Lyrics

Chinese and English

Chinese Transcript Pinyin English Translation
Wǒ xī zhū bān è yè, jiē yóu wú shǐ All my karmas of auld arise from the time without beginning.
Shí fāng chén chà jí wēi, wǒ jiē shēn rù The infinitesimal dust motes[note 1] in ten directions, I shall deeply delve into all of them.
Yǐ ruò lì míng zhèng yīn, yún hé děng zhì If one establishes names as the right cause, how can he reach meditative absorption (samāpatti)?
Xiǎng quán wú tóng chī àn, zuò rú shì niàn To be completely without thought is like an ignorant darkness, making such reflections.
Fēi xiǎng fēi fēi xiǎng jiān, rú bìng rú jiàn In the realm of perception and non-perception, it is like a disease, perhaps an arrow.
Wǒ xìn bǐ jiàng xià yuān, xìn bǐ shēng tiān I believe he hath descended to the abyss. I believe he hath ascended to the heavens.
Kōng wèi kōng jí fēi wǒ, wú xiàng wú yuàn Emptiness means voidness and non-self, formlessness and wishlessness.
Hòu yuán wú xiàng dìng chù, wú lòu bù rán Hereafter asserting the state of formless absorption, the undefiled cannot come to be.
Zhū è yè, tān chēn chī shǐ All evil karmas begin from greed (lobha), anger (dosa), and ignorance (moha).[note 2]

Notes

  1. This is the combination of two concepts: the "Dust-Mote Universe" — a worldview in Avatamsaka Sutra stating that the whole world is contained in a dust-mote arose from the deep meditative consciousness of Buddhist ascetics, and the "Paramanu" — a Buddhism concept of the indivisible unit of matter, comparable to an atom. It is crucial for analyzing the composition of physical existence and the nature of reality.
  2. In Buddhism terms, these are called the "three poisons" or the "three unwholesome roots" (Pali: akusala-mūla), which are the negative state that leads to all negative states and are the cause of suffering and rebirth.
