This article is about the puzzle. For other uses, see Spirithief (Disambiguation).
Spirithieves are a type of puzzle found on Amphoreus.
After completing the puzzle, the player must speak to "Spirithief" Bartholos. Some of these encounters will have Bartholos assume a fighting stance, and this will result in a fight against it with a mix of Titankin, Crepuscular Beasts and/or Black Tide Creatures, which are location-dependent.

"Spirithief" Bartholos- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Ahh — I surrender, I surrender! If you keep pulling like that, we'll be split apart!
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: You're getting better and better at turning time back. It's no wonder that old Oronyx is keen on you!
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Hehe... It would be such a shame to waste your talents on the right path. Would you be interested in a little collaboration?
What kind of collaboration?
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Though I may not have your talents, my reputation as the Master Thief is still known far and wide. Joining us would be a bet you wouldn't regret...
I would never associate with the likes of you!
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: It will take some time for the gavel of Talanton to fall. Why not hear me out before you make your decision?
Give me back my chest!
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: If you obsess over your small losses, you are sure to lose sight of the greater gains. Why not hear me out before you make your decision?
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Hehe, you see the tailor's shop on the corner? There's an antique vase in there. Unfortunately, the foot traffic is high in there, and it's tough to get a moment to strike.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: But all you would need to do is waggle that little finger of yours, turn the clock back to a quiet evening with no one around, and I can walk right in and snap it up with ease...
Is this vase valuable?
Just listening to that made my ears feel dirty.- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Don't be so hasty. I haven't finished!
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Then, you take the vase to an antique store to sell it. When the boss turns around to put it away in the warehouse, I will sneak in and grab their accounting book before anyone is any the wiser...
Is the accounting book valuable, too?
If you're already in the warehouse, is that really all you're going to take?- "Spirithief" Bartholos: This is no simple accounting book! There is an old land deed stashed in there that was signed even before the war of the Titans, back when Okhema was no more than wilderness.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: As for the demarcated area... Don't let this shock you... But it is the current location of Kephale themself!
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: With this land deed, we will have a legitimate right to claim ownership of the Dawn Device. Then, when we say day, the sun will be high in the sky. When we say night, the world will fall dark before your eyes! If anyone wants to see the light of the sun, they will have to pay us a fair fee!
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Hehehe... When that time comes, I will buy this entire street and steal from any house I want. As for you? If you wanted to hold the Dawn Device for a bit to play, that would be perfectly fine~
I don't want to hold it...
I'm taking 70%.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Y—You're even worse than I am! This whole thing was my idea!
This land deed doesn't even exist, I bet?- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Tsk, this conversation is going nowhere. My throat is all hoarse from talking, and for what? Just take your darned chest and enjoy it yourself. Later!

- Old Bart the Porter: Bleh... I feel like the ground is spinning... I feel so sick!
- Old Bart the Porter: Kephale above. I am just an old man... The priest said that I would go through an ordeal when I was 884 years old... Could this be the day?
- Old Bart the Porter: Child, you have the wrong man. I am not the infamous Spirithief Bartholos. My name is Old Bart, a mere porter. I have come to move this chest on the orders of the Council of Elders.
Quit pretending, Bartholos!
- Old Bart the Porter: We do indeed look similar. I can understand how you could mistake us...
The Council of Elders is hiring elderly workers?
- Old Bart the Porter: With the enemy at our gates, I naturally also wish to do my part for Okhema.
- Old Bart the Porter: Child, you do not believe me. I can understand that. Fortunately, we have plenty of time. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
About your looks...
- Old Bart the Porter: The creations of Cerces share common elements in life. Countless chimeras resemble each other, just as it is common for a spirit or two to look alike.
About your job...
- Old Bart the Porter: Back then, I was a lonely shade that roamed the wilderness. It was the elders that took me in. Seeing that I was fast of foot and deft with my hands, they allowed me to take on the duty of "porter."
About your sudden appearance...
- Old Bart the Porter: Why would there be a chest just sitting around waiting for you to open it in a public place? No one dares to blindly interfere with it because it is the property of the elders. You were going to cross the line for a citizen, so I rushed to stop you.
The truth is clear as day.- Old Bart the Porter: I put my everything into my work, and you still give an old man like me a hard time! Why don't you apologize to me and we'll call this settled!
Sorry, old man!
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: "Sorry, old man~"
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Hehehe, I'm gonna laugh my head off!
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Let me tell you! A trickster isn't scared of villains or fellow deceivers. What they're really scared of is punks like you! Naïve little sheep that waste all the effort we put into our traps!
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Taking this chest doesn't even feel right anymore... Do us a favor and try not to get tricked so easily next time!
Bartholos, you're lying again!
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Hehehe, you're pretty alert, huh? But in this life we live, is there anyone that isn't lying? If Kephale could talk, they'd be the biggest swindler of all!
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Take the chest. We'll meet again!

