Furina/Storyline

Furina de Fontaine is a Fontainian celebrity who impersonated the identity of Focalors, the Hydro Archon, on the latter's behalf as part of a plan to save their people from the Prophecy of Fontaine. She is the human body and spirit of Focalors that the latter left behind after seperating her divinity and placing it into the Oratrice Mecanique d'Analyse Cardinale. Focalors instructed Furina to fool the world into believing that she was the Hydro Archon, promising her that Fontaine would be saved from the prophecy if she could successfully do so. Furina dutifully performed this role for 499 years, until she was eventually exposed and put to trial before the Opera Epiclese. After Neuvillette chose to absolve the Fontainians of their sin with his restored Authority, thus saving them from being dissolved in the flood, Furina legally abdicated from the duties of Hydro Archon, and moved out from the Palais Mermonia. She now continues to live autonomously as an ordinary human.

Profile

Personality

Flamboyant and imprudent, Furina lives for the thrill of the courtroom, often speaking in a manner peppered with bravado and drama. She is impatient and has a childlike temper, and she will occasionally make judgments that she doesn't mean, which Neuvillette frequently has to control while conducting a trial to avoid complications. While she enjoys being in the spotlight, she only does so when it is focused at her positively, breaking down in complete shambles should something go out of plan and will try to save face at the first possible opportunity. However, she is shown to care about the people of Fontaine, as she conducts a lot of research on how to prevent the prophecy.

It is later revealed that Furina was not the true Hydro Archon. Focalors, the successor of Egeria, had separated her divinity from her body and spirit; Furina was the Archon's body and spirit but had no powers. Focalors used Furina as a way to deceive the Heavenly Principles in order to prevent the result of the prophecy regarding Fontaine from becoming a permanent reality. Furina was tasked with maintaining the guise of an Archon and cursed by Focalors so that she could not die nor pursue her own happiness so long as Focalors lived. As a new "human," she had difficulty taking the role but eventually mastered it. Aware of the prophecy that would doom Fontaine, Furina assumed the role of Hydro Archon for 499 years; while she was successful in this task, it wore her down mentally so that she suffered from severe self-esteem issues and paranoia, as shown when the Traveler convinced the court audience that she was a fraud in her trial. Despite being undying due to being cursed by Focalors, Furina remained fearful of situations that seemed deadly, as she pleaded the Knave to not kill her during an attack for the Hydro Gnosis, and was hesitant in dipping her hand into Primordial Seawater to prove whether she is the Hydro Archon during a trial. As a result, she deeply fears rising water levels^[6] or the Knave being mentioned to her.^[7]

Upon being freed of her role as an acting Archon, Furina had returned to her normal self, but without the burdens associated with her role. While she is still flamboyant and dramatic at times, she now displays a softer, humbler and insecure side of herself. At first, she struggled coming to terms with her role being over, believing that her newfound freedom meant that she was no longer needed, and had trouble reaching out for the people closest to her while she was the Archon, such as Neuvillette and Clorinde. She also planned to retire from the stage despite her love of acting, finding it difficult due to the mental ordeal of having maintained the persona of an Archon for centuries. After being comforted by the Traveler, Neuvillette, and Navia as well as getting invited to a party by Clorinde, she realizes that her journey of self-discovery means that she no longer has to live her life in solitude. Eventually, she is able to regain the courage to move forward and go back onstage for the first time since her abdication, and learns to accept her identity not as the Hydro Archon, but simply as herself, culminating in her receiving a Hydro Vision.^[8]

Both as her time as archon and human, she is shown to greatly enjoy fancy confections and desserts, such as cake.

Appearance

Furina uses the medium female model. She has fair skin and her eyes are heterochromatic with droplet-shaped pupils: her right eye is light blue with a dark blue pupil, while her left eye reverses the color scheme with a purple outer ring. She also has beaded-like eyelashes and soft white hair with light blue streaks. Arkhe alignments cause changes in Furina's features.

Pneuma: Furina's hair is sectioned into two parts, similar to a jellyfish cut: a short wavy bob cut of white, and a layer underneath of twin strands. Both sport "glowing" blue streaks. Her outfit is centered around pale blues and white.

Ousia: Furina's hair is shortened to only the bob section. A single lock of hair, like a long ahoge, points towards the right of her hat. Her outfit is centered around dark blues and black.

