Abyss Mage

Abyss Mages are an elite enemy group part of the Abyss Order. They are usually found with hilichurls and/or their fellow mages.

Abyss Mages can commonly be seen performing rituals or patrolling a set area. When performing a ritual, the mage will not have a shield up, but will quickly generate one if not killed in the first hit. Patrolling mages always have their shield active. Their shields are most effectively destroyed using the appropriate Elemental Reactions (see Shield/Shield Gauge Data). When their shields are destroyed, they will become stunned for a long time and can take direct damage. If the mage is not defeated while stunned, they will attempt to regenerate their shield.

Notable Abyss Mages

Cryochanter Abyss Mage Emery

A Cryo Abyss Mage that appears as the main antagonist during Troublesome Work. It gets electrocuted by Lisa after refusing to return The Pale Princess and the Six Pygmies, claiming that the book contains a hidden secret.

Hydrochanter Abyss Mage Landrich

A Hydro Abyss Mage that briefly appears during Darknight Hero's Alibi. Diluc interrogates it regarding the threatening note that the Knights received by lighting it on fire.

Mr. Fluffball

A Pyro Abyss Mage nicknamed by Klee that is the main antagonist during True Treasure. Having heard of Klee's reputation as the strongest in Mondstadt, it steals a bomb from one of her caches to use against Mondstadt. It accidentally kills itself when it mishandles the bomb it stole, causing great anguish to the young Knight.

• In For a Tomorrow Without Tears: the unnamed Cryo Abyss Mage which controls Dvalin and reports to the Traveler's Sibling.
• In The Outlander Who Caught the Wind: the unnamed Cryo Abyss Mage which is behind the ambush.
• In the Story Teaser "We Will Be Reunited": the unnamed Hydro Abyss Mage which reports to the Traveler's Sibling.
• In the Archon Quest Crash Course in Prologue: Act I - The Outlander Who Caught the Wind: the unnamed Hydro Abyss Mage behind the ambush who is defeated by Diluc.
• In Hidden Tears, a randomly named Pyrochanter Abyss Mage appears at the end of the story domain Hidden Teardrop in the Heart of the Jungle.
• In Master's Day Off, a randomly named Pyrochanter Abyss Mage attempts to eliminate Jean while she is sick.

Trivia

• Hydro Abyss Mages are the only Mages within the four variants to not have their elemental emblem on their clothing. The color palette is also inverted somewhat; instead of donning a black mask, Hydro Mages don a white mask.
• Octavia has a particular dislike of Abyss Mages due to an incident where she mistook one for an animal, attempted to feed it, and was attacked by both a Cryo and Pyro Abyss Mage. When she arrived to the 712th planet on her trip through the Sea of Stars, she helped influence the creation of several Teyvat-themed attractions, where costumes based on Abyss Mages were made to act as antagonists.^[3]