Haha, isn't it luxurious?
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: It's far too extravagant in here! The stench of its opulence and lavishness makes me sick!
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: While I was making my way through wind and rain, you were here living it up in a mansion, throwing back ambrosia, and living the good life?
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: What is even more loathsome is that you live in such radiant luxury and would still squabble with me over a mere chest... Just the excess that leaks from the gaps in your teeth would keep me clothed and fed for a whole year.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Is there any fairness in this world? Is there any justice? Are there no laws anymore? If Talanton knew of this, they would burst into tears!
Talanton has no interest in this.

- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Are you so hard pressed that you just go around shoving everything you find in your greedy little pockets?
I have my own use for it.

The universal street rat, at your service.
You're allowed to be here, but I'm not?- "Spirithief" Bartholos: If you had come sooner, this place would not be so desolate and bleak. I used to come here all the time when this place was all the rage!
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Warriors from all over would gather for great ceremonies and engage in hand-to-hand combat, boxing, beast fighting, spear throwing... They would battle for glory with their lives, vying for the winner's crown and the benediction of Nikador.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: "Cast your spear into the earth and feed the soil its libations." Bards and poets compiled songs of the warriors' battles to the death. Unfortunately, this prosperity has long since passed, and these songs are rarely heard anymore.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Hehe. Once, the beast cage broke and the beasts flooded into the arena. The unarmed warriors were completely helpless. However, I had no fear and single-handedly caught them all one-by-one. That's where I got the title: "The Horned Warrior."
With that sprout body of yours?

- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Although, it was a truly brilliant battle! The audience was packed with people all roaring and shouting... I bet that great buffoon Nikador enjoyed the show a lot, too.

"Spirithief" Bartholos- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Ah, I've had enough. Just take the chest. I'm not in the mood to fight with you today.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: It feels as if Oronyx themself has cast a curtain to eclipse the bright light of my talents. Yesterday, when I left the house, I accidentally exposed my location for the first time ever. Meeting you now... It looks like any hope for today being any better is gone, too...
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Honestly, there's something fishy about what went down yesterday...
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Rumor has it that there's a "master thief" that's been running recently around, whose reputation seems to be threatening my own. So, I decided I'd do something big and restore glory to the great name of Zagreus.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: So, I racked my brain trying to decide what I should steal to show off my amazing talents.
Bath towels from the public baths?
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Look at my flawless, delicate skin. You think I have use for something so crude?
Aglaea's mannequin?
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Oof... I may be in bad shape, but I still have some sense! There's no need to be getting mixed up in something like that.
The Dawn Device on Kephale's back?
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: I stole that thing ages ago. I'm just borrowing Kephale's shoulder to house it for the moment.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: You'll never guess it... I am planning to steal the keystone from the main hall of the Council of Elders. I'll bring that entire hall crashing to the ground!
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Unfortunately... Things didn't go quite as planned... When I opened the window, it let out a squeaking noise.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: In an instant, seven or eight priests surrounded me, cursing me and covering me in ambrosia. They even struck me with brushes made from dromas fur! I was lucky to make it out of there...
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: It was only later that I found out that these rumors of a "master thief" were just a ploy to lure me into making a move... When did these old crones get so cunning?
Maybe you're just off your game?
That's divine retribution!- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Ah... I hope you never have to experience something like that. The talents that I have relied on over the years vanished in an instant. My once perfectly watertight handiwork was suddenly full of holes... It's like I wasn't even myself.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Now, I can't even pry a single treasure from your hands... As I am now, I may as well jump into the Abyss, swim up to Thanatos, and let them put me out of my misery...
Just take the chest!
You can't let challenges get you down!
But you didn't manage to steal it before, either...- "Spirithief" Bartholos: I never thought that when I was at my most lost, you would offer me words of comfort. I have nothing to repay you with, so allow me to reward your kindness with a secret...
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: The Council of Elders' main hall doesn't even have a keystone!
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Hehehehe! That reaction of yours is a million times more thrilling than stealing some chest! Take it as a thank you for taking part in this little performance with me. See ya!