History

Background

Furina de Fontaine was created when Focalors split her divinity from her own human body and spirit shortly after the Cataclysm 499 years ago. Focalors informed Furina that she needed to play the role of Hydro Archon and deceive the world into believing that she was Fontaine's god, as part of a plan to stop the prophecy of Fontaine, though she didn't divulge any further details. Focalors also cursed her with immortality so that she could continue to perform her duty even beyond the lifespan of an ordinary human. Later on, during the accession ceremony for the new Hydro Archon, Furina publicly took Focalors' place and quickly adapted to performing to her people's expectations for a god. For the next 499 years, Furina continued to perform her role without rest even as she gradually began to burn out, knowing that even a single mistake in her facade could lead to her identity being exposed and the prophecy dooming Fontaine.^[9]

Past

At some point prior to the Traveler's arrival in Fontaine, Furina would also spend her time being in the spotlight. After one performance, she went to the Vasari Passage to eat, coming upon an unnamed restaurant and deciding to eat there. She was enamored by the food and asked to see the head chef, which was run by Escoffier. When she came out to meet her guest, she was shocked to see the Archon dining and prepared a Lily Sugar-Glazed Opera Cake for her. Furina enjoyed the cake and decided to make Escoffier her Patissiere Supreme, which Escoffier accepted as she felt that it was a dream come true.^[10]

She was also assigned Clorinde as her personal bodyguard, who accompanied her almost everywhere she went and protected her on several occasions, which she greatly appreciated.^[11] She also witnessed Clorinde's duel against Navia's father, Callas, which she did not stop per Callas' wishes. Furina also got along well with Navia, enjoying her macarons and remarking that she was becoming more like her father as she grew.^[12]

Present

Furina learned of the Traveler and Paimon's plans to journey to Fontaine from one of her spies at Caravan Ribat. By the time the duo reached Romaritime Harbor and became acquainted with Lyney and Lynette, they were greeted by Furina and her entourage, surprising Paimon. Furina directly addressed the Traveler and Paimon, aware of the disruption they caused in other nations but nonetheless welcomed them as the nation's Archon. She then asked them if they had the qualities to communicate with her as the person from before bowed, having informed her of their arrival. The people believed that the Traveler had come to duel her, so the Traveler drew their sword. Clorinde prepared to intercept, but Furina had her stand down, commending on their bravery to stand against a god. As a normal duel would be too predictable, Furina instead declared that they would have a 'duel' in court, which surprised the Traveler and Paimon as they had only just arrived in the nation. Furina then pointed out that they had just broken a law by releasing a flying object on the first three days of a month - referring to Paimon, thus giving legal grounds to arrest them.^[13]

Lyney objected to the order on the grounds that Paimon was something else. Furina heared his claim, so Lyney snapped his fingers, revealing a red cord of energy tying the Traveler's hand to Paimon's back. He claimed that this made Paimon a balloon. Furthermore, the pair had arrived in the nation like this, making the charges unwarranted. Furina was entertained and dropped the charges. She then left, expecting a good performance from Lyney and Lynette later on.^[13]

Furina attended Lyney and Lynette's magic show in Opera Epiclese. During the preperations, Neuvillette told the Traveler that she was trying to get their attention, so they looked at her briefly, which he deemed enough to satisfy her. During a box switch trick at the conclusion of the show, a water tank dropped down from the ceiling, killing the person inside of the box. Furina then declared Lyney a suspect due to the circumstances involved. Neuvillette then asked Furina if she was going to press charges on Lyney, which surprised her. However, in order to please the audience, she ended up declaring a duel between her and the Traveler. Neuvillette then declared a trial the following day, assigning the Traveler as Lyney's attorney, while Furina wondered what the Traveler would do in the trial.^[14]

The next day, Neuvillette declared the trial to start while both parties gave their statements. When Lyney maintained his innocence, Furina pointed out that around the half-way mark, there was a loud thud and expressed doubt that he could not have heard it, which surprised him, while the scales tilted in her favor. She then exposed them as members from the House of the Hearth, with the Traveler and Paimon surprised with their friends' Fatui background. This resulted in the audience supporting Furina's claims while she noticed the Traveler being speechless, believing herself to have won. Neuvillette asked Lyney to confirm this, and he did, resulted in the scale dropping further towards Furina. The Traveler then requested a recess, which Neuvillette granted for an hour.^[15]

