The Pool of Shadows is a phenomenon located in Langqiu on Mars that has replaced all the rivers and waterfalls in the area with shadows.[1]

Description

The Pool of Shadows was created a hundred years ago on the day of Oxia and Langqiu's separation,[2] when Litost, a member of the Seven Shus, absorbed all the fear he could contain within himself, establishing the Ten Faces of Misery and imprisoning the shadows, with his blood turning into pool water infused with shadows—also known as the Pool of Shadows.[3] Following Litost's death and the appearance of the Pool of Shadows, the Seven Posts of Transfixing Shadows (Seven Nails) were created to nail the entire Pool of Shadows above Langqiu, thus counteracting the Great Eruption and preventing the corruption of the Sea of Data.[4] Perception claims that Langqiu could be easily torn apart by the power amassed in the Pool of Shadows, which is strong enough to be regarded as a nail in the Bubble Universe.[5] Despite being full of shadows, the water of the Pool of Shadows is just like any other lake—when ignoring water quality.[6]

It is traditional in Langqiu for people to enter or link their bodies to the Pool of Shadows in order to immerse themselves in it during their final moments before they disappear without a trace.[7] By jumping into the Pool of Shadows when alive, one would find themselves entangled with the Ten Faces of Misery, a fate supposedly worse than death.[8] In other words, the Pool of Shadows could be likened to Langqiu's "graveyard" or "underworld," with shadows themselves acting as monsters and demons.[9]

Duonigue, Litost's former pet, has a special connection with the Pool of Shadows[10] due to being a creation of shadow,[5] where it can use the Pool of Shadows as a source of power. However, Duonigue had yet to wield the Pool of Shadows' full power.[11] In Part 2 Chapter I, Duonigue plans to use the Pool of Shadows to move the entirety of Langqiu—to make it switch places with Oxia.[12] To attempt this, Duonigue focused on slowly merging with the Pool of Shadows and taking out the Seven Nails that constrained it.[13] However, while trying to squander the Pool of Shadows' power, Perception cut off Duonigue and the Pool of Shadow's connection.[14] Subsequently, Songque managed to gain control over the Pool of Shadows during Part 2 EX Chapter.[15]

After the events of Part 2 Chapter IX, Leylah dies when Coralie 6626 Planck and Erdős Helia defeat her, falling into Langqiu's waters and forming the Pool of Shadows in the last samsara of Sector Two.[16]