- "Spirithief" Bartholos: It's difficult to describe this feeling... I feel like a pair of gloves that has been washed and turned inside-out... My mind feels like it's been completely flipped around.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: The more I try to rush forwards, the more I end up going backwards. I want to swear at you but all my dirty words feel like they're rushing into my stomach instead!

I am Oronyx's kin.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: I knew it! No mortal could have such powers.
I am Oronyx in the flesh.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: To have descended from godhood and possessed a mortal shell, it's no wonder I didn't recognize you.
I am, the Galactic Baseballer!

A petty thief that's never succeeded.

- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Seems like you don't know much else either...
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: *sigh* The air around here sure is eerie. A band of warriors mechanically fighting to their deaths as if possessed by madness. Even the sculptures on the walls can talk, whispering things like "Warrior... Warrior... Come closer"...
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: It's obviously a trap! Who'd dare go close?

- "Spirithief" Bartholos: What were the people of Castrum Kremnos thinking when they built their city here? Even if they really enjoyed having their feet scorched, you'd think they would at least add railings to their bridges.
Why so many questions?
You a curious creature or what?- "Spirithief" Bartholos: It never hurts to be curious. When you see a treasure chest, can you suppress that rising impulse to open it and see what's inside?
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: You don't look like someone from Castrum Kremnos. Could you be a warrior here to participate in the festival?

- "Spirithief" Bartholos: We're old friends by now... And the way you handle Oronyx's power so naturally... Maybe we've danced this dance a thousand times before in their long memories?
Don't flatter yourself.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Hehehe, vanity is a virtue, and I, Bartholos, thank you for the compliment.
Take a guess.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Hmph, you're no fun. But since you put it that way, I bet we have.
Why are you doing this eternal cycle conspiracy theory?
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Seeing this land ravaged by the black tide, doesn't it remind you of the secret treasure in the desert?
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: But that's fine — I, Bartholos, love all uncertain things: The unknown treasures in chests, seeds that might sprout into anything, and that legendary cat that could be both dead and alive.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Uncertainty holds the greatest wisdom. As great Zagreus used to say...
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: "Wisdom is the art of achieving what was impossible to you, and I hate games that are without wisdom."
Cut the chatter. My stuff is off-limits.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Easy there, no need to be upset. There are no traps here, and I'm far more generous than I seem. I simply recalled a story about that great ancestor...
What exactly is your relationship with Zagreus?
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: As a Spirithief, I, Bartholos, am blessed to call the Coin of Whimsy both ancestor and friend. Rather obvious, no?
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Legend has it that the other Titans tied a star to Zagreus to stop their pranks. Every time Zagreus escaped through the sky, the Thief Star would mark their trail.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: But here's the trick — Zagreus attached the star to a stone. So whenever they wanted to do mischief, they'd simply toss the rock! Hehehe! Sending the Titans on a wild chase after the Thief Star while missing what's right under their noses...
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Tell you what. I wasn't really after this seed anyway, so consider it yours. Just remember — the Grove's paths often lead you in, but not back out. Mind you, don't lose your way!

Oh? Not interested in my treasure chest anymore?
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: That's another thing! Besides, it's unowned. Both of us claimed it by wit and strength — why is it yours?
Melding of hearts, eh? Funny, isn't it?
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Exactly. I, Bartholos, have quite the sense of humor.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Speaking of Cerces, did you know they originally came from a strand Kephale's hair...?