Furina managed to regain some of the audience's sway after the Traveler was unable to deduce the full truth, but the Traveler then realized that they need to go from another angle. They requested to inspect Cowell's belongings, believing he may have used the water from the tank to take another form. Furina found this absurd, as it was only a magic trick. However, Neuvillette agreed to the request so that the trial could progress. Esmond then came in and revealed that Cowell's bag had labeled tubes of water from the Primordial Sea and that he belonged to an organization selling illegal drugs.^[15]

With the new evidence supporting Lyney's innocence, Neuvillette allowed the Traveler to continue with their hypothesis, tilting the scales towards Lyney's favor. Furina, on the other hand, became worried about having wrongly accused someone, even agreeing slightly with their reasoning. Neuvillette then brought in Vaughn, having been informed of new evidence found; the same water was found in Lyney's belongings. Furina used the opportunity to cement her claim, knowing that the Traveler had nothing to defend against it. However, before the sentencing could start, Navia burst in with new evidence. She revealed the box from before and asked Lyney to repeat the trick. Lyney snapped his fingers and the missing woman from the audience reappeared. She confessed to the entire crime and revealed that she was actually Liliane, not Halsey. She was the thief that the Traveler and Lyney were chasing at the harbor. She stole a ticket and came to the show to relax. She became terrified when the random number generator picked her and Lyney mentioning the Fortress of Meropide, believing he was onto her.^[15]

Now relating the story in Liliane's perspective, the scales tipped towards Lyney's favor, leaving Furina shocked and unable to muster any words. She admitted defeat and Neuvillette put the information into the Oratrice, which returned a "Not Guilty" verdict to acquit Lyney and Lynette. Neuvillette then realized that Vaughn was Cowell's accomplice because he previously presented false evidence to frame Lyney. Furina yelled at him for deceiving her judgement and Neuvillette recommended he confess to everything and seek the protection of the Gardes. Vaughn began to confess to the entire plot, but before he could reveal the identity of the "Boss", he dissolved into water. Neuvillette ordered another inspection on the entire audience, though no evidence was yielded.^[15]

Furina was in attendence during Tartaglia's trial where he stood accused of being the murderer of the serial disappearances case. When Navia interuppted the proceedings to accuse Marcel of being the perpetrator, Furina asked for physical proof, which she did not have, though Navia stated that it would be coming soon. She also revealed that she had been the next target in the disappearing cases, which prompted Furina to ask why Callas did not want to defend himself. Navia explained that if Callas had done so, she and the rest of Spina di Rosula would have been targeted and many lives would have been lost. She then asked Clorinde to testify to Callas' state of mind in the arena, since she was the one who killed him.^[16]

Furina asked Clorinde if what Navia said was true, which she confirmed; as a Champion Duelist, she could tell when someone was fighting to live or die, and that Callas wanted to die. Furina found this as sufficient to open the case, but Neuvillette asked Navia to explain the link between her father and the disappearances. ^[16]

After the Oratrice wrongly accused Tartaglia of being guilty, despite the true culprit Vacher having already been caught, Neuvillette suggested asking Furina for an explanation as the supposed creator of the machine. When everyone stared at her, she became nervous and even showed signs of agitation before composing herself, claiming that the verdict was right and left to save face.^[16]

Following Tartaglia's disappearance in the Fortress of Meropide, Arlecchino decided to investigate Furina, eventually running into her by pure chance while she was trying to play with a cat, using the opportunity to attack and try to steal her Gnosis. She did not find the Gnosis on her, while Furina was left shocked and begged for mercy. Arlecchino felt a "curse" of some sort emanating from her, her genuine fear of death and eccentric behavior unfitting for an Archon, she left, realizing that she was not Focalors and that the Gnosis was being held somewhere else.^[17] The incident ended up traumatizing Furina, who did not tell anyone about the encounter and would try to keep it off her mind.^[18]

Later on, Neuvillette asked Furina about Arlecchino having requested a meeting with her, which he recommended to decline due to the recent events resulting in Tartaglia's apprehension and detainment in the Fortress of Meropide. However, Furina decided to entertain the Knave's request, under the reasoning that they needed to explain their actions and expressed confidence in Neuvillette's assistance, though Neuvillette pointed out that it could make the matters worse, aside from his lacking social skills; nonetheless, he agreed to help.^[19]

