Sarah Floren is an NPC and a major antagonist of Season 1 and Season 2.

Profile

Sarah was a key Exaltist leader who infiltrated Vision Corporation to manipulate it from within, as part of her major role in the greater conspiracy of making humanity enter the Age of Hollows. She was a fervent believer of the Creator and strived to manifest Them into the world so They could bring "true peace, an unbreakable, ever-standing order,"[5] and deeming the destruction and casualties she left behind her along her path as "necessary sacrifices."[6] Following Mevorakh's death, she was chosen by the Creator as the new Overseer, and she received Their instruction for the first time.

History

Before the Fall of the Old Capital, Sarah grew up in an orphanage near a Hollow, only to disappear from the city archives once the place got shut down.[7] During that period, she became a member of the Special Investigation Squad of H.A.N.D.'s Hollow Special Operations (HSO). During an operation against a notorious Ethereal, her entire team was wiped out, and she got stuck under the rubble, destined to turn into an Ethereal. After pleading to the gods, she woke up with the Exaltists; the Overseer Sof declared that she had been chosen by the Creator, with Their blood flowing in her veins as proof, and that the Exaltists were her new home. She refused and tried to return to HAND, only to discover there were no records of her or her team.[8][Note 1] After a couple of months spent trying to convince HAND of her and her team's existence, she disappeared again, joining the Exaltists' cause.[7]

Sarah's fervent faith and desire to meet the Creator in person, combined with her cunning disposition,[9] allowed her to climb the Exaltists' ranks, becoming a key leader,[10] second only to the Overseer.[Note 2]

In order to carry out the plan of developing an effective Sacrifice serum,[11] she orchestrated several Exaltist operations together with Justin Bringer, including the infiltration of Vision Corporation to retrieve the Sacrifice sample from inside the Hollow, the manipulation of Charles Perlman,[12] the Null_Face attack against Section 6 during the VR test, and the hacking of the Hoshimi family by White Noise.[13] After luring Miyabi into their trap, she personally extracted the power necessary for Bringer's refinement from Tailless,[14] and later shot Bringer with the final dose of Elixir P-07 to complete his transformation.[15] She then relocated to Waifei Peninsula, where the Exaltist stronghold was, to aid Overseer Mevorakh in her plan. She and the Overseer had struck a deal: when Mevorakh's revenge plan came to fruition, she would open the path to the Creator for Sarah.[10]

When the Exaltists got news of the Phaethon siblings moving to Waifei Peninsula under Yixuan's tutelage, Sarah was the one who shot their airship down.[16] She picked up Dr. Lohr's call for help in the Overseer's stead, convincing him to self-sacrifice.[17] When the cultists turned to her after Mevorakh's apparent defeat against Yixuan, she calmed them down and welcomed the Overseer back from the Miasma coagulum.[18]

After both Lucro's and Lorenz's assassinations, Mevorakh kept her promise, opening the door to the Final Domain for the Creator to descend into their world.[19] While the Overseer was fighting against Orphie and Magus, Sarah had been tailed by Ye Shiyuan; while he was about to face her in a fight, Mevorakh died: the Creator granted the Overseer mark to Sarah, which shocked Shiyuan, stalling the fight.[1] Sarah tried to talk him into joining her cause, and promptly feigned using her new power of "Erasure" to free him from his nightmares.[20][21] At the same time, she also received the Creator's instruction for the first time: to bring Them the power of the Qingming Sword.[22]

Despite the Exaltists' organization crumbling after Mevorakh's death, Sarah managed to regroup enough cultists to carry on her plan of bringing the Creator into their world: by trapping Yidhari Murphy inside Lemnian Hollow and amplifying her ability with Miasma, Sarah managed to make her manifest the door to the Creator, which only existed in the past.[23] While Shiyuan helped locate the Miasma-absorbing array,[5] Ning Qian lured Banyue inside the array, using him as the key to activate it.[8] The final step was baiting Ye Shunguang to investigate inside Lemnian Hollow to search for her brother;[8] with this complete, Sarah was fully prepared to proceed with the ritual. However, Shiyuan's plan was to be close enough to Sarah while she was conducting the ritual in order to strike down the Creator before it could fully manifest:[24][21] he attacked the Creator, which caused Sarah to attempt to shield Them, and she was mortally wounded in the process; she managed to complete the ritual in her last moments, and the Creator granted her the possibility to merge with Them.[8] Her body thus became a vessel for a Messenger of the Creator.[25]