Zagreus? That's profound of them.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Of course! The Trickery Titan is a Titan, right? If they're all just talking nonsense, then how do Titans maintain their dignity?
That tone doesn't sound like Zagreus.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Hmm, maybe it wasn't what Zagreus said, but what I said?

I'm a lore collector.

When I see an option to interact, I just press it...

So that's what this was all about.

So how much would that thing up there fetch?
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: It's invaluable! Assuming you can find a way to move it... Even if you just had some Mountain Dweller melt it down, you'd still get a good amount of gold out of it!
Stop playing games and give me the chest.

- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Think about it, have you ever pondered what a "world of the dead" actually means?
An excellent place to stash treasures.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Of course, since riches mean nothing to the dead! But that reminds me, I've been pondering something myself...
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: What do the dead own that's worth stealing? Hehehe, if we figured that out, we could hide it in the "world of the living"!
The soul is eternal.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Hehehe, so dying occasionally isn't the end of the world! But listen, what if...
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: What if we reincarnate but end up living pretty much the same life as before? The more I think about it, the more frightening it gets.
So I could meet you while still alive.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Huh? Why get all mushy now. Do we have some kind of special connection?

- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Yet after a hundred days, perhaps out of disdain for his public way of buying people's hearts, or due to conflicts arising from the decadent lifestyle, someone from the Council of Elders assassinated him. With the merchant dead, people naturally wondered how much wealth he had left behind—
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Yet despite thorough searches, not even one Balance Coin of his wealth could be located.

- "Spirithief" Bartholos: My character setting is deeply flawed — a genuine BUG.
Speak plainly.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: I am Lord Bartholos' projection, dutifully waiting here to entertain thee with this game.
Where is the real Bartholos?
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: The talented and strategic Lord Bartholos — its abrupt departure must certainly concern "Era Nova."
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Destiny flows like tides, rising with the winds. The path of fate is broken, this work now complete. Hehe.

"Spirithief" Bartholos- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Hehe, Bartholos was right — we found a data anomaly here. Ah... gray-haired one, you must be Bartholos' friend from across the ages, yes?
Another projection, huh?
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Obviously. Like that silly spinning one earlier, Bartholos creates different kinds of projections. "Life is a hospital," ancestor Zagreus said, "where every patient is fixated on switching beds."
Where's the real Bartholos?
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Now that the Dawn Device is bust, where else would it be? When a trickster's plans collapse, only its life remains to give! Hehehehe...
Stop eating my spinning top!
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Top? Hehehehe, it really did look like a spinning top, didn't it? With that sense of humor, no wonder you're Bartholos' legendary friend.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: To be frank, I only absorbed that one to recover data. I'm torn between joy and sorrow... as Era Nova approaches, these wild, stupid data fragments multiply. If you see more of them...
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Like it or not, you're stuck playing along with them! Hehehe... Good luck! I'll leave you a big prize before I go!

- "Spirithief" Bartholos: But Bartholos told me about the porter story and said it had a blast role-playing with you.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: But Amphoreus is a tiny world, and even the tricky Bartholos ran out of roles to play. Yet you — one of their best friends — still enjoyed playing along.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: This touched Bartholos profoundly, helping it face certain destinies with more acceptance.
Cut the sentimentality, I just want the chest.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: We judge by actions, not thoughts. Face it, you and Bartholos became good friends long ago.
They truly are a special friend.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Hehe, that would make Bartholos so happy if they heard you!
Where's the real Bartholos?
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Hmm, maybe I ate them? Hehe, only joking.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Ah, I wish could say for old Bartholos — "How lovely the moon looks after dawn's fall" — but sadly, unlike the Hand of Shadow's realm, there's no moon here.