Furina accepted the request and had The Knave arrive, who thanked them for their service to the House of the Hearth in part due to making the children's lives better. However, she came specifically for Childe and requested his custody, though Neuvillette denied it since the trial had already concluded. She then suggested entering the Fortress of Meropide to check on his condition, though Neuvillette told her that the prison operates outside of the court's jurisdiction, so he instead offered a proposal to her.^[19]

During a second meeting between Furina and Arlecchino, the Traveler and Paimon arrive at the meeting, diplomatically defending Furina from the Knave's attempts to pressure her. During the meeting, Paimon noticed their cups shaking, making Arlecchino realize that they might be in the next stage of the prophecy. At this point, Arlecchino dropped the pleasantries and confronted Furina over the prophecy, accusing her of not protecting her people. Furina claimed to have a primary and backup plan, though when Arlecchino questioned her over it, claimed both to be confidential. Arlecchino then asked about the Oratrice Mecanique d'Analyse Cardinale, as she wondered what the large amount of Indemnitium was going to be used for. She then noted that Neuvillette was not present and that they change to less serious topics at hand before concluding the tea party, but asked the Traveler to see her off.^[17]

After the Traveler and Paimon finished serving their sentences in the Fortress of Meropide, Furina had an argument with Neuvillette over her knowledge about the prophecy. He asked her to stop dodging his questions, and then handed her a list of victims from the Poisson incident. Emphasizing that neither of them want it to happen again, he pushed her to yield information about the missing stone slate and the prophecy from Egeria. Furina stated that she and Egeria are two different people and thus she is not privy to her predecessor's secrets. She asserted that she had a plan in motion and ordered Neuvillette not to speak of the incident again as she darted from his office, failing to notice the Traveler at the door.^[20]

During a show, some people accused Furina of ignoring the "prophecy crisis". Then, others began joining in, causing her to flee while the Marechaussee Phantom dealt with the situation. However, after it was resolved, Furina was nowhere to be found.^[20]

In Poisson, the Traveler and Paimon found Furina lamenting the victims of the recent disaster. When approached, she pretended that she was fine before several people appeared and began to chase her. The three managed to evade their pressures before entering a house, where Furina began to unravel and admit that she had been investigating the prophecy, but to seemingly no avail. The Traveler managed to convince her to open up to them as a "witness", since they are a spectator, not from Teyvat. But, before she could say anything, the house quickly collapsed and revealed itself to be an elaborate opening act by Lyney on the stage of the opera house, to begin her trial. Furina found the idea of being tried absurd, but Neuvillette took this as a refusal. Since the other option was a duel with Clorinde, Furina refused the duel by raising both hands up, surprising the audience. Furina then clarifies that she was not completely surrendering, rather she was agreeing to the trial.^[21]

Furina was the prosecuted by the Traveler, who hoped to get the truth from her if they bested her in court. Before they started, Furina asked how much time was spent to force her on the stage and learned of the plan to trap her. Navia's subordinates lured her both at the opera and at Poisson, while the Fatui built a "Giant Magic Box" to replicate Lyney's original trick and tunneled all the way to the opera house, where Clorinde was ready to duel Furina should she refuse trial. Furina then assumed that the Traveler was only intending to prosecute her, but they tell her that they wanted to give her one last chance to admit everything while alone in the box. As the stage was already set, Furina stated that the only action left for her was to begin the trial.^[21]

The Traveler pressed the charge of Furina being a fraud, which surprised everyone due to the blatancy of the accusation. Despite this, they managed to convince the audience through supporting information compiled by Charlotte's interview, culminating with Navia providing a sample of Primordial Seawater for her to touch. Furina was initially hesitant to touch the water, but did so anyway to maintain her innocence. However, the conspirators had considered the small chance of this happening, and had heavily diluted it to a non-lethal level. Neuvillette then called Sigewinne in for a check-up, who revealed that she showed the same symptoms as other Fontainians exposed to impure Primordial Seawater. The audience was then fully convinced, and Nevuillette concluded the trial, deeming her guilty and leaving her in tears. Neuvillette then asked the Oratrice Mecanique d'Analyse Cardinale for the final verdict. It declared the Hydro Archon guilty, to be punished by the death sentence, even though the trial just proved that the defendant, Furina, was guilty of not being the Hydro Archon. Everyone was surprised and the verdict confused Neuvillette greatly.^[21]

