Dialogue

Speak with "Elder" Amunet

UI Trailblaze Mission Mission Description

You remember "Elder" Amunet as well as Aidonia, this city-state that worshiped Thanatos. This is where your memory begins.
Of course, you also remember how you became an executioner and a Maiden of War.
Castorice: I... I can't do it.
Castorice: Their voices... They pierce my ears... The pleading, the thanks...
"Elder" Amunet: Ahh. I know that feeling, child. I was once as lost as you are now.
"Elder" Amunet: But you must respect those walking towards death, just like how you should respect yourself as the Holy Maiden granting humans glory and liberation.
Castorice: What you're asking me to do is no better than the task of an executioner, and yet you want me to respect myself?
Castorice: No matter the titles, I am still taking away human lives...
"Elder" Amunet: This won't be the first time that Aidonia's fanatical netherwarriors have faced death. On the contrary, recruits new to the battlefield often run away from their first fight.
"Elder" Amunet: Death is the mightiest and gravest power in this world. The fact that you can wield it means you are deserving of respect.
Castorice: That's such a... twisted reason...
"Elder" Amunet: ...Then, let me tell you a story.
"Elder" Amunet: In Aidonia, the greatswords commonly used by executioners are called "Drakonian" in memory of Drakon, an elderly executioner.
"Elder" Amunet: The sword has three air holes along its body. If the sword is swung down swiftly and accurately, the holes would make no sound, and the executed would also depart this world quickly and painlessly...
"Elder" Amunet: But should the executioner have any hesitation, the holes will produce a piercing whistle. On that cue, the screams of the executed are sure to follow.
"Elder" Amunet: Every executioner after Drakon is to hone their sword skills every day in preparation of future executions. Every swing of their blade must be more resolute than the last, for failing to do so will bring pain.
"Elder" Amunet: Pain for the dying... as well as pain for themselves.
Castorice: ...No. I can never get used to this.
"Elder" Amunet: You misunderstand, child. I am not telling you to get used to it.
"Elder" Amunet: I'm asking you to consider the source of the dead's suffering, and use that knowledge to fortify your future touches with more and more determination.
"Elder" Amunet: Go walk with the dead, and love them as you love life... Then you'll no longer hear those noises.

Execute the unknown death-row prisoner

Unknown Death-Row Prisoner: Please... Don't kill me... I don't want to die....
Icon Dialogue Arrow A gentle touch.
Icon Dialogue Arrow No. I can't do it.
"Elder" Amunet: This is your duty. Remember, consider the source of the dead's suffering, then give them the respect they deserve.
Unknown Death-Row Prisoner: Th—Thank you... I beg you... Don't listen to her...
Icon Dialogue Arrow A gentle touch.
Icon Dialogue Arrow I—I can't...
"Elder" Amunet: If you cannot learn to accept death, then Aidonia has no place for you.
"Elder" Amunet: This is your last chance. Do it.
Unknown Death-Row Prisoner: No, please... I don't want to die... Please, I'm begging you...
Icon Dialogue Arrow A gentle touch.
Unknown Death-Row Prisoner: No... No...
(Screen fades to black)
You gently touch the prisoner's forehead with your finger. His face is pale, his eyes flicker with fear, and his body trembles uncontrollably.
Is it because of fear, anger, and hatred, or is your so-called merciful Touch of Death simply a lie?
The dark purple mottles spread like petals across the death row inmate's face, then seemed to be submerged by springwater, flooding his body. His trembling ceased, and the cries that had once begged for mercy slowly turned into a sigh-like whimper, as he murmurs to himself.
Quickly, everything falls into a dead silence, turning into pitch-black dew that scatters with the wind. You hear your own heartbeat drown out the sound of heavy breathing.
"Elder" Amunet: May you gain some insights through his sacrifice.
Castorice: ...
Castorice: Is... this all?
"Elder" Amunet: No. Come with me.
"Elder" Amunet: This is just the beginning of your life as the Maiden of War.

Speak with "Elder" Amunet and learn about the duties of an executioner

UI Trailblaze Mission Step Description

You remember "Elder" Amunet as well as Aidonia, the city-state that worshiped Thanatos. This is where your memory begins.
The "Elder" does not wish that you become a merciless executioner, but that you would fully understand the weight of life and death, then carry out with utmost respect the duty with which you were born.
Castorice: When will this ever end...?

(Approach Amunet)
"Elder" Amunet: Come. Fulfill your duty.
Castorice: ...What?

(Talk to Amunet)
Castorice: ...What are you trying to do with me?
"Elder" Amunet: I have aged... The time has come for me to heed the summons of ThanatosDeath Titan and journey to their domain.
"Elder" Amunet: ...The final resting place of every Aidonian.
Castorice: You're not that old yet... You still have many, many years ahead of you...
"Elder" Amunet: No no... I'm already "dead."
"Elder" Amunet: For I have come to fear... my declining health and impending death.
"Elder" Amunet: Castorice, will you give me one last chance to charge towards fear and prove that I am no coward?
Castorice: I...
Castorice: I... I can't take this anymore...
"Elder" Amunet: Child, it was I who brought you here from the frosty plains and set your farcical fate in motion. It was also I, chief executioner of Aidonia, who forced the heavy duty of executing others onto you.
"Elder" Amunet: I've always known... that you have doubts and even anger about myAidonian faith... and about me...
Castorice: I... never had a choice...
"Elder" Amunet: Indeed. We essentially abducted you.
"Elder" Amunet: Yet you can end any sinful life with just a touch of your fingers... Shouldn't it be easy for you escape from here?
Castorice: ...I'll never do that.
Castorice: It doesn't matter how lightly the Aidonians take death, or how readily they accept it... I simply can't do it.
"Elder" Amunet: Haha... I knew I was right about you.
Castorice: Wh—What do you mean?
"Elder" Amunet: I've taught you and cared for you as my own daughter all this time... because of this blessingcurse that's been with you since your birth. I know no one else in the world would understand the weight of life and death more than you do.
"Elder" Amunet: In the eyes of an Aidonian, "Death" is the end of all life, a destination we will all eventually reach. Humans should not resist it, but learn how to face it.
"Elder" Amunet: You can only live your life to the fullest after understanding this principle.
"Elder" Amunet: And when you do, even if you eventually leave Aidonia's protection... even if you must carry the curseblessing forever... you can live with your head held high, like everyone else.
Castorice: No, how can I—
"Elder" Amunet: Come now. It's time. I have already taught you all that I know...
"Elder" Amunet: Show me that you are a fitting Holy Maiden... or at least, that you possess the resolve to become one.