Coin of Whimsy
- (Investigate the Coin of Whimsy, optional)
Investigate- An utterly unremarkable silver coin lies on the roadside. But the moment you pick it up, its strange texture tells you that it never truly touched the ground. Instead, it hovers just above the surface like magnetic levitation.
Could there be another hidden genius?
- Don't be ridiculous. This is just an ordinary investigation. The odds of uncovering any secret from the Genius Society here... Well, let's just say they're infinitely close to zero.
I smell treasure...
It must be Zagreus's doing!- On closer inspection, you notice indentations where a chest once rested. Now it's gone without a trace. Hmm, who might be behind this? That's a tough guess...
Looks like the Spirithief's in an illusion too...
As expected, Bartholos.
Nice! Let's go on a treasure hunt!
- (Rewind the Spirithief)
"Spirithief" Bartholos- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Ahh — I surrender, I surrender! If you keep pulling like that, we'll be split apart! Bleh... I feel like the ground is spinning... I feel so sick!
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Wait a second... you're not a priest of Oronyx. But that messy gray hair... Say, this (dashing sir/
lovely miss), haven't we met before?
...How much do you still remember about me?
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Heh, you're a clever one, aren't you? Trying to bait old Bartholos into spilling the beans with a flick of the wrist!
Yeah, we've met. At the end of the west wind.
Nope, it's all your imagination.- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Hah! I knew you wouldn't spill the truth. But you've carried a scent... one "we" don't share. And if it's what I think it is... oh ho, things are about to get very interesting!
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: "It would be such a shame to waste your talents on the right path. Would you be interested in a little collaboration?" — That's what I would've said, if this were truly our first meeting. Pity...
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Pity this is just a dream, and those outside the dream can never remain here. You were never destined to be the partner in crime I've always longed for... so close, yet so far! Bye-bye, my mysterious friend!

Cruel? What are you talking about?- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Oh come on, take a good look at me. Big, round, and purple me, looks just like a grape, right? Picture it: countless humble old Bartholoses squashed beneath your feet, bellies bursting in despair, with unspeakable goo spewing forth...
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Tsssk! The horror, the cruelty! And you people even take that as an entertainment!?
What a fudgin' genius you are.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Hehehe, what a strange way of talking. Where'd you pick that up?
Don't flatter yourself.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Tch. No sense of humor at all.
Keep taking your meds.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: True that. This whole city's pretty sick, after all...
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Ahem. Anyway, since everyone seems to love the feeling of stomping on round, juicy purple things—

...That's what you care about?
As expected of you.
Mom, there's a pervert here!- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Hmph! I could accept grapes getting cruelly crushed, but me, Bartholos, not even qualified to be stomped flat!? I've been standing here for ages, and not a single soul spares me a glance!

Your stomach's got room for that?

"Mind-control Bartholos"?

Keep it short.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: I feel like it.
The long one.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Hehehe... Since you asked that question, let Bartholos explain it with a little story.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: A long, long time ago... Ah, or maybe it was just the last cycle... a group of mercenaries from Hattusili found themselves stranded outside the city of Okhema.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: They had been tricked by a few members of the Council of Elders into going up against Lady Cerydra. But those elders were captured and executed, and the mercenaries suddenly became lost homeless people with nowhere to go.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: They couldn't march ahead, because doing so would make them enemies of all Okhema. They couldn't return home either. They had trusted the elders too easily and brought no money for the journey back.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Later, thanks to a sharp-minded one among them named Xenophon, who said, "We're all strong and fit. If people along the way need labor, we can work. If they want joy, we can perform acrobatics."
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: And just like that, the world's first traveling acrobatic troupe was born. They performed their way from Okhema to far-off Hattusili and never went back to mercenary life.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Ahem... That story ran a bit long. So why did Bartholos share their treasures with friends? Well, it's for pretty much the same reason.

- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Ha, that's easy!
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Ha, it's actually quite complicated! Even I can't do it.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: Let's be honest. I'm just a regular thief who can steal elements of the memory fragments you "always carry," but those authentic memories you "hold for just an instant" are completely beyond my reach.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: But I'm not saying there's anything wrong with how you remember things. Everyone's memory works the same way... The past doesn't just sit there in your mind like some perfect recording.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: What you keep is really just a virtual reality crafted from various memetic entities, much like our world.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: You see, humans aren't Titans. No amount of photography or record-keeping can capture the absolute truth of what happened. All those tiny details just slip through your fingers like sand...
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: But don't you worry! We only find the gems after we've blown away all the worthless dust.
- "Spirithief" Bartholos: What gems, you ask? Those "authentic memories" that even I, Bartholos, can't possibly steal from your heart!