After the Traveler and Neuvillette defeated the All-Devouring Narwhal, Fontaine began to flood with water, with Furina left alone crying on her throne, in accordance with the prophecy. However, the people were unaffected due to Focalors' deception and Neuvillette's absolution of primordial sin. The waters quickly receded, and a shocked Furina looked outside, seeing the people were unaffected.^[9]

Post-Archonhood Life

After some time passed, Furina legally abdicated from her role as Hydro Archon and left the related affairs to Neuvillette before packing up her belongings and leaving the opera house. Neuvillette promised to ensure that her needs will be taken care of,^[22] although Furina chose to live a less ostentatious life, moving into a rental apartment and subsisting on macaroni with various sauces. During this time, Furina felt lost as to what direction her life would take, having fulfilled her life's purpose for 500 years.^[23]

Some time afterwards, Furina was visited by the Traveler and Paimon outside her new home. Not having anyone to care for her anymore, Furina tells them how she spends most of her time at her new home cooking macaroni with various sauces. Learning of their commission to find a replacement actor for an opera troupe, she stated that she could not help, as she had no more interest in acting, especially after having to assume the role of Focalors for so long. The two then return to Lauwick with the bad news, though he is seen arguing with Dulphy, who insisted she was still able to perform. The Traveler then sensed Furina eavesdropping on their conversation and dragged her in, where she apologized to Paimon for her harsh words and had a change of heart after they left. Seeing that they appeared to have the situation resolved, Furina asksed if they had financial issues; the two explained that their director, Aurelie, was a victim of Marcel's plots, which shocked Furina. Furina eventually decided to help the troupe out, so they headed to their quarters.^[24]

There, they found two more troupe members, Elain and Buraud, who were surprised to see the Traveler and Furina. Lauwick stated that after the director's death, they struggled to finish her script, The Little Oceanid, as they were unsure as to how the story should go, and their main actors, Vilmant and Pauleau, had yet to respond; Vilmant had taken Aurelie's death hard, while Pauleau was busy writing the script's ending. Vilmant promised that he would arrive, though they were worried that he would keep his word. With Furina present, the troupe was confident that they could rebound. Pauleau had gone to Poisson, which Furina remarked as being where the disaster occurred.^[24]

Having made their way to Poisson, they talked to Pauleau about the script, though it wasn't ready yet. Navia then arrived, prompting Dulphy to push Lauwick out of the way for being "oblivious". Furina asked Navia how the town was doing, who told her that they're getting through. However, some people were still angry at Furina for her inability to deal with the prophecy when it struck them, though she did attempt a lie by claiming that the 'Furina' that came in was just an actor dressed as her. Navia then left, so Furina took a short stroll to unwind, where she expressed worry about having come to Poisson, having anticipated resentment towards her. As a crowd began to gather and make noise, they headed to Spina di Rosula's ship for more unwinding.^[25]

Furina stated that she was still traumatized by the rising waters and people being dissolved, even though the worst-case scenario had been avoided. While she now had her freedom, she could not enjoy it as she had no idea how to experience it. The Traveler told her that she was making an improvement before they return to Pauleau, who had just finished his script while Lauwick and Dulphy were arguing again over the food. Pauleau came out and was surprised to see Furina and how she was an inspiration to the troupe; Dulphy had been abandoned by her parents, while Lauwick was a foster child and the son of a murderer. He offered out his version of the ending; Dulphy was slightly unconvinced, believing they should mirror their director, but Pauleau stated that it would be meaningless. Pauleau then revealed that he was madly in love with Aurelie, though she had rejected him as she saw everyone as brothers and sisters. Pauleau had decided to try again later, though her disappearance made it impossible. He also revealed that on the day of her disappearance, she had told them to wait outside the city walls, but she never came and was never seen again. They then try to look for Vilmant.^[25]

Making their way to Vilmant's last known location, the group comes across a group of Slimes, which the Traveler was forced to fight alone since Furina could not fight without a Vision. Once they removed the slimes, they headed to Vilmant's tent, where he was brought up to speed by the others. Pauleau revealed his secret to him, wondering if her death had impacted him too. Vilmant revealed that the troupe was financially struggling until one day when a merchant offered to sponsor them in return for drinks to be sold during their performances. Not thinking the matter through further, he had agreed without consulting anyone else, after which he discovered that the drink was actually Sinthe. He then informed Aurelie, who then declined the merchant's request, making them furious as he threatened to sue. He had wanted to resolve the problem himself, but she insisted she would do so until one day, she told them to leave the city, which he assumed was the boiling point. However, he did not reveal it to the other members, particularly after her death as he was scared, which enrages Pauleau. Furina then stopped the two, as they were using the show as an excuse to vent their own emotions. She then realized that Aurelie had wanted to create a shelter for them from the outside world, and thus they should devote the ending to her.^[26]