Defeat Furiae Praetor

UI Trailblaze Mission Step Description

You remember "Elder" Amunet as well as Aidonia, this city-state that worshiped Thanatos. This is where your memory begins.
Actively use your natural-born talent and learn to accept it.
"Prove that you're a capable Holy Maiden, or that you have such resolve."
"Elder" Amunet: Come now. It's time. I have already taught you all that I know...
"Elder" Amunet: Show me that you are a fitting Holy Maiden... or at least, that you possess the resolve to become one.
(Begin battle against Furiae Praetor Titankin)

(After the battle)
Castorice: ...
Castorice: This was the last time I followed her command. I gently touched the elderly woman before me.
Castorice: The executioner who had seen too much death died the same way as everyone else... A gasp for air, a wistful look in her eyes, and a barely perceptible tremor in her fingertips.
Castorice: Elder Amunet, the person who tried to teach me about "Death," ultimately vanished like dew in the morning mist. She spent her life embodying the beliefs of the Aidonians, and when death finally came, she embraced it exactly as their doctrine had taught...
Castorice: I have nothing but respect for her.
Castorice: I erected a cenotaph in her honor in the marshes outside Aidonia's city walls with the others I had laid to rest. Then, I set out once more in search of ThanatosDeath Titan.
Castorice: It was a long, long journey... I heard so many discussions about death along the way. "Life finds meaning in death." "The world improves because there is an end"...
Castorice: It seems the most terrible darkness in this world. Everyone talks about its heavy weight. Some resist it, some worship it, and some even revere it...
Castorice: How did a disappeared Titan become the deepest fear of humankind...
Castorice: ...And why do they haunt my dreams?
Castorice: I continued my travels to seek an answer. Initially, I was running away. Then, I started searching for it. And now, at the end...
Castorice: I just want to know if my touch... if my embrace... can do more than taking things away...
Castorice: Can I make anything...? Can I leave anything behind?

(Cutscene begins)
Inmate: I don't want to die!
Inmate: Please, I'm begging you.
Inmate: Just let me go!
Inmate: I don't want to die, please.
Inmate: I don't want mercy like this!
Inmate: Just... let me go... I need them...I don't...
Castorice: I hate these icy hands.

"Elder" Amunet: Get it over with.
"Elder" Amunet: End its suffering.
"Elder" Amunet: The Reaper has blessed your hands.
"Elder" Amunet: Only you can grant them peace.
"Elder" Amunet: Embrace death.
"Elder" Amunet: Walk alongside it.

Old Woman: Is that you... Castorice?
Old Woman: All of them... have gone.
Old Woman: heeding Death's summon.
Old Woman: crossing into their domain.
Old Woman: I...
Old Woman: must go too.
Old Woman: I don't fear it,
Old Woman: just... I have some regrets.
Old Woman: Watching people leave this world again and again...
Old Woman: it must be
Old Woman: lonely for you.
Old Woman: You must want to desperately embrace them
Old Woman: before they go.
Castorice: I can't...
Castorice: these hands...
Castorice: they're too cold...
Old Woman: But big sister Castorice...
Old Woman: your hands are so warm.
Old Woman: Just like anyone else's.
Old Woman: So go on, don't hold back,
Old Woman: give me a warm hug.

Castorice: Can hands like these...
Castorice: really be warm?
(Cutscene ends)

Castorice: On the day that Oronyx'sTime Titan Trial ended, you must have had many questions, (Trailblazer).
Castorice: I felt just as confused. Why, as someone from beyond the sky, were you so cruelly dragged into Amphoreus's fate?
Castorice: ...I wished I could take action, but no matter how hard I try, I cannot simply interact with the living as ordinary people do.
Castorice: Even when we brushed against each other unintentionally in the Grove... and it was obvious that nothing had happened...

Castorice: When an almost unattainable hope finally welled up in my heart...
Castorice: When I thought that perhaps my touch would no longer bring sorrow...
Castorice: Fate declared to me: It wasn't that the curse of "Death" had finally been lifted...
Castorice: ...but that your soul no longer belonged to this world... and there was nothing left for my hands to take. Nothing.
Castorice: And did I really think this time would be any different? It's not that I don't understand this reality — just that I'm unwilling to accept it.
Castorice: Having walked such a long road, I am still unable to find the answer to life and death. I am resigned to eternal despair...
Castorice: Anything I wish to hold on to, "Death" will inevitably wrest from my grasp...
Castorice: And from that moment on, I lacked the courage to confirm it again... Until OronyxTime Titan laid bare the cruel truth before us.
