Nihilita

Nihilita, also known as the Watcher of Nothingness and The Open-Eyed, is a quest-exclusive NPC that appears in the World Quest The Wind Has Ceased in Series A Long Day in the Mountains: Prologue - Magic Mountain. He^[2] is a Watcher of the Temple of Space and was created by Asmoday for the purpose of maintaining the status-quo in the temple, but has since abandoned his duties, left the Temple, and went out into the world.

Profile

Nihilita was created by Asmoday alongside Melanta as Watchers of the Temple of Space. She named them after the two things she could least deal with: "nothingness" and "melancholy."^[3]

Tasked with maintaining order, uplifting select individuals via the Apathic Interval,^[4] and silently observing Teyvat, they upheld Asmoday’s decree that the temple exist for preservation, with all innovation forbidden.^[2][5]

Appearance

Nihilita appears as a semi-humanoid and angelic being, with wings covering many parts of their body and their limbs being made out of cubes similar to that of their creator, Asmoday. Star motifs can also be seen across their form. They wield an orange and red angelic spear, and are incredibly similar to Melanta, with the exception of a color palette swap: their wings are white whereas Melanta's are black.

Story

Past

Eventually, Asmoday disappeared from the Temple of Space. After her departure, Nihilita opened his eye^[1] after countless aeons of nescience and beheld the truths of the world.^[6] In doing so, he defied Asmoday's will, left the temple, and abandoned his duties as a Watcher. Melanta, however, remained in the Cage of Suchness, steadfast in upholding his master’s rules and condemning Nihilita as a traitor.^[2]

Seeking to free the Temple of Space from Melanta's tyranny, Nihilita would wait in a secluded spot in Windrest Peak looking for the right person to fulfill the task.^[6] When Raumhilda was staying at the Old Sanatorium Site, she went for a walk at midnight and encountered Nihilita. He entrusted her with the juvenile Watcher Dex and asked her to free the Temple of Space from Melanta's control.^[5]

Present

During the World Quest The Wind Has Ceased in Series A Long Day in the Mountains: Prologue - Magic Mountain, the Traveler and Paimon meet Zeitlind, Raumhilda's younger sister and later Nihilita, too. He recognizes the Traveler as he knows about their confrontation with Asmoday at the beginning of their journey. As he did with Raumhilda, Nihilita entrusts the Traveler with Dex and sends them to the Temple of Space.

Etymology

• Nihilita likely comes from the Latin word nihilitas, meaning "nothingness, nonexistence." The word is also the etymology of the English word "nihility."