The troupe members returned to their quarters while Furina and the Traveler headed to Palais Mermonia to see if they could find any of Aurelie's belongings. As the Traveler had been an investigator on the case, Sedene went to look for the items and shortly returned with a diary and other belongings she had on her person. Going through the diary, they learned what she had encountered in her final moments and that she cared for the troupe members. They returned to the troupe, who read through the notes with mixed emotions. They all agreed to honor the director, but Dulphy suggested using Aurelie's name instead of her own, as she was just a replacement for the role. Lauwick agreed, and attempted to prepare their stage, but Furina declined, stating that they'll need a bigger one - the Opera Epiclese, which surprised the troupe, as they believed themselves unworthy of it. Furina convinced them otherwise, so she and the Traveler went off to find Neuvillette, who Furina predicted would be taking a break outside the Palais Mermonia.^[26]

Neuvillette learnd of the reason for their visit and agreed to allow the troupe to host their event there. He was glad to see Furina slowly rebounding back, asking her if she would perform again. Furina declined, stating that she still had no desire to return as the main focus and the experience was more than enough for her.^[26]

The troupe began their rehearsals under Furina's direction, with the Traveler and Paimon helping out, until the time eventually came for the performance at the Opera Epiclese. Pauleau and Vilmant finished their scene just before the finale, but Dulphy's illness returned and incapacitated her—Furina then volunteered to assume her role for the final scene, which she privately found ironic, as she had not wanted to perform. Before she was escorted back to the troupe's quarters to rest, Dulphy asked Furina what she thought made "Clio" shine so brightly. Furina stated that it is her pure heart, as she never gave up on believing in the beauty of the world, which pleased her. Furina completed Clio's performance successfully, during which she awakened her Vision at the conclusion of the show. As everyone takes the stage for the curtain call, admitted to herself that it felt good to act again, if just briefly. She was then completely caught off guard when Pauleau credited her, by name, as their consultant, especially since she had insisted on not being credited.^[26]

Backstage, Pauleau pointed out to the exasperated consultant that everyone's work was traditionally acknowledged regardless of their role, which she acknowledged, but stated that they should have told her first. Paimon then talks about her Vision, as Paimon was supposed to lower a prop from the ceiling for the scene, but instead, a real one had appeared for her. Furina was also left surprised at receiving a Vision, which she had already equipped on her in place of the large gem on her waist. Pauleau then wondered about Dulphy, so they went out to look for her at the troupe quarters. Dulphy was delighted to hear that the performance was a success, while Vilmant left to give them space. Furina was still annoyed at the special thanks that Pauleau had given her, though she admitted that the experience had made her decide that she'll return to the stage with new perceptions, particularly with her newly acquired Vision.^[26] After acquiring her Vision, Furina created three companions to accompany her; Gentilhomme Usher, Surintendante Chevalmarin and Mademoiselle Crabaletta. Later, she attempted to fight a Local Legend with them, only to fail miserably. Furina then began to study her Vision, only to accidentally flood her apartment and was scolded by the manager after cleaning up the mess.^[27]

When Xavier was struggling to find a director for his new film based on the Two Musketeers. The Traveler suggested bringing Furina onboard. Xavier was nervous, but with the help of some sweets and the Traveler showcasing their photography, Furina agreed to join as the film director. She was impressed with Ayaka's acting and offered her a position as actress, but she declined, stating her roles at home took higher priority. Furina found it disappointing but still told her it was open if she ever reconsidered. The film was a great success, and Xavier's crew was given the Furina Award for their efforts. Furina reluctantly held the trophy for the crew photo only at the insistence of the others, embarrassed by the self-awareness of hoisting a statuette modelled after herself.^[28]

With time to spare, Furina decided to visit Liyue with Neuvillette. Neuvillette had to return to resume his duties, while Furina remained behind, where she made her way to Qiaoying Village. There, she met with Zhongli and Hu Tao, where she quickly got along with them. She also sensed that Zhongli appeared to know more than he suggested, believing that he was feigning ignorance for her own benefit. Navia and Clorinde later caught up to them and she bid farewell to her new friends, returning to Fontaine with the souvenirs they had bought.^[29]

Furina was asked by Lepine-Pauline if she could use Chevalmarin's likeness to create the Chevalmarin Film Fantasyland, an amusement/film park in return for a royalty for using her companion. When Angoulvant was being chased by the Gardes and caused a ruckus, Escoffier quickly covered Furina's ears.

