Krateros

Krateros is an NPC on Amphoreus, located in "Lightless Chapel" Dawncloud and Beyond Time: An Eternal Page. Additionally, he can be found within Fragments of Recollections inside "Bloodbathed Battlefront" Castrum Kremnos and "Strife Ruins" Castrum Kremnos.

Profile

Krateros is the leader of the Godshield Brigade elite and a champion of the Kremnos Festival. He survived the fall of his homeland, Castrum Kremnos, and moved to Okhema.

History

In his youth, Krateros grew up in an unnamed tribe under the mentorship of Gorgo, prior to their arrival in Castrum Kremnos. She taught him how to hunt, and the skills he learned would eventually earn him his title of King's Aegis in the Kremnos Festival after surviving thirty rounds against King Eurypon, and demonstrating the five great virtues of Kremnos.^[1][2]

At some point, Hyacine's grandmother, Jacyntha, arrived at Castrum Kremnos and participated in the Kremnos Festival in order to secure a peace treaty for the Skyfolk. Unfortunately, she was defeated by the champion warrior at the time, which was Krateros. Though the battle was described as "glorious," Jacyntha ultimately died from injuries sustained during the fight.^[3]

Several months before Mydei was born, Queen Gorgo granted Krateros the title of King's mentor, and Krateros vowed to teach Mydei martial arts and protect him and the throne with his life once the Prince became king. After Mydei was born, Eurypon betrayed his family, killing Gorgo and throwing Mydei into the River of Souls, for which Krateros regrets having done nothing to protect them. Years later, he would hear word of a Detachment with a leader who defied death roaming outside of Kremnos, and he believed Mydei had returned. He went on to serve alongside Mydei after he had killed Eurypon, and the Detachment traveled to Okhema, where they would serve as mercenaries for Aglaea.^[1][2]

After Phainon failed his Coreflame trial, Mydei decided to pay a visit to him. The two were tailed by scouts from Okhema's Council of Elders, though they quickly dispatched of them. Mydei had initially wanted to talk to him about the future of their people, but Krateros believed that he was tarnishing their city-state's legacy and refused to hear more of it.^[4]

Believing that Mydei refused to help his people, Krateros proceeded to abduct Trinnon and forced her to give him an entry to the Vortex of Genesis so he could take on Strife's trial, but naturally failed it. Aglaea and Mydei confronted him, and he explained that he refused to idle around and that someone would take his place if Mydei refused. Aglaea proceeded to declare a punishment, but Tribbie stopped her, instead telling him that they would bring him to the "Abyss of Fate" Janusopolis to view a memory from the past, which he agreed to.^[5]

Shortly after Trianne had been turned into a doll after using her powers to transport Trinnon and Tribbie to safety from the Flame Reaver, Krateros arrived and challenged them despite the Flame Reaver losing interest in her. He subsequently fought the Flame Reaver; he was no match for their skill, and in order to protect Trinnon, he leaped from a great height. By the time Trinnon returned with Hyacine, they found Krateros at the bottom of the valley outside the temple, having sustained numerous cuts during his fight against the Flame Reaver.^[6]

Krateros survived his injuries and was nursed back to health, after which Mydei visited him. Krateros believed that Mydei had finally accepted his responsibilities as king, but to his surprise and shock, Mydei instead renounced his royalty after assuming Strife's divinity. After decreeing the end of the royal dynasty, Mydei gave him Gorgo's signet ring, which Chartonus had fished up by chance from the Sea of Souls. He told him to inform the other Kremnoans of his words, as only a human could guide a path for other humans. Krateros lamented his inability to save "that child," but Mydei told him that it was irrelevant. Krateros then realized that Mydei had negotiated with Aglaea to free him, which she did as he promised to pledge his all to the Flame-Chase Journey.^[7]

Krateros later met with Hyacine and Tribbie when the former was looking for a place to set up a new Twilight Courtyard. After learning from Cassondra that Aglaea was in danger, he tried to communicate with Dan Heng and the Trailblazer, only to get no response. He rushed to Dan Heng with a few men, warning the Cleaners that had confronted him to back off, stating that their actions caused Aglaea's death. Upon returning to Okhema with him, they met with the Trailblazer and Phainon. Krateros remained behind to restore and rally order. After reading Aglaea's message, Phainon asked Dan Heng to inform Krateros and the city guards to inform the populace to head to Marmoreal Palace for an assembly.^[8]

With several guards, Krateros manages to set up a defensive position in a temple at "Lightless Chapel" Dawncloud, protecting people from the black tide. The collapse of the World Wound Web following Aglaea's death resulted in intelligence barely traveling across the city, causing plenty of chaos. He was also informed of Mydei's death, which shocked him. During the events of Adventure Mission Spear and Shield A-Clang in the chapter Amphoreus Annals, Glykon attempts to convince Krateros to let him out so he can save others, though Krateros refuses, not wanting him to needlessly sacrifice himself. He ultimately relents when the Trailblazer offers to accompany him, and the two manage to set up another safe zone just across from his temple. Impressed by their efforts, Krateros gives command of the newly established safe zone to Glykon.^[9]
