Girtablullu (NPC)

Girtablullu is a commission-exclusive NPC and a major antagonist in Season 3 Chapters 1 and 2.

Profile

Girtablullu was a large, highly dangerous, scorpion-like Ethereal that lived in the Scamall Hollow below Roscaelifer. It had the power to open and traverse through Singularity Leakages. As an Ethereal with the potential to become an Enchainer, it instinctively sought out Karma Cores in order to devour and fuse with one.

As an Enchainer larva, Girtablullu was more intelligent and cunning than other Ethereals, and after absorbing Dracaene, was able to speak the universal language.

History

Girtablullu was first encountered by Phaethon, Norma and Remielle while investigating the CCD, by which point it had been an Enchainer larvae for quite some time.^[1] In the group's pursuit of Toby, a Bangboo whose life was under threat as part of a string of Bangboo killings, they would find him along with Girtablullu, and engaged the Ethereal in combat. Before they could finish it off, it escaped, with Bashmu arriving to take on the group, who were forced to retreat.^[2]

Shortly thereafter, the culprit behind the Bangboo killings had managed to coordinate a string of Singularity Leakages, allowing Girtablullu to find its way in to the office of Dracaene Sunbringer.^[3] It absorbed her, being able to imitate her form and mannerisms as it tried to become one with the Karma Core fragment inside her. As Phaethon, Billy and Cissia went to reveal their findings about the culprit to Dracaene, Girtablullu used the opportunity to corner and attack Phaethon, while also critically injuring Truvia, though Phaethon was able to escape thanks to Pyrois's intervention.^[4]

Girtablullu ordered the Airspace Patrol to find Phaethon, but a coordinated effort by Sigrid, Remielle and Phaethon resulted in Girtablullu being cornered. Desperate to survive and become a true Enchainer, it encased itself in a cocoon and began absorbing Ether from the environment to accelerate its transformation. Remielle, Phaethon and Pyrois were able to stop it short, though the Ethereal was still able to become more powerful in the process.^[5] After a difficult fight, the trio finally killed Girtablullu, narrowing rescuing Dracaene in the process, but by this point Girtablullu had already absorbed her Karma Core fragment, and so Bashmu, who had been biding its time, consumed the Ethereal and the Karma Core before disappearing.

Etymology

• Girtablullu is a creature with the upper body of a man and tail of a scorpion from Mesopatamian mythology. It is one of Tiamat's offspring, created to avenge Abzu's death.
  • Girtablullu is one of six references to Tiamat's offspring, with the other five being Bashmu, Kulullu, Lahmu, Mushussu and Ulidim.