With the Traveler's guidance, the Chevalmarin Film Fantasyland was a huge success. As a reward for their efforts, Furina allowed them to doodle a mustache onto her portrait, which they could choose between a cream- or bolognese-colored one.^[30]

During the next Fontinalia Film Festival, Furina helped direct Xavier's film. While they did not win, Furina later attended the subsequent party on the Wingalet and had a tea party with Arlecchino, Columbina and Sandrone. The presence of numerous Harbingers initially intimidated her, while Arlecchino apologized to her for their previous tea party, which had been rather tense due to the situation at the time. Furina accepted the apology and promised to treat them in their next party. As they ate and drank, Furina asked Sandrone if the mechanical piano was hers, asking if it was hers. Sandrone confirmed as such before being pressured to play a piece, after which Furina took part in a photo shoot with her friends.^[31]

• Furina's singing voice in This Life, Just Like a Light Trickle of Song in Furina's Story Quest, Animula Choragi Chapter: Act I - "The Little Oceanid" was provided by Cécilia Cara for all four voiced languages.^{[32][33][34][35]}
• Furina wields the Splendor of Tranquil Waters in her portrait art and the Version 4.2 Trailer.
• Furina is the first character since Version 1.3 to receive a Character Introduction illustration whose base artwork is significantly different from that of her Wish Artwork.
• Furina is the first character to exhibit a number of mechanics enabled by her atypical Charged Attack, which are as follows:
  • She can switch between the two Arkhe alignments.
  • She can change her outfit as seen in menus without using the Dressing Room.
  • Her Charged Attack is not preceded by a Normal Attack, a trait that is otherwise not found among most characters who use swords, polearms, or stances that share the features of sword and polearm attacks.
• Furina is one of only two characters who can cause the surface of any unfrozen body of water to be treated as if it were land for all of her own normal character actions, such as executing Plunging Attacks and taking fall damage. She does this through her Elemental Skill, Salon Solitaire. This mechanic was first introduced with Sangonomiya Kokomi's Elemental Burst.
  • Furina is the first to be able to treat unfrozen water as land for an infinite uninterrupted amount of time.
• When Furina leaps out of water, the trail of water behind her sparkles.
• Furina is one of a few characters that the player witnesses obtain a Vision/Moon Wheel/Stellar Linchpin onscreen. She is the third character overall and the second playable character to do so. Before her, Rana and the Wanderer received theirs. After her, Ineffa received hers.
  • Her Vision has a unique design, which contains elements of both the Pneuma and Ousia vision cases. The Vision case also features four claw-like prongs that hold the Vision's gem in place. However, the UI icon of her Vision in character menus will appear as a normal Pneuma or Ousia Vision depending on her current alignment.
• Furina is one of the few currently playable characters who acknowledges or even seems aware that the Traveler is from another world.^[36]
• Furina's Constellation has her self-portrait, similar to the Traveler, the Wanderer, and the playable Archons.
• Before completing Furina's Story Quest, Animula Choragi Chapter: Act I - "The Little Oceanid", her Profile section lists the source of her Hydro powers as "???". After completing it, the power source is revealed to be "Vision."

Etymology

• Furina may be named after two gods from ancient Roman mythology: Furrina and Fontus.
  • Furrina, also spelled Furina, is the Roman goddess of springs.
    • Her predecessor, Egeria, is also named after a Roman goddess.
  • Fontus, also spelled Fons, is the Roman god of wells and springs.
    • A religious festival called Fontinalia is held in his honor on October 13th, which is also the date of Furina's birthday.
    • Fons means "source" or "root" in Latin. It is also the origin of the word "spring" in many European languages, such as Fontana in Italian, Fountain in English and Fontaine in French.
• Furina's Chinese name, 芙宁娜 Fúníngnà is probably derived from 宁芙 Níngfú, "Nymph", the water sprite in Greek mythology. And the term 水仙 "narcissus" is translated as "Nymph" in English in game.
• Furina's surname, de Fontaine, features the French nobiliary particle de to denote her noble origins.
