Aila

Aila was the first Moonchanter of the Frostmoon Scions five hundred years ago, who founded their current rites after abolishing their previous rituals. She also worked with Solovei to create the Lightkeepers.[4]
Profile
The first Moonchanter Aila lived five hundred years ago. She foresaw and witnessed the birth of Kuutar,[5] and offered the first drop of silver blood to her using Moonweaver's Dawn.[6] Like several other Frostmoon Scions, Aila had the ability to see through time;[7] her ability appears to be stronger than Lovia's, as she was able to witness events — such as Kuutar's birth — which Lovia either could not see or did not acknowledge.[5][Note 1]
From birth, Aila and her older twin sister Alia were raised in seclusion by Lovia, the Frostmoon Scions' Archpriestess.[1] Under her instruction, they slew other Frostmoon Scions and drank their blood to increase their own bloodline purity. Alia eventually escaped Hiisi Island, leaving Aila to receive all of Lovia's attention;[2] Aila came to resent both of them for her fate.[5]
Appearance
Aila wears blue garments of the Frostmoon Scions with golden accessories and a crown that symbolizes her status as Moonchanter. She has two antlers because of her Hyperborean lineage. She has maroon colored hair and eyes.
Story
She and her older twin sister Alia were raised by their grandmother Lovia. The sisters made a promise to one another that they "would fly together like the white birds in the vast sky." Alia got "kidnapped" by Avrelian,[8] therefore breaking that promise when leaving for a faraway place alone. After that Aila began to endure twice the torment from Lovia.[1] Yet she carried out every last one of her grandmother's commands and never defied her no matter how dreadful the punishments cloaked by her soft words.[2] Aila was destined to bear the heir to Elysium (though only as a replacement for the woman who became Avrelian's mother) and was not allowed to marry the son of an outlander.
After Avrelian's execution, Solovei presumably began investigating Rotwang, and he was aware of the collaboration between Rotwang and Lovia. He made contact with Aila and sent her a message about Lovia's true nature. On the other hand, Lovia instructed Aila to gain Solovei's trust and lure him to the sanctuary. She ordered Aila to murder him, calling him "nothing but a treacherous murderer." Aila — weary of the atrocities she performed with Moonweaver's Dawn on Lovia's orders — killed Lovia with the sword instead, impaling her through the back. Ironically, Aila discovered that Lovia herself was not a genetic Frostmoon Scion, as she had no silver blood.[2][7]
Meanwhile, Solovei and Alia confronted Rotwang at the Pillar of Embla, as the Professor was close to achieving his goal. In one final gamble, Alia threw herself into the Sampo Mill, using her Scion bloodline to "ignite" it, successfully thwarting his plan and killing him for the first time.
Solovei passed on her last message to Aila in a letter,[4]and finally went to see her in person in the Court of the First Edict. Aila recorded part of their meeting to be played in the future, when the Court of the First Edict would be unsealed by the Traveler. In the recorded part of the meeting, Solovei mentions his plans to track down Rotwang and make him pay for his deeds. Aila prophesies that "Twice shall that serpent fall — first strangled by the flesh of the faithless, then shrinking away before the light you and I ignite together," but adds that Solovei will not be the one to kill him; she explains to the yet-to-be-present Traveler that they are the one destined to kill the "undying serpent." After the meeting, Aila sent Solovei on his way, stored away the Frostmoon Scions' ancient documents and evidence of Lovia's corruption within the Court, and placed Moonweaver's Dawn within the White Spring for the Traveler. She then sealed the Court of the First Edict for the Traveler's arrival in 500 years.[7]
At some point during the Cataclysm, Aila went to the Pillar of Embla at Solovei's behest, where she put an end to the Abyssal catastrophe.[6] As prophesied, Rauthvangi had reemerged not long after his first death. Solovei and Aila — who had become the Frostmoon Scions' new leader, now known as the Moonchanter — combined forces to drive Rauthvangi and his followers back to Kipumaki Cliff. Together, Solovei and Aila eventually managed to seal away the undying fiend with their own hands, for a second time. To completely kill him for the third time, Aila gifted Solovei and his newly founded Lightkeepers the Arrow of Terpikeraunas, for the day when Rauthvangi would inevitably rise again. The Arrow — a massive, crossbow-like mechanism — was built into Piramida's Great Mead Hall and built tall enough to match the height of the Pillar of Embla.[9]
After taking over the leadership from Lovia, she reformed the faith of the Frostmoon Scions, abolishing the Hyperborean rites and had the followers devote themselves entirely to the moonlight.[6] She sealed off the Court of the First Edict to bury the evil and corruption wrought by Lovia and in preparation for the birth of a god.[10] No one could break her seal until the Traveler and Verna did in Echoes of an Unfinished Past.
Many years after, Solovei died of old age, and Aila chose not to attend his funeral. The third Reed Miller, Brahe, assumed that she had no idea, and made a trip to Hiisi Island to visit her and tell the news. However, Aila's maid told him that the Lady Moonchanter had long known of his coming and was aware of the Lightkeeper's affairs. Aila had no intention of seeing him and asked him to leave.[11]
Aila also carved the Idol of the New Moon depicting Kuutar's original form.[12]

- ↑ In the Archon Quest Where the Moon Rises in Song of the Welkin Moon: Act I - A Dance of Snowy Tides and Hoarfrost Groves, Lauma states that Moonchanters use Moon Marrow to see the "true" past, but the origins of their ability to see the future has not been mentioned. Avrelian's mother continued having visions of both past and future after abandoning the Frostmoon Scions, while Lovia could apparently use this ability while having no genetic link to the Frostmoon Scions at all.
