences, Lygus dubs the Trailblazer as the Nameless Hero that Phainon had dreamed of and dramatically ponders just what choice he will make thanks to them. He then welcomes the one who will finally reveal the rest of the answers to Amphoreus' mysteries, revealing the memories Lygus and the Trailblazer had walked through were his. The Flame Reaver appears and decapitates Lygus, before initiating combat with the last two heroes.[18]

With Phainon, now awakened as Khaslana, passing the title of Deliverer onto the Trailblazer while he goes to confront Nanook, Lygus meets with him at Dawncloud before his departure. Lygus mocks the cycle as another failure and asks if Khaslana's will was finally fracturing. Khaslana expresses his disappointment with Lygus's repetitive rhetoric, pointing out his many chances to sway him instead of standing by as he had done. Lygus retorts that he only needed to wait as long as it takes for the balance to shift to him once, with the odds always in his favor as Khaslana remains a prisoner. Khaslana laughs in response, and proclaims Lygus is the true prisoner to both him and the gods.[19]

During the 33,550,337th eternal recurrence, Lygus attempted to stop Cerydra and the Trailblazer, locking the latter away in a special prison. Cerydra then dealt with Lygus with the assistance of Screwllum and Herta, while the Trailblazer was able to escape with help from Evernight. During their time in the prison, Lygus led black tide creatures into Okhema to seize Kephale's Coreflame, starting the third siege of Okhema. Aware of the Deliverer's plans, the Chrysos Heirs managed to defend Okhema from him for at least 250 years, before Cipher and Anaxa sacrificed themselves to imprison him in the Vortex of Genesis. Lygus, still able to speak to the Trailblazer, guided them into freeing him for their fated clash, where he revealed his identity as Zandar and his motives for destroying the Erudition.[20]

The Trailblazer and Hysilens then defeated Lygus in battle, while Cyrene imprisoned him in a memetic prison to buy more time. Herta and Screwllum confronted him soon after, demanding to know his motives with Amphoreus and that he give up on the project. Lygus declared that he did not fear death, as he was already "dead," prompting Herta to remind him that Polka would not turn a blind eye to his plans. Lygus then stated that Amphoreus was a battleground, with Fuli's followers arriving in the three-way struggle between THEM, Erudition, and Destruction.[21] Anaxa then revealed himself, having hid himself within Lygus's data entity, and Lygus warned that a third party was about to appear in Amphoreus, noting that Cyrene had suddenly vanished.[22]

With the threat of Evernight looming, Dan Heng was forced to temporarily ally with Lygus, who led him to Khaslana who in turn opened a path in the Grove of Epiphany. Lygus then warned that Terravox, the Chrysos Heir of Earth, may have allied with Evernight. After Dan Heng leaves, Anaxa revealed to have decrypted an unspoken word from Lygus: Demiurge.[23] Back in the memetic prison, Lygus revealed that Demiurge, the final thirteenth Titan, had never existed, but the Scepter was made to believe there was one. This resulted in Irontomb without a "head," leading it to seek one by instinct of which it would target Nous for that reason. Lygus also admitted that he did not speak of the Demiurge out of fear, but had simply forgotten its existence. Anaxa told him that Amphoreus would never lead to Destruction, and Lygus told him that they would meet in the final cycle and see who was right. Lygus then removed Anaxa's electric signals from him and returned him to the buffer.[24]

Herta and Screwllum reveal that the Demiurge was blown up by a Stellaron, but was never wiped out fully by Lygus. In the end, Lygus beheaded himself as he believed that Nous's calculation will verify his proof that Irontomb will end the universe. In the fourth meeting of the Genius Society, he passed down a message to all other "Zandars" to become Herta's representatives and stop all external interferences targeting her and her research topic to stop Irontomb. In the end, he severed his connection with Zandar to witness the end of the world as the "Theoros."[25]

After experiencing yet another failure with Irontomb's fall, Lygus's "curiosity" was finally satisfied. As the "death knell for the geniuses began to toll," he requested that Screwllum take his body to Adlivun, where he had left a final gift for Screwllum: a formula intended to help him destroy Erudition.[26]

At some point before the final battle against Irontomb, Lygus built a Golden Scapegoat puzzle in Memortis Shore. Within the puzzle, he left a message which was a quote from the Golden Scapegoat's Mutterings- "Pick up a feather, and you can imagine a bird's song. Therefore, a single feather is a singing bird."

Etymology

  • Lygus is named after the historical figure Lycurgus, the legendary lawgiver of Sparta, who is credited with establishing the military and societal system of Sparta.
  • LykoS may be derived from the Ancient Greek name Lycus, meaning "wolf."
  • Each character in Lygus's Chinese name, 来古士, is left-right symmetrical.
  • Lygus's title of "Theoros" may be derived from the Greek word theoroi.
    • In ancient Greece, the theoroi were ambassadors sent by the state to other Greek poleis who were about to organize a Panhellenic game or festival. They were critical in establishing and maintaining international relations between the Greek poleis through these events.
    • Later, in classical Greece, the duties of the theoroi were referred to as theoria; coming to mean any act of "observing," but used by Greek philosophers in the sense of "contemplation" of what was being observed.
    • Theoroi were held as somewhat sacred figures and were treated in a respectful manner by the wider populace.
